This invention relates to a plucking instrument of the kind used for plucking or stripping the hair of dogs.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a toothed member for holding a very thin, sharpened blade in registering slots of the tooth members, the latter being provided with a handle whereby the instrument is manipulated.

Another object is to provide a toothed member with separate, individual, slotted teeth with slotted spacers therebetween and with a cutting blade held in said slots and a rod or bar extending through registering holes in the teeth and spacers and secured to an end tooth and having screw threads on its free end, whereby a handle may be secured on the rod and abutted against the other end tooth whereby the assembly may be rigidly secured together.

With these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth and more particularly defined in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which:

Fig. 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in central, longitudinal section of a plucking instrument embodying a simple form of our invention;

Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a face View of one of the spacers, and

Fig. 4 is a face view of one of the teeth of the toothed member.

The several figures of the drawing are upon an enlarged scale.

Referring to said drawing, the reference character 5 designates a toothed member, composed of individual teeth 8 with one or more spacers 9 between adjacent teeth. With the use of several spacers, the space between the teeth may be increased as desired when used to pluck coarse or thick hair.

The teeth and spacers are clamped together upon a rod ll of square or other non-circular cross section, which rod extends through noncircular holes I0, Illa formed in the teeth and spacers. One end of the rod is headed over a washer I3 as at I4, and the other end of the rod is formed with a round threaded portion [5 which is threadedly secured in a threaded bushing l6, rigidly secured to one end of the handle 1. The handle is preferably hollow and its other end is reduced indiameter, and secured in the reduced end of the handle is a bushing Ii which fits upon the rod. By screwing the handle tightly against the adjacent endmost tooth, the teeth and spacers are tightly clamped together.

The teeth taper from their semi-circular ends and as a preference are given the contour shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Each tooth is formed with a slot I8 which joins with the hole If] and extends to within a short distance from the pointed end of the tooth. The spacers are also formed with slots l9 which join with the holes lfia and open out through an edge of the spacers.

A thin, sharpened blade 20, such as a safety razor blade with square ends, is held in the slots l8, l9, and desirably extends from the rod H to the end of the slot l8. The blade is held in place by the handle when the latter is screwed up tight.

In use the instrument is grasped by the handle and the toothed members passed through a tuft of hair. The operator then places his thumb on the tuft of hair and presses it against the side of the tooth member and draws the toothed member forward through the tuft of hair thereby severing the same from the remainder. The operation is repeated over the remainder of the hair to be plucked. The square or non-circular rod, fitting in the square or non-circular holes in the teeth and spacers, holds the teeth and spacers in alignment. The invention is very useful in stripping matted hair.

Having thus described our invention, it is ohvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of our invention; hence, we do not Wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A plucking instrument comprising a toothed member composed of slotted teeth and slotted spacers therebetween, a rod extending through said teeth and spacers and having a shoulder on one end adjacent an endmost tooth, a handle having a threaded bushing in which the rod is threadedly engaged, said handle when screwed up tight against the other endmost tooth functioning to clamp the teeth and spacers tightly together, and a thin, flat, sharpened blade held in the slots in the teeth and in the slots in the spacers.

2. A plucking instrument comprising a toothed member composed of slotted teeth and slotted spacers therebetween, the teeth and spacers having registering square openings therein, a square rod extending through the holes in said teeth and through the holes in the spacers and having a washer secured on one end engaging an endmost tooth, a handle having a threaded bushing in which a rounded threaded end of the rod is threadedly engaged, said handle when screwed up tight against the other endmost tooth functioning to clamp the teeth and spacers tightly together, and a thin, fiat, sharpened blade held in the slots of the teeth and spacers.

A plucking instrument comprising a toothed member composed of individual, slotted, tapered teeth and individual slotted spacers therebetween, said teeth and spacers having registering square holes therein, a square rod extending through the holes in said teeth and spacers and having a washer rigidly secured on one end engaging an endmost tooth, a hollow handle having a threaded bushing secured thereto in which a round threaded portion of the rod is threadedly engaged, said handle when screwed up tight against the other endmost tooth functioning to clamp the teeth and spacers tightly together, and a thin, flat sharpened blade held in the slots in the teeth and spacers.

4. A plucking instrument comprising a toothed member composed of individual, slotted, tapered teeth and individual slotted spacers therebetween, said teeth and spacers having registering square holes therein, a square rod extending through the holes in said teeth and spacers and having a washer rigidly secured on one end engaging an endmost tooth, a hollow handle having a threaded bushing secured thereto in which a round threaded portion of the rod is threadedly engaged, said handle having a bushing secured upon its other end fitting upon the square rod, said handle when screwed up tight against the other endmost tooth functioning to clamp the teeth and spacers tightly together, and a thin, fiat, sharpened blade held in the slots in the teeth and spacers.
