Description

LIPSTICK AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 21, 1946 INVENTUR Patented July 11, 1950 UNIT/ED vsmres PATENT TO F Application The present invention relates to articles of the kind of lipstick cases and other'similar cases.
Its-chief object is to provide an article of this kind which can be manufactured more easily and at a lower cost than it was possible up to the present time.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, given merely by way of example and in which: 1 I
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an axial sectional view corresponding to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail view onan enlarged'scale corresponding to Figs. land 2. v
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated by the drawings the lipstick or other cosmetic 26 is mounted in a holder 33. This holder is slidable in a cylinder 49 the bottom of which is fixed to .a control disc or base 19 rotatable with respect to the lipstick case body I.
Holder 33 carries a finger (not visible on Fig. 1) engaged both into a longitudinal groove 24 of cylinder 49 and into a helical groove 5! formed in the inner wall of body i, so that rotation of easing l and base l9 with respect to each other causes holder 33 to slide axially in cylinder 49.
The cover 4 of body I is carried by a spindle l8 journalled in a support I! slidable vertically with respect to body I. This spindle 18 carries, fixed thereon, a pinion 53 in mesh with a rack 54 formed in body I, so that, in the course of its downward movement, pinion 53 is rotated, thus causing cover 4, with which it is rigid (as being for instance moulded together therewith), to pivot. I
In order to produce the downward movement of support piece I1, I make use, for instance, of an oblique projection 55 rigid with said piece and adapted to cooperate with an oblique groove 56 provided in cylinder 49.
Rotation of this cylinder 49, by means of disc l9, therefore permits of sliding piece I! upwardly or downwardly, and locking can be obtained by means of transverse surfaces 51 and 58 provided at the ends of groove 56.
This device works in the following manner:
Inclined projection 55, which is for instance rigid with a, piece 59 the shape of which corresponds to the external shape of cylinder 49 and which is connected to support I1 through a slot such as 69, is initially in the position shown by Fig. 3 in dotted lines (the dotted lines correspond located on the outside December 21, 1946, Serial No. 717,643 In France March 11 1946 a 3 Claims. (01. 206 -56) of cylinder 49 while the solid lines correspond to the inner surface of body I and groove 5|). I
When cylinder 49 is rotated in the direction of arrow f, the cover remains in its locked position as long as inclined projection 'has not moved across transverse surface 51 (Fig. 3).
Then, upon further rotation :of said cylinder 49, projection 55 engages grooves 56 and moves therein, thus causing piece 59 to move downwardly, and cover 4 to open. This movement is finished when the upper edge of piece 59 comes to the level of circulartransverse edge 58.
At this time, the cover is open and locked by said edge 58. I I
If cylinder 49 is furtherrotated in the direction of arrow f, extraction of the lipstick'takes place,this movement having already started during the opening of the cover.
When the case is to be shut off, the same operations take place in the reverse order, the reinsertion of projection 55 int groove 56 being ensured through the action of a helical projection 691 in line with one of the edges of groove 56.
With this construction, locking of the elements is ensured both for the opened and the closed positions.
With the arrangements according to my invention, operation of the lipstick case is particularly easy, the opening of the cover and extraction of the lipstick being performed by a single movement of the hand, and possibly of a single hand.
False moves are impossible.
Furthermore, the cover is locked in the positions corresponding to the ends of its movements in either direction.
In a general manner, while I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be practical and efficient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehended within the scope of the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
l. A lipstick case which comprises, in combination, a tubular body, a lipstick support movto this projection and to all elements and grooves able longitudinally in said body, lipstick extraction and retraction control means for moving said support in said body, a cover at the upper end of said body, a support for said cover slidable on said body in the longitudinal direction thereof, said cover being pivotally mounted on said support about an axis at right angles to said longitudinal direction, means, operatively connected with said control means, for imparting longitudinal displacements to said support, a pinion rigid with said cover, a rack carried by said body having its teeth in mesh with those of said pinion, locking means for limiting the longitudinal displacements of said support under the action of said control means to two extreme positions.
2. A lipstickcase which comprises, in combination, a tubular body, a lipstick holder movable longitudinally in said body, lipstick extraction and retraction control means for moving vsaidtholder in said body, a cover at the upper end of said body, a support for said cover slida-ble'=--longitudinally on said body, said -cov,erwbeing pivotally mounted on said support about axis at right angles to the longitudinal direction of said.
