This invention relates to novel andA useful iin- -provements in hair curlers and particularly those which might. be classified as non-thermal.
An object of this inventionv is to provide an improved hair combf characterized by means for curling hair.
Another object of this invention is to provide adjustabler teeth means, which 'are resiliently biased tothe. adjusted position.
Another object of this invention` is to provide means for adjusting' and regulating said resilient adjusting means. l
A furtherobject of this invention is to pro vide meansy for. manually adjusting the relative position of the teeth ofthe comb'.
A still further object of thisl invention is to provide an extremely; simple and eilicient hair curlingdevice which isboth eflicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Ancillary` objects and features of novelty shall become readily apparent. to those skilledv in the art,.in following the description of the preferred embodiment ofthe present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

This invention has been developed to provide a device, exclusive of external sources of power (electric, thermal, etc.), for the purpose of providing curl in persons hair. It is common knowledge that equal and opposite forces applied to a strand of hair, thence drawing said hair through or from between said forces, will cause said strand of hair to result in a curl. This invention is devised to operate on this principle of operation.
A housing IIJ, composed of any suitable material such as plastic, metal or the like, is provided with'a bore I2 therein. A portion of said housing is formedy to provide a handle while the remainder of the housing is provided with longitudinally and transversely aligned teethlA depending therefrom, two end'teeth being integral". ly' connected (Figures 2 and 5). There is provided in the handle portion of. said housing means for resiliently biasing said piston rod. The preferred form of resilient bias-'- ing means is a simplecoil springy 22, shown clearly in Figure l. It is seen that a collar or ilange 21! is provided about said.` piston rod.- and is adapted to abut a shoulder 26 in the said bore' I2. By this construction, a limitingl means lis provided for the said piston rod. The. other end of said spring 22 engages a conventional hex nutV or threaded collar 28` which is receivedin said bore. It is noted at this point that the endportion of the said bore I2, designatedv by the .numeral 30, is of complemental cross section to. the periphery of the hex nut. By this expedient, the said hex nut 28 is limitedin rotational movement and is permitted .substantially only' movement parallel to the axis of the said bore. Al screw 32 is received in the end portion ofthe said housing. l0' and the threads thereofv engaged the'conventional threads of the hex nut 28a. It is quite obvious that upon rotation of the. screw. 32, the hex nut may be selectively adjusted 1ongitudinally of the. bore 30. It is further apparent that by this expedient, the potential energy, stored in the resilient biasing means. 22' may be selectivelyadjusted. A collar 34`is yse-v cured to, or formed integral with the shank .of the said screw 32 and is rotatably receivedzina suitable complementary configured recess 36".- This recess retains the collar 34 and consequent,. ly the screw 32 in a selected, predeterminedposition permitting no axial movement of said screw. This construction permits rotation of the said' screw yet obviates any longitudinal movement axially thereof. A suitable hook orV hanging means 38 is supplied. at the thermal .portion ofv said screw for conveniently storing the invention when not in use.
In operation, a lug 4U, rigidly secured to thev piston rodl is urged in a selected positionto` adjust the relative position of the teethil and' 20 thereby permitting the` teeth of the comb. to be pulled through the hair without any notice able extra effort. After the comb. is partially pulled through said hair the lug' 40V isv released and permitted to beur-ged through the confines of theslot'Z, provided inthe housing I.0,there'-1 by causing strands of hair to be engaged between the outer rows of teeth I6 and the inner row of teeth 20. Thence the comb is pulled farther through the hair, thus curling the same as described hereinabove. It is noted from an inspection of Figure 1 that a second slot 44 is provided in the piston rod I8 and a second lug 46 extends therethrough. It is quite apparent from an inspectionv of this figure, that this slot and lug construction provide limiting means and guide means for said piston rod relative to the housing Il). The preferential construction for this lug is to project the same through the said housing thereby aiding in manufacture.
There has been described and illustratedrbut a single preferred embodiment of the present invention, capable of performing all of the specifically mentioned objects as well as ancillary objects. However, it is apparent to those skilled in the art, that various changes including omissions, additions and rearrangement of elements may be made herein without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly lirnitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the present invention what is claimed as novel and improved is as follows:
' l. A hair curler comprising a housing having a` bore therein, transversely and longitudinally aligned vteeth lixed to said housing, a piston rod in said bore,y a row of teeth on said piston rod extending between said aligned teeth, resilient means for biasing said rod axially of said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for actuating said piston rod,v said compression adjusting means comprisingan internally threaded collar slidably received and fixed with respect to rotation in said bore and having said resilient means in abutment therewith, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably, sliding said collar in said bore, and means operatively connected with said arm andisaid housing 'for preventing axial movement of said arm.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a bore therein, transversely and longitudinally aligned teeth fixed to said housing, a piston rod in said bore, a row of teeth on said piston rod extending between. said aligned teeth, resilient meansl for biasing said rod axially of said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means .for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for actuating said piston rod, said Vcome pression adjusting means comprising an'intern-` ally threaded collar slidably received and fixed with respect to rotation in said bore, a threaded arm in said threadedcollar for adjustably sliding said collar in said bore, said resilient biasing means including a spring abutting said rod and said collar, and means operatively connected with said arm and said housing for preventing axial movement of said arm.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a bore therein, transversely and longitudinally aligned teeth integralwith said housing, a, piston rod in said bore, a row of teeth on said piston rod extending between said aligned teeth, resilient means for biasing said rod axially of said bore, to loppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for actuating said piston rod, said compression adjusting means com-- prising an internally threaded collar having said 4 resilient means in engagement therewith and slidably received and fixed with respect to rotation in said bore, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably sliding said collar, said piston rod actuating means including a slot in said housing, a lug secured to said rod and projecting through said slot, and means operatively connected with said arm and said housing for preventing axial movement of said arm.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a bore therein, transversely and longitudinally aligned teeth integral with said housing, a piston rod in said bore, a row of teeth on said piston rod extending vbetween said aligned teeth, resilient means for biasing said rod axially in said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means,
means for actuating said piston rod, said compression adjusting means comprising an internally threaded collar axially slidable and iixed with respect to rotation in said bore, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably sliding said collar, said resilient means including a spring abutting said rod and saidcollar, .said piston rod actuating means including a slot in said housing, a lug secured to said rod and projecting through said slot, and means operatively connected with said arm and said housing for preventing axial movement of said arm.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a bore therein, transversely and longitudinally aligned teeth integral with said housing, a piston rod in said bore, arow of teeth on said piston A rod extending between said aligned teeth, resilient means for biasing said rod axially in said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for actuating said piston rod, ksaid compression adjusting means comprising an internally threaded collar slidably received in said bore and xed with respect to rotation in said bore, said resilient means engaging said collar, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably sliding said collar, said arm having a iiange xed thereto, and said housing having a recess seating :said flange to prevent axial movement of said arm in said housing.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a handle portion with a bore, and an annular recess in said handle portion, transversely :and longitudinally aligned teeth integral with said housing, a piston rod in said bore, a row of teeth on said piston frod extending between v said aligned teeth, resilient means for biasing said rod axially of said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for `actuating said piston rod, said compression adjusting means comprising an internally threaded collar slidably vreceived and xed with respect torotation in said bore, said resilient means engaging said collar, a threaded arm in said threaded` collar for adjustably sliding said collar within said bore, and said arm having a ange secured there-` to which is rotatively disposed in said recess to prevent axial movement of said arm in said bore.

A hair curler comprising a housing having, a bore therein, a piston rod in said bore, teeth attached to said rod and to said housing in juxtaposition to each other, resilientmeansfr biasing said rod axially of said bore to oppose the operationl of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means,v means for actuating Vsaid piston rod, said compression adjusting meansqmprisins a threaded collar slidably received and fixed with respect to rotation in said bore, said resilient means engaging said collar, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably sliding said collar, means operatively connected with said arm and the bore of said handle for preventing axial movement of said arm in said bore.

A hair curler comprising a housing having a bore therein, a piston rod in said bore, teeth attached to said rod and to said housing in juxtaposition to each other, resilient means for biasing said rod axially of said bore to oppose the operation of said rod, means for adjusting the compression of said resilient means, means for actuating said piston rod, said compression adjusting means comprising an internally threaded collar slidably received in said bore and fixed with respect to rotation therein, said resilient means engaging said collar, a threaded arm in said threaded collar for adjustably sliding said collar, said housing having a handle portion with an annular recess in said handle portion, an annular flange secured to said arm and disposed in the annular recess in said handle portion to prevent axial movement of said arm in said bore.
