Description

June 13, 1950 s. CLARE 2511 429 POURING DEVICE Filed July 27, 1948 INVENTOR.
jAML/EL CLA RE ATTORNEY Patented June 13, 1950 POURING DEVICE S'amuelClare, Maplewood, N. J., assignor to Claremould Plastics Company, Newark, N. J.,
a corporation Application July 27, 1948, Serial No. 40,900
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to pourers.
Broadly, it is an object of the invention to provide a pourer particularly adapted for liquor bottles in order to permit the pourer to easily dispense a desired amount of liquor in a glass providing a more uniform flow of liquor in not too large a stream so that the pourer can more readily control the amount desired to be poured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bottle stopper of a, flexible plastic which will safely seal the neck of a bottle and at the same time will not rot or deteriorate with age as will a cork.
A further object of the invention is to provide a, square, hexagonal, octagonal or other form having angles in the nature of a channel depending from the base of the pourer to prevent the bottle stopper portion from revolving and to maintain the same relationship to the pourer so that the air holes in the bottle stopper portion and the pourer will be properly alined.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pourer which can be inexpensively and rapidly formed at the same time making a durable and long lasting device superior to well known bottle stoppers now on the market formed of cork in association with pourers of other materials, such as plastic, metal and like materials.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of this invention, reference is had to the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a view taken through line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a, rear view.
Fig. 4 is a view taken through line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is an isometric projection view of the bottle stopper portion.
Referring to the drawings, numeral l0 represents a pourer comprising an upper portion ll, preferably made of a plastic material and a bottle stopper portion l2, preferably made of a flexible plastic such as polyethylene, which is seated in the base l3 of the upper portion II as will be hereinafter described.
The upper portion II is comprised of the base l3 which has a, flange l4 and a channel Ill between the bottom wall I6 and the flange I4. The upper portion also has a neck I! and a substantially flat hollow upper structure [8 and a spout l9 leading into the upper structure l8, as will be further described. The upper structure IB has a pouring chamber 20 and an air chamber 2|. Both chambers are divided by a wall 22, the
bottom portion of which is vertical and the upper portion diagonal. A small Opening 23 in the wall 22 permits air to communicate between the pouring chamber 20 and the air chamber 2|. An opening 24 is also provided in the back wall of the upper structure 18 which provides atmospheric pressure for the air chamber 2|. The spout I9 communicates with the pouring chamber 20. A hingeable lid or cover 25 is provided in the upper portion of the spout which pivots upon a fin 26 so that when the pourer is in upright position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cover 25 closes the spout l9. However, when the pourer is tilted toward the horizontal position, the cover 25 automatically pivots to a vertical position, so that it does not cover the spout l9 and permits the liquor to flow through the spout IS.
The upper portion 1 l is made of two cooperating halves split longitudinally. Tits 21 and 2B are provided to cooperate with small holes on the opposite edge in order to properly aline the two halves when they are sealed together with an adhesive. 1
The bottle stopper portion I2 is preferably made of a flexible plastic, such as polyethylene, and comprises a round, slightly tapered lower portion 29 to permit it to be seated and wedged into the neck of a bottle, the flexibility of the material providing firm and resilient grasp, so that when the bottle is tilted for pouring, the pourer will not become dislodged from the bottle and only manual force will seat it and remove it from the neck of the bottle. The upper portion 30 of the bottle stopper i2 can be made substantially square, as shown in Fig. 5, or the upper portion 3| can be made octagonal, as shown in Fig. 4. In fact, any polygon can be used in order to prevent rotation of the bottle stopper portion l2 with relation to the upper portion ll. Of course the channel I5 is made in the form of a square or octagon or other shape to conform to the shape of the upper portion of the bottle stopper. The bottle stopper I 2 comprises a large pouring opening 32 and a smaller opening or air channel 33, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. In like manner the bottle stopper portion shown in Fig. 5 has a pouring opening 32' and an air channel 33'. The air opening 33 is alined with an opening 34 in the bottom wall l6 and the pouring opening 32 is alined with a larger opening 35 in the bottom wall It. In like manner, if the bottle stopper portion shown in Fig. 4 is used in place of the one shown in Fig. 5, pouring opening 32' is alined with opening 35 while air channel 33' is alined with opening 34. In Fig. 5 opening 32 and the channel 33 are divided by a vertical wall 36, while the opening 32' and the channel 33 of the bottle stopper shown in Fig. 4 is divided by a vertical wall 36.
In operation, with the pourer in the neck of a bottle of liquor, as the bottle is tilted to a horizontal position, the liquor passes 'frorn the bottle through the pouring opening 32 or-the bottle stopper l2, through the opening 35 and flows into the pouring chamber 2E and thence through the spout l9. Atmospheric pressure is provided through the openings 25 and the air chamber 2| through the openings wrandithrough'the air channel 33 so that the flow of liquorwill not-beprevented due to differences in pressure between the outside atmosphere and the-pressure within the bottle.
While the pourer has been primarily designed for the pouring of liquor, it is obvious that the power can. be 'use'dwfor otherw products-,-such as olive oil, syrups; fla vors, Worcestershire sauce, salad dressings; and like liquids. :It is alsowithin the realm of 'lD'hiSEIlVeIIti'On to permit the pouring -of fine granular substances, suchas sugar, salt and other products-of iikei ungible nature.
It is further obviousthat various charges and modifications maybe ma'de inthe details of constructionand the arrangements of parts without departing frmmthe' generalispirit of the invention.
I claim:
1; A 'pourer comprising (22,11 upper portion: and a lowerfibottle stopper-portion; said upper portion havin a base, a pouring: chamber, an :air chamber, apouring spout communicating with said pouring chamber and a bottom wall' for said upper portion; anair hole'in'said air chainb'er leading to 'the outside atmosphere, an o'peningbetween said air chamber-hand said pouring chamber, alarge opening in said bottom wall, communicating-with -said-:-,poin ing chamb'en a smaller opening in said bottom wall communieating with said air chamber, a 'portiondepending from'said bottom wall, saiddepending portion comprising awiiange and a channelbetween said'fiange 'and"-said bottom W311,"S2;id bottle stopper portion comprising ai-lower portion and tion having a base, a pouring chamber, an air chamber, a pouring spout communicating with said pouring chamber, a lid for said pouring spout, ab'ottom wall 'for said upper portion, an
