Description

July 4, 1950 A, 1 FABIS 2,513,853
RECEPTACLE F'QR BACKS QF HAIR, COMBS Filed July 2, 1948 lE-E A Traa/VEYS Patented July 4, 1950 RECEPTACLE FOR BACKS F HAIR COMBS Anthony Fabis, Chicago, Ill.
Application July 2, 1948, Serial No. 36,631
2 Claims.
My invention relates to hair combs of the type disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 770,646, led September 26, 1947, now Patent No. 2,497,983 and wherein the combback is provided with a receptacle for the reception therein of a number of small toliet articles, such as bobby pins, hairpins, straight pins, safety pins, or the like.
With the foregoing in view, an object of my invention is to provide an improved receptacle for a comb back of the class described.
A further object is to provide an improved receptacle wherein the comb back and the cover therefor are formed to cooperate with each other to provide a closed receptacle which is readily slidable to and from open and closed positions.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and
will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, describedand claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device according to the invention, the receptacle being shown in a partially open position;
Figure 2 is an elevational view showing the receptacle in the closed position;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the cover for the receptacle apart from the rest of the structure;
Figure 5 is an enlarged plan view of the comb apart from the cover, parts being broken away and parts being sho-wn in horizontal section.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, I0 designates generally any suitable hair comb comprising a back II and a plurality of depending teeth I2. The comb back I I is preferably formed with a substantially flat intermediate portion comprising an upper edge I3. As will appear hereinafter, the edge I3 defines the oor of a receptacle. Opposite end portions of the edge I3 are upwardly directed to provide buttresses I4 which denne the end walls of a receptacle. Op-I posite `sides of the comb back II below the plane of the edge I3 are formed to provide a pair of laterally-aligned and laterally-oppositely-directed grooves which extend longitudinally of the comb back and which are generally indicated by the reference character I5. Each groove AI5 comprise-s a relatively deep central portion I6 which is vgenerally locatedbetween the buttresses I4, and relatively shallow end portions I'I. The sha1- low end portions Il and deep portions I6 merge with shoulders I8, best seen in Figure 5. The shallow portions I'I, at at least one end of the groove I5, are formed with laterally outwardlydirected bosses I9 providing latch dogs. The purpose of the particular groove structure just described will be apparent hereinafter.
To complete the receptacle partially defined by the edge I3 and the buttresses I4, there has been provided a cover generally indicated at 20, and
which comprises an inverted channel member including a web 2I defining a receptacle top wall and a pair of depending sides 22 defining receptacle side walls. Opposite ends of the side walls 22 are longitudinally extended, as at 23, to provide laterally-spaced and opposed portions which are adapted to overlie opposite sides of the ibuttresses Il when the receptacle is in the receptacleproviding closed position whereby to brace the cover 20 against lateral displacement from the comb back II. The free lower edges of the side walls 22 and extensions 23 are laterally oppositely inwardly directed to provide anges 24 which ride in the grooves I5. Specilically, the flanges 24 seat against the oors of the shallow groove portions Il and are slightly spaced from the iloors of the deep central portions I6 of the grooves. A central portion of each flange 24 is provided lwith a laterally inwardly-directed finger 25 cessed, as at 26, to provide latch detents engageable with the latch dogs I9 to lock the cover 20 in a closed receptacle-providing position.
By providing the stop ngers 25 intermediate the length of the cover 20, the latter is permitted limited sliding movement in both directions until the fingers engage the stop shoulders I8. Thus, not more than half of the floor-providing edge I3 is exposed at any one time, whereby theyreceptacle is in an open position permitting pins or the like contained therein to be dumped outwardly atop the uncovered portion of the kfloor I3. It should be noted also that such sliding movement is permitted in either direction, whereby a double-ended receptacle is provided. Likewise, the provision of a latch I9 and 26 serves to lock the cover 2l! in a receptacle-providing closed position so that the contents of the receptacle will not be spilled in case the comb is accidentally dropped on the floor. Likewise, the latch prevents the cover 20 from accidentally sliding relative to the comb back I I when the comb is in use. Moreover, it should be noted that the receptacle is usuable with any of a plurality of like combs provided with the groove l5 and the buttresses i4, whereby the cover 20 may be made of metal or other ornamental material of greater value than the comb proper.
While I have shown and described whatis now thought to be a preferred embodiment of' theiinvention, it is to be understoodthat thesame susceptible of other forms and expressions., vCon-- sequently, I do not limit myself to the' precise structure shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
-I claim:
` f1. A comb bac-k, comprising a substantially flat upper edge comprising a receptacle floor, a pair of upwardly-directed buttresses carried by said edge -in longitudinally-spaced relation and providing receptacle end walls, a channel-shaped cover providing receptacle side and top Walls, Said comb back being formed with a pair of laterallyaligned and laterally-oppositely-directed longitudinally-extending grooves, said cover yincluding a pair of opposed inwardly-directed anges slidable in said grooves whereby to mount said cover on said comb back for longitudinal movement relative thereto, said anges including at least' a pair of centrally-located and oppositely inwardly-directed fingers, said grooves each including a `relatively deep central portion receiving said fingers therein and relatively shallow end portions receiving said flanges therein, shoulders connecting said end portions with said central portions, said shoulders being engageable with said fingers to limit relative sliding movement of said cover and comb back in both directions, and said cover cooperating with said upper edge and said buttresses todefine a receptacle.
relative thereto, said anges including at least .a pairof centrally-located and oppositely inwardly-directed lingers, said grooves each including a relatively deep central portion receiving said fingers therein and relatively shallow end portions receiving said flanges therein, shoulders connecting said end portions with said central portions, said shoulders being engageable with said --ngers to limit relative slidingrnovement of vsaid ooverand comb back in both ldirections, said cover including opposite vends each .defined by a pair v of Ilaterally-spaced and opposed portions, said `portions lbeing adapted to overlie vopposite sides ofsaidbuttresses with said cover in a `closed lposition whereby to brace said cover against lateral displacement from said comb back, said vflanges and said shallowfportions of said grooves including interengaging portions providing Alatches for releasably locking said cover in said closed position, and said-cover cooperating with said upper edge and said buttresses todeiine a -reoeptacle.
.ANTHONY J. FABIS.
