Claims.
The present invention. relates to gas burner assemblies and more particularly to ignition means for propagation of llame from a pilot burner to a .gas burner.
Among the objects of the present invention is to .provide a novel means rfor carrying or directing fiame ignition upwardly from a lighter port to .burner ports through a vertical distance too great to permit ignition by ordinary or conventional means fas now used.
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel ignition Vmeans in the form of an upwardly positioned passageway which will direct the flash occurring on `flash-back to the lighter jet of the burner assembly to ignite a burner through a Vsubstantial vertical distance.
Still anotherfobject of the present invention is to provide a novel means in the form of a channel or the like whereby a high simmer burner is automatically ignited by directing the iash from a lighter jet located in association with a lighter tube and projecting gas through said lighter tube to a pilot burner.
More particularly, the present 'invention has as an object the provision lof novel means for automatically igniting a high simmer burner of a double burner head wherein such means, including the ash tube, is disposed beneath the bottom of the` main burner.
Another object within the purview of the present -invention is to provide automatic ignition means of the type Vimmediately hereinabove set forth which will permit ignition upwardly from a lighter jet over a greater distance than has heretofore been possible by the use of trailer port-s or the like.
Stil-l a further object of the present invention is to provide in a double burner novel means for automatically igniting the high simmer burner constituting a part thereof and which novel means is adapted to ignite the simmer burner from a lighter jet over a greater distance than normally possible with a .minimum of disturbance of simmer flames by products of combustion from the ignition means.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hash directing means for igniting a simmer burner for a `double burner construction, comprising an open channel or the like adapted to cooperate with the housing forming the main burner for effectively enclosing and directing the igniting flash to the simmer burner.
Other objects, features, .capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention, as will 2 later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in plan of a gas burner assembly incorporating novel ignition means formed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in cross section taken in the plane represented by line 2--2 of Figure .1 of the drawings; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation taken in the plane represented by line 3-3 of Figure 2 of the drawings.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, an embodiment selected to illustrate the present invention is shown as being constituted by a mixer tube casting 2 having the ducts 4 and 6 terminating at one end in openings, such as 8, providing means for introducing a source of air adapted to mix with a suitable quantity of gas introduced into the tubes under controlled conditions to provide a combustible air-gas mixture for the gas burners. Formed as an integral part of the mixer tube is a centrally disposed inner housing I2 formed with a chamber I8 communicating with the duct 4. Mounted upon the mixer tube through the lateral extension Ill is an annular shaped outer housing I4 spaced in relation to the housing I2 which provides the annular ue I6. The chamber I8 vof housing I2 is adapted to supply a combustible air-gas mixture to a simmer burner 20 which is in the form of an inverted cup-shaped member pressed into the housing I2 at its upper end and being provided with a plurality of ports 22 constituting simmer ports for the assembly.
The housing I4 is constituted by a base 24 and a burner head 26 adapted to provide a chamber 28 communicating with the duct 6 through a passageway in the lateral extension I0, whereby a combustible air-gas mixture is supplied to the burner ports 30 located in the head 26 and forming the main burner ports for the assembly.
The gas burner assembly further includes a pilot burner 32 having a protecting cup-shaped member 34 associated therewith and which member is formed with one or more inwardly disposed slots 36, depending, of course, on how many burners are -used to form the completed assembly. In the present illustration of the invention, one of four burners for a gas stove is disclosed and, accordingly, the member 34 is formed with four recesses in the upper lmargins thereof. Each of the slots or recesses 36 is adapted to receive the restricted end 38 of a Ilash tube 40 which extends inwardly toward the simmer burner housing I2. Mounted in the housing I2 is a lighter jet 42 having an axial opening 44 therethrough which is in alignment with the inner end 46 of the ash tube. The lighter jet 42 is slotted as at 48 in a direction to cause :dames being emitted through the opening 44 to be initially directed upwardly toward the simmer ports 22.
As will be noted, the lighter jet 42 is disposed beneath the base 24 of the main burner and at a substantial distance from the simmer ports 22 and under normal conditions it would be impossible to ignite gas being emitted through the simmer ports 22 from the lighter jet 42. In accordance with the present invention, however, the channel member 50 is provided having central webs 52 and 54, the former being provided With an aperture 56 for mounting the channel member 50 on the lighter jet 42 to dispose the central web 52 in juxtaposed relation to the housing I2. The central web 54 extends outwardly substantially normal to the central web 52 and terminates in the extension 58 secured to bracket 6@ of the mixer tube casting 2 as by means of a screw or the like 62 whereby the said channel member is held in assembled relation to the burner head.
In order to ignite gas emitted from simmer burner ports 22 from the lighter jet 42 upon the flash-back from the pilot burner through the flash tube 4G, the said channel member 50 includes the oppositely disposed side walls 64 and G6 extending from adjacent the end 46 of the flash tube 4U inwardly to the lighter jet and then upwardly in the direction cf ports 22. It is to be noted that the side walls 64 and 66, together with the housing I4 of the main burner, provide a passageway 68 merging into the annular space I6 for confining the ame and directing it upwardly into the environment of simmer ports 22 to ignite gas being emitted therefrom. Because of the incorporation of channel member 50 within the structure disclosed, it is possible to secure automatic ignition of the gas emitted by the simmer burner over greater distances than has been possible heretofore and permits of a structure inn corporating a high or elongated simmer burner within the annular space provided by an annular burner of less depth.
In the embodiment disclosed, the inner end 46 of the flash tube il is supported by the channel member 56 between the walls 64 and 66 to prevent lateral displacement thereof, and the base 24 serves to prevent upward displacement of this end of the ash tube, thus providing an assembly operable at high efficiency under all conditions for the purposes intended. In order to supply secondary air to the lighter jet, the central web 54 is apertured as at 76 between the end of the lighter jet and the inner end 46 of the ash tube.
The double burner disclosed is adapted to be operated with the simmer burner alone and With the simmer and main burners on together. A control valve (not shown) when turned from the oif position first opens a passageway causing gas to ow to the simmer burner and then, when turned to the full-on position, passes gas to both burners simultaneously. Since the simmer' burner receives gas first and may be operated independently, it is desired to ignite it first. Crosslighting between the simmer burner 20 and the main burner ports 30 is effected by means of the 4 slot 'I2 cut in the burner head 26 and communicating with the chamber 28.
While I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a gas burner assembly, the combination of a housing providing a chamber for receiving a combustible air-gas mixture and having burner ports and a lighter port in substantial spaced relation to one another, a channel member secured to said housing, and a flash tube mounted at one end on said member and having flame propagating relation to said lighter port and having its other end in flame propagating relation to a pilot burner, said channel member having side walls for directing the flash at the lighter port in the direction of said burner ports, said side walls at their lower extremities being disposed closely adjacent the end of said ash tube on opposite sides thereof and extending upwardly from and above said fiash tube in the direction of said burner ports for a distance equal to at least the width of said channel member.
2. In a gas burner assembly, the combination of a double burner formed with an inner housing and an outer annular housing spaced therefrom to provide a central annular flue, said housings having chambers for receiving a combustible air-gas mixture and being provided with burner ports, said inner housing being provided with a lighter port spaced vertically with respect to said inner burner ports, a channel member secured to said inner housing, and a flash tube mounted at one end on said member and having flame propagating relation to said lighter port and having its other end in ame propagating relation to a pilot burner, said channel member having side Walls for directing the flash at the lighter port in the direction of said burner ports, said side walls at their lower extremities being disposed closely adjacent the end of said flash tube on opposite sides thereof and extending upwardly between said flash tube and inner housing an amount equal to at least the width of said flash tube and into said annular flue.
3. In a gas burner assembly, the combination of a double burner formed with an inner housing and an outer annular housing spaced therefrom to provide a central annular flue, said housings having chambers for receiving a combustible air-gas mixture and being provided with burner ports, a lighter jet vertically spaced from said inner burner ports and having a lighter port communicating with said inner chamber, a channel member mounted on said jet, and a flash tube mounted at one end on said member and having flame propagating relation to said lighter port and having its other end in flame propagating relation to a pilot burner, said channel member having side Walls for directing the flash at the lighter port in the direction of said burner ports, said side walls at their lower extremities being disposed closely adjacent the end of said dash tube on opposite sides thereof and extending upwardly between said flash tube and inner housing an amount equal to at least the width of said flash tube and into said annular flue.
4. A gas burner assembly according to claim 3, in which an air intake is provided between said side Walls in said channel member between said lighter port and flash tube.
5. In a gas burner assembly, the combination of a double burner formed with an inner housing and an outer annular housing spaced therefrom, said housings having chambers for receiving a combustible air-gas mixture and being provided with burner ports, a lighter jet spaced from said inner burner ports and below the bottom of said outer chamber, a channel member having a Web and side Walls extending therefrom, said Web being in the form of tWo angularly disposed arms, the upper arm being apertured to t over said lighter jet, and a flash tube mounted at one end on the lower arm of said web and having llame propagating relation to said lighter port and having its other end in flame propagating relation to a pilot burner, said channel member side walls extending from said flash tube to said lighter jet and upwardly therefrom a distance above said ash tube equal to at least the Width of said channel member and into the space between said housings, said side Walls serving to direct the ash at the lighter port up- Wardly between said housings in the direction of said burner ports.
