Description
W. M. HENDERSON. COMBINED REVERSIBLE CAR SEAT AND SLEEPING 00mm.
No. 25,116. Patented A1 1g.1 6,1859.
W1 messes menial.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM M. HENDERSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CAR-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,116, dated August 16, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM M. HENDER- SON, of Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seats for Railroad-Cars, the same being reversible, so as to face toward either end of the car, and also inclinable in either direction, so as to be convertible into sleeping-couches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation representing the car seat; Fig. 2, the change produced to make a sleeping couch.
The seat (A) is cushioned on both sides, and jointed to the skeleton frame B, at C. The arms, D, with the connecting lever, E, E, are jointed thereto at F, F.
G forms the front leg or support when used as a seat, and is held in position by the bolt H, fitting in bolt-holes let into the floor. The back is in two pieces, the lower portion I, swinging between the skeleton frame on the center C, with a tenon joint top and bottom, to receive on either end the corresponding mortise in the upper part J so as to raise or lower the height of the back, for either night or day use in reclining or sitting.
In changing from a chair into a sleeping couch, the bolt H, is withdrawn; the foot-- board K, turned down; and the back distended until the bolt-heads F, are stopped by the catches L,the lower arms acting as levers to extend the front support into a leg rest. In reversing, the upper part of the back is disengaged, and the seat made to turn entirely over on the central pivot M, the front support or leg rest acting equally well in either posit-ion of the seat.
What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The construction of a railway reclining chair or couch securely attached to the floor of the car, with the whole chair reversible so as to face either end of the car substantially as described.
2. The mode of varying the height of the back of the chair by making it in two pieces, and suspending the lower portion substantially as described.
3. In combination with a chair reversible as aforesaid, I claim the double acting footboard, single reversing leg rest, and means for extending it, by the action of the arms of the chair, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM M. HENDERSON.
