3 Claims.
The present invention relates to gas burners and more particularly to flash tube assemblies for such burners.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel arrangement for a ash tube whereby the same is securely held in assembled' relation With a lighter cup at one end thereof and a lighter jet at the 4other end thereof and which is associated with Vthe gas burner in such a way that proper alignment of the various parts is obtained.
Another object of the present Ainvention is to provide a novel flash tube assembly `which is readily Edetachably connected with l,respect to the burner and which will be Well secured in good alignment with the burner when the same is to be operated.
Still a further object of -the present invention is to provide :a novel flash tube system in which the flash tube is securely held in proper alignment with the -pilot llight `at one ,end and with the lighter Vjet at -the other end `and with which lighter jet is associated socket means whereby the flash tube may be readily removed by lifting the tube at the pilot end and withdrawing the tube axially from the socket connection at the .burner end.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a self-aligningiflash tube system in which the ilash tube may be readily disconnected from the .burners to permit removal of the burners from the stove for cleaning purposes.
Another object within the purview of the present invention is to provide novel means for assembling a flash tube Awith Va lighter `jet at one end and a lighter cup at the other end, such means being constituted lby a socket connection at the burner end and an interlocking relation of the flash tube .with the lighter cup bygravity at the other end thereof.
Still a further object ',of the present invention is to provide a novel flash tube connection between alighter cup and a lighter jet whereinthe flash -tube has perfect alignment at'both burner and lighter .ends yand provides axed control of secondary air to the lighter port.
A further `object ofthe -present inventionlis to provide a readily removable flash `tube which yhas perfect alignment at both burner and lighter ends and is adapted to `carry ignition under a main burner section zto a simmer burner.
Still .another kobject .of Athe present invention is to provide ,a novel mounting i4for-a, flash tube-at thezburnerend involvingthe .use of -a socket connection having means lfor directing -theflashV from the lighter jet `over a substantial distance to the burner With which the lighter jet is associated.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a novel Hash tube connection between a lighter cup and a lighter jet wherein the flash tube has perfect alignment at both burner and lighter ends and adjustability with respect to said burner and lighter cup to accommodate variations in the distance therebetween, yet providing for a fixed intake for secondary air to the lighter jet under all conditions of adjustability.
Other objects, features, capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention, as will later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.

`Referring nowmore in detail to the drawings and particularly Figures `l-B, inclusive, a flash tubesystem `selected vto illustrate the pre-sent invention is disclosed in vQonnection with a gas burner assembly Ywhich `may rcontain ya plurality of burners 2 :with associated :gas feeding means ,(not disclosed). Such a burner is shown in the drawings ascomprising ,a simmer burner housing A anda main `burner housing 6 of `substantially annular v`shape `surrounding the simmer housing A in spaced relation thereto. The main burner housing E lis integrally formedwith a lateral extension C8 ladapted to be -`mounted .as disclosed 3 upon a mixer tube casting I8, the said casting Il] being formed with the ducts I2 and I4.
The simmer burner housing 4 is provided with a chamber I6 communicationg with the duct I4 wherein gas and air is mixed for supplying a combustible mixture to the simmer burner head I8 mounted in the upper end of the housing 4 and which is provided with the burner ports in the wall thereof.
The main burner 6 is provided with a base portion 22 and a head 24 secured thereto to provide a chamber 2S communicating by way of a passage extending through the lateral extension 8 with the duct I2 whereby an air-gas mixture introduced into the duct is delivered through the chamber 28 to the burner ports 28 formed in the head 24. The double burner as disclosed is adapted to be operated with the simmer burner alone and with the simmer and main burners together. The control valve (not shown), when turned from the off position, rst opens a passageway causing gas to flow to the simmer burner and then, when turned to the full on position, passes gas to both burners simultaneously. Since the simmer burner receives the combustible mixture rst 'rected to novel means for mounting each of the flash tubes 38 of the burner assembly in proper alignment at one end with a lighter cup 32 associated with a pilot light 34 and with a lighter jet 36 at the other end. The lighter jet 36 is screwthreaded into the wall of chamber 4 and is formed with an enlarged head 38 adapted to secure a flash tube supporting member 4I)V in associated relation with the housing 4. The lighter jet as disclosed is provided with an opening 42 extending axially thereof and which is adapted to direct the combustible air-gas mixture from chamber I6 in an axial direction with respect to the flash tube 36.
Member 4Q is formed with a socket 44 adapted to support the burner end of the flash tube and is further provided with the upwardly and inwardly extending walls 4S and 48 providing an upwardly directed passageway 58 between the simmer burner housing 4 and the main burner housing 6, thereby directing the flash from the lighter jet 36 upwardly for igniting the air-gas mixture emitted from the burner ports 2U. The flash tube 30 at its burner end terminates adjacent the xed opening 53 provided in the member 40 whereby secondary air is admitted to support combustion at the lighter jet and in passageway 50.
The opposite end of the flash tube 30 is adapted to be supported within a recess 60 formed in the upper margin of the lighter cup 32 and said end of the flash tube is formed with an opening 62 adapted to receive a projection 64 extending upwardly at the central portion of the recess S0.
According to the disclosure of Figures 1-3, inclusive, the flash tube 30 is maintained in alignment both with the pilot light and the lighter jet and can be readily and easily assembled and disassembled With respect to the burner and the lighter cup. In the assembly of this flash tube, the same may be introduced into the socket member 4D and dropped by gravity into a position for locking engagement with the projection 64. The member serves to support the burner end of the flash tube in underlying relation to the main burner 6 and also provides novel means for propagating flame from the lighter jet to the ports 20 of the simmer burner. The main burner ports 4 28 are ignited by the provision of the radially disposed slot 66 extending into flame propagating relation with said ports as well as the ports 2D of the simmer burner whereby cross lighting can be effected between the simmer and main burners.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a modied form of connection between the lighter jet and the ilash tube. In this illustration, the burner assembly is shown as conforming to that disclosed in Figures 1 3 wherein the simmer burner housing 4 is provided with the chamber I6 communicating with the ports 28 of the burner I8 mounted in the upper end of said housing 4. The flash directing member 40 is of somewhat similar construction to that shown in Figure 2 except that no socket or bottom wall is provided. However, the same is mounted in association with the housing 4 through the medium of a lighter jet 68 varying in construction somewhat from the lighter jet 36 of the previously disclosed embodiment. In this form of construction, the lighter jet is provided with oppositely disposed lugs 10 and 'I2 adapted to be received through the openings 'I4 and 'I6 formed in the end wall 'I8 of the ash tube 80. Interlocking engagement between the flash tube 8D and the lighter jet 68 is effected by rotating the flash tube 88 into a position such that lugs 'I0 and 'I2 are received by the openings 'I4 and 'I6 after which the flash tube is rotated substantially 90 degrees to a position Where lugs 10 and 'I2 are disposed to engage the end wall 18 of the flash tube for holding the same in proper associated relation with the lighter jet 68. The lugs 'I0 and 'I2 are so disposed as to permit a limited amount of axial movement of the ash tube with respect to the lighter jet 68. Secondary air to support combustion in the vicinity of the lighter jet 68 is supplied through oppositely disposed xed openings TI and I9 formed in the end of the ash tube 80. The ash tube 88 may be held in proper relation to a lighter cup, such as 32, in the manner disclosed in the embodiment of Figures 1-3 of the drawings or, if desired, the flash tube may be formed as illustrated in Figure 6, as will be described hereinafter.
As will be clearly appreciated, since the burner end of the iiash tube 88 is mounted upon the lighter `iet E8, member 48 serves merely to direct the flash from lighter jet 68 upwardly to the ports 2B and does not function to support the ash tube 88. Accordingly, the mounting for the burner end of the flash tube disclosed in this figure may be effectively used with other types of burners where the burner ports may be disposed a shorter distance from the lighter jet than shown.
In Figure 6 is disclosed still another modified form of mounting for a flash tube in a burner assembly, the same being adapted for use in connection with a burner of the type more particularly shown in Figines 1 and 2 of the drawings. In this illustration, the ash tube 82 is mounted in operative position at one end on a lighter cup 84 and at the other end upon a channel member 8B connected in association with a simmer burner housing 4 provided with a chamber I6 as illustrated in the previously described embodiments and which chamber is adapted to deliver Ia combustible air-gas mixture to the ports 20 of a simmer burner I8.
The channel member 86 is provided with a central web 88 disposed adjacent the housing 4 vand an outwardly extending central -web 90, the said web 88 being apertured to fit over a lighter jet 92 mounted in the housing 4 and having an enlarged head 94 adapted to secure the channel member 86 in proper position. The lighter jet 92 is formed with an axial opening 9S for projecting an air-gas mixture axially with respect to the flash tube B2, Adjacent the lighter jet 92 and formed in the central web 9D is a fixed opening 9| constituting an intake for secondary air to support combustion in the environment of the lighter jet 92. The ilash tube 82 is mounted upon the central web Si@ and is held against lateral displacement by the side walls such as 98 of the :channel member. The other end of the flash tube E32 is formed with a restriction |00 to provide an annular recess: fitting within the recess !92 oi" the lighter cup whereby lateral displacement of the flash tube 82 is prevented at and adjacent the lighter ycup and the interlocking relation or the cup with the annular recess formed by the restriction |00 holds the flash tube against axial movement. In this modiiication, the upward displacement oi flash tube 82 is prevented by the base 22 of the main burner housing 6. As will be apparent, the side walls 98, together with the main burner housing, provide a passageway for directing iiames upwardly from the lighter jet S2 to the simmer ports 20 over a substantial distance for operating the simmer burner when desired. As in the previous illustrations, cross lighting between the simmer burner and main burner can Ibe eiiected in the manner hereinbefore described.
In Figure 7 a further modified form oi assembly for a flash tube with a burner and lighter cup is disclosed. In this embodiment the burner may include the housing 4 conforming to that heretofore disclosed in the previously described forms of the invention and which has threadedly mounted therein a lighter jet 36 adapted to serve as securing means `for member 40 constructed as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. In this form of construction, the flash tube |34 is provided with an apertured end wall |06 tting over the enlarged head 33 of the lighter jet whereby the burner end of the flash tube |04' is supported in alignment with the lighter jet 36. The flash tube is further provided with the oppositely disposed fixed openings |08 and |I0 in the side walls thereof for the purpose of supplying secondary air to support combustion in the vicinity of the lighter jet 36. The other end of the flash tube |04 may be supported by and interlocked with a lighter cup in the manner hereinbefore disclosed in Figures 2 `and 6. This form' of construction has all of the advantages hereinbefore set forth and described in `connection with the disclosure of the previous embodiments of the invention.
For the reasons hereinbefore set forth in connection with the description of the embodiment of Figure 4, the member 40 may be dispensed with under the conditions indicated.
It should be noted that in each of the several embodiments of the invention, provision is made for a fixed intake for secondary air to the lighter jet, yet providing for an adjustment of the flash tube with respect to the burner which may be necessary because of variations in the distance between the burner and the pilot light. It should be further noted that, in accordance with the present invention, provision is made for fixed area secondary openings which in certain of the embodiments are independent of the position of the end of the flash tube and which in certain other of the embodiments are in fixed relation to the lighter jet, and independent of the position of the end of the flash tube. From the above description, it will be noted that the channel member serves asa mounting for the end of the liash tube and as a means for maintaining the same in proper relationship to the lighter jet and to the side wall of the gas chamber. Novelty is found in the utilization of a horizontally projecting gas jet as a locating means for the channel member in association with other means for anchoring or holding the channelso located on the jet. One holding means is shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, wherein the jet is equipped with a head which accomplishes the .holding function. When the jet has an integrally formed head thereon, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, the shank of the jet constitutes the locating means and the head thereof .constitutes the anchoring or holding means. Instead of making the head and jet as integral parts, these two means could be forme-d separately, in which case the head could be fastened to the jet in any suitable manner. When the jet is made without a head, other suitable holding means can be employed for holding the channel in its located position.
While we have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a gas burner assembly, the combination of a double burner formed with an inner housing and an outer annular housing spaced therefrom, said housings having chambers for receiving a combustible air-gas mixture and being provided with burner ports, said inner housing having a lighter jet in spaced relation to said inner burner ports, a member located exteriorly on said inner housing in enclosing relation with said lighter jet and providing spaced substantially vertically disposed walls connected by an intermediate web, said walls dening a passageway between said housings for directing the ii-ash at the light jet in the direction of said inner burner ports, said walls and web being formed to provide a socket at the end of said member spaced from the inner housing and which is disposed below the bottom of said outer housing, a lighter cup spaced from said inner housing, and a iiash tube releasably mounted at one end in said socket and having releasable securement at its other end with said lighter cup.
2. A device of the character described, adapted for use with a cooking stove gas burner having a gas chamber provided with a substantially vertically disposed side wall and adapted for holding one end of a flash tube in igniting relationship to said gas burner, said device comprising a channel member having a base, two spaced side Walls and an end wall, said end Wall having an opening therethrough, a stud-like member adapted to extend through and project horizontally from the substantially Vertical side Wall of said gas chamber, said stud-like member extending through and having locating association with said opening in the end wall of said channel member, said stud having a gas-feeding orice therethrough adapted, when installed, to extend into said gas chamber and to constitute a lighter jet, said channel member being constructed to receive and to hold a ash tube with its axis disposed in substantial alignment with the axis of said lighter jet and with its end in spaced but gasfeeding relation to said lighter jet, and holding means engaging a portion of said channel member and holding the same against accidental displacement when said channel member is properly f located on and by said stud-like member.
3. A device of the character described, adapted for use with a cooking stove gas burner having a gas chamber provided with a substantially vertically disposed side Wall and adapted for holding one end of a flash tube in igniting relationship to said gas burner, said device comprising a channel member having a base, two spaced side walls and an end wall, said end Wall having an opening therethrough, a stud-like member adapted to extend through and project horizontally from the substantially vertical side wall of said gas chamber, said stud-like member extending through and having locating association With said opening in the end wall of said channel member, said stud having a gas-feeding orice therethrough adapted, when installed, to extend into said gas chamber and to constitute a lighter jet, said channel member being constructed to receive and to hold a ash tube with its axis disposed in substantial alignment with the axis of said lighter jet and with its end in spaced but gas-feeding relation to said lighter jet, and holding means engaging a portion of said channel member and holding the same against accidental displacement when said channel member is properly located on and by said stud-like member, said holding means consisting of a head on said stud-like member.
