SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,374, dated December 27, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES W. McOARTY, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Thread-Cutters and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to thread-cutters for use on sewing-machines; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a partial view of a sewing-machine head, showing my threadcutter attached. Fig. 2 is a detached view of my thread-cutter, looking at it from above. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my thread-cutter. Fig. 4 isa longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is an end view.

The operation of my device is as follows: The end at of the cutter B is inserted in the hole a of the presser-foot bar A with its cutting-edge f up, and'the side where the slot 0 starts facing the needle-bar, and secured in this position by means of the set-screw b. To cut the threads, all that is necessary is to bring them up, as shown in Fig. 1. and pass them through the slot 0 and over the cutting-edge), and a slight pull will sever the threads. This may be done with one hand, and will leave the threads long enough to prevent the stitches from coming out, as is sometimes the case where the thread is severed too near the goods.
