UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. L. LONG, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
SLEEPING-BER'IHS FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,205, dated August 23, 1859.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. L. Lone, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeping-Berth's for Railroad-Cars; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, made to form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in seats of rail road cars, by means of which I am enabled to arrange two sleeping berths of capacity to accommodate four persons, within the space occupied by two seats of capacity to-seat four persons, described specified and represented as follows- By reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improvement showing the hinged seats, elevated and arranged so as to form an upper berth, at the same time providing space for a lower berth beneath, Fig. 2, is a sectional plan of my improvement, showing the hinged seats in position for day use, the manner of arranging and securing them, for sleeping purposes and also the device for forming the lower berth.
(A) is a hinged seat, formed with a working joint at (a) and hinged to the seat frame ((1) at ((Z).
(e) is a bolt for securing the center of the upper berth as represented,
(i z") is an automatic supporter formed with pivot joints (2) near its points of attachment to the seat frame (d) with a lock joint at (W), and provided with a connecting rod (7'), by means of which the lock joint is made to operate. The parts (2) are made with slots (71-) and recesses and are secured to the parts (i) by means of headed bolts, passing through the slots (at) and secured to the part (i), so thatthe parts traverse sufficiently to allow the recess (m) to grasp the rod (1') and thus perfect the support to the berth, or to release the rod (7*) and allow the working of the joints when it may be required to depress the berth and form seats for day use.
(g, g) is a folding berth, formed with a working joint at (9) and hinged to the seat frame (d) at ((Z).
is a screen hinged to the seat bed (7)), so that it may be depressed beneath the berth (g, 9) when said berth is required for use.
(Z) is a restfor the parts (9) of the folding berth when the same is extended for use, as shown by dotted lines in (Fig. 2) the positon, of the hinged seat (A) shown by dotted lines in (Fig. 2) is changed to that of the berth, simply by elevating the same, the support (2', z) locking itself as the seat (A) is elevated, the bolt (6) may then be forced into its socket (e), and the upper berth will be secured for use-t-he inner ends of the folding berths (g, 9) will then be elevated, the screen (70) depressed and the parts (9) extended, upon the rest (Z), the lower berth will then be ready for use.
Vhen not required for use the berths (g, g) will be folded and replaced as be fore described, the bolt (6) will then be withdrawn, the inner ends of the hinged seats (A) elevated until the recess is free from the rod (T), when a slight pressure upon the under part ofthe supporter (2' 2') will operate its joints and allow the seat (A) to descend to its proper place for day use.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement and combination of the jointed supporter z" 2' 2" m, n, 7",) and hinged seat and back (A with the folding berth (g, 9) screen (70) and rest Z) all constructed and operating so as to form two sleeping berths substantially as herein described.
In testimony of which invent-ion I have hereunto set my hand.
D. L. LONG.
