Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'NATHAN C. LEWIS, JR., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ED\VIN BRUCE, OF SAME PLACE.
CONSTRUCTION OF IDIEIN'IISTSV CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,702, dated October 4, 1859.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN O. Lewis, J r., of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Operating-Chair for the use of Dentists; and I do hereby declare that the saine is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, is a top view, Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a front elevation, and Fig. 4t, a transverse section of such chair.
The process of filling teeth or performing other dental operations is often attended with much fatigue or injury to the operator in consequence of the constrained positions he is generally obliged to assume and maintain from time to time without any means of supporting either the body or his operating arm. My invention therefore, is intended to provide in connection with a chair for the reception of the patient a means not only of sustaining the body but the elbow of the operator.
In the drawings, A, represents an arm chair of the kind usually employed by den tists, one of the arms L, c', of the said chair is to be provided with a socket, a, extending down through it and for thereception of a swivel, B, to which a cushioned bar or arm rest, C, is hinged so as to be capable of being turned upward and downward. The said arm rest (or elbow rest as it may be termed) when in use extends toward and is supported upon the opposite arm c', of the chair and is furcated or provided with a re cess, l), for the reception of an arm, c, so applied to the said elbow rest as to be capable of being turned horizontally on a pivot, cl, and arranged at either a right angle or an acute angle with reference to the front side of the said elbow or arm rest. This arm, c, has an adjustable cushioned body rest, e,
hinged to its outer end, the same being provided with a toothed sector, f, and a spring latch, g, by which its angular position may be adjusted relatively to the upper surface of the arm as circumstances may require. Fig. 5, is a top view of the said arm, o, and the spring latch applied thereto.
After a patient has been seated in the chair, the body rest may be adjusted at such an angle and in such a position horizontally as may be most convenient for the operator' to support his body while leaning it against the said body rest. Furthermore, the elbow rest may be moved more or less horizontally so as to be arranged in a convenient position for the operator to support the elbow of his operating arm while he may be engaged in the performance of a dental operation. By means of such appliances the patient also will be protected from inconvenient pressure of the dentist, which he is oftentimes oblfiged to produce in order to support himsel Having thus described my invention what I claim therein and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is as follows:
l. I claim as my invention or improvement the combination of the adjustable body rest with the chair.
2. I also claim the combination of the auxiliary or elbow rest and the body rest applied to a chair.
8. I also claim the mode of applying the body rest to the elbow rest, that is, by means of an adjustable arm, c, applied and operating with respect to the elbow rest as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature.
NATHAN C. LEIVIS, JR. `Witnesses:
It. H. EDDY, F. I). HALE, Jr.
