This invention relates to a cornice and more especially to a window cornice mounting or support whereby the mounting can be employed for various lengths of window cornices, especially where the cornices are substantially longer than the width .of the window frame, although it can be employed where the ends of the cornice fit snugly against the outer side edges of the window frame.

It is an object of this invention to provide a window cornice support which has a bracket attached to the window frame near each side edge thereof and the interior surfaces of the ends of the cornice have a bracket attached thereto having inwardly projecting portions extending toward each other and adapted to fit into slots in the bracket attached to the window frame. The lower edges of said brackets attached to the inner surfaces of the cornice ends may be notched, if desired, to cause them to remain in position though this is not necessary.

Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an elevation of a cornice with the end portions of the front of the cornice broken away to show the means for mounting the cornice on the window frame;

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1 and looking downwardly from along the line 2-2 in Figure 1, with the top cover removed;

Figure 3 is an isometric view of one pair of the brackets, especially those on the right-hand end of Figures 1 and 2.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral indicates a wall of a building having a window therein surrounded by a window frame comprising side wall portions II and I2 and a top portion I3. Suitable window sashes 14, only the upper one of which is shown, are mounted in the window frame, and there is usually provided a cornice for housing curtain rods, drapery rods, and the like and these cornices sometimes are open at the top or closed at the top as desired. In the present form of the invention, I show the cornice in Figure 1 as having a top portion while in Figure 2 this top portion is omitted, as this type of bracket can be employedwith either type of cornice.

In the drawings, the numeral I6 indicates the top portion of the cornice having end pieces I! and I8 and a front portion IS. The portion 16 may be dispensed with, if desired. Since the 2 mounting for the two ends of the cornice are identical, except being opposite hand, like reference characters will apply. 7

Near the side edges of thewindow frame and near the topthereof are secured brackets 2 I. each having a right angular portion 22 providedwith holes 23 for the reception of screws. 24 "forattaching the bracket to thejwindo'w frame. The bracket 2| has right angular'or forwardly projecting portion 26 which has a vertically disposed slot 21 therein for receiving the extended leg 30 of the bracket 3| having a right angular forwardly projecting portion 32 which has a plurality of holes 33 therein which are adapted to be penetrated by screws 35 for securing the same to the inner surface of the end portions I I or I8.

With the brackets 2| secured to the window frames and with the brackets 3| secured to the inner surfaces of the end pieces I! and I 8, the cornice can be quickly attached in position by raising it above the upper end of the window frame and then lowering it and allowing the angle portions 36 to fit down into the slots 21 in the brackets 2|. If desired, the lower edge of the portion 30 of the bracket 3| may have a plurality of notches 38 therein for preventing endwise sliding or slipping movement of the cornice relative to the window frame.

If desired, the cover portion 16 may have a right angle bracket 40 secured to its lower surface at substantially its central portion by means of a screw 4| and its downwardly projecting leg is provided with a bayonet slot 43 adapted to be secured over a screw 42 secured in the top portion of the window frame and projecting downwardly.

In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific term-s are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.

I claim:

1. In a window frame cornice having end pieces, a bracket attached near each side edge of the window frame and having a forwardly projecting leg provided with a vertically disposed.

slot therein open at its upper end, a bracket secured to each of the inner surfaces of the end pieces of the cornice and having a leg projecting inwardly toward each other and adapted to fit into said slot in the first-named bracket for holding the cornice in position.

2.
