VULCANIZING TOOL Aug. 5o, 1948 ffl@ E ATTORNIYS Patented June 6, 1950 ENT ,oFF'lACE; a
VULCANIZING TOOL Moritz Cahn, Marshiield, Wis.
Application August 30, 1948, Serial No. 46,873
4 Claims.
This invention relates to vulcanizing tools, and more particularly to a vulcanizing tool for use in applying patches to rubber shoes, overshoes and boots.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified device adapting itself to easy application with respect to a large variety of sizes and shapes of rubber shoes and boots.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated of very simple construction, light Weight and low cost, which will greatly simplify the job of applying rubber patches to footwear.
Further objects will more particularly appear in the course of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tool;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the tool of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross section taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a transverse cross section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
In the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in the drawing, the device comprises a pair of tong legs I--I pivoted at their adjacent ends as by a pivot 2, these tong legs having their medial portion straight and in their normal operative position substantially parallel. The free ends of the tong legs l are bent toward each other and their terminal portions 3--3 straightened to extend substantially parallel one with the other and also substantially parallel with the medial straight portions I-I.
A heating element 5 comprising the conventional resistance coil (not shown), is pivotally associated with the terminal end portion 3 of one leg by a pivot connection 6, this heating element 5 being of conventional construction and having a heating face 1 directed toward the opposite leg. The heating element -5 is further provided with conventional contact plug elements I8 by means of which an electrical conductor element can be attached as desired.
On the terminal end portion 3 of the opposite leg is slidably positioned a pressure plate 8 directed toward the heating face 1 of the heating 2 element and it will be apparent that by rocking the leg elements I--I on the pivot 2, the heating face 'I and pressure plate 8 can be moved toward and away from each other.
A bridge member is provided comprising a rigid strap l0, the ends of which are bent in a similar direction to form offset lugs or abutments ll and I4, and one of these abutments I4 is provided with a through-threaded orice to receive a clamping screw l5 which is conveniently provided with a hand gripping rod I6 by means of which suitable pressure can be directed against the outer edge of the adjacent tong leg. To maintain the strap member I0 in association with the tong members a clip I 2 is secured to the strap as by screws or rivets I3 so that the bridge member Ill can, as desired, be moved longitudinally of the medial straight portions of the tong legs I-I to accommodate boot tops of varying length, and to also modify the pressure applied between the heating plate 1 and the pressure plate 8.
It will be apparent that the tool provides a very convenient, portable device by means of which rubber patches can be easily applied to footwear with the minimum of trouble.
Various shapes and modications in the precise form and arrangement of the parts will readily suggest themselves but within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. Vulcanizing tool comprising tongs, the legs of which are pivoted by their ends, said legs formed with their medial portions straight and substantially parallel in operative position, a heating element mounted on the end of one leg, a confronting pressure pad mounted on the end of the other leg and a bridge member adapted to be slidably adjusted lengthwise of the said medial straight portions of the tong legs, said bridge member formed with means for engaging one leg, and means on the bridge member for exerting inwardly directed pressure against the other leg whereby the heating surface of the heating element can be pressed against the pressure pad.
2. Device of claim 1 in which the heating element is pivotally mounted on the free end of one leg and the pressure pad is slidably mounted on the free end of the other leg.
3. Device of claim 1 in which the bridge' member comprises a rigid strap member having 0H- set abutments at its ends, one of said abutments formed with a threaded orifice, a screw operative in said orifice in alignment with the other abutment and a clip on said strap arranged to slidably engage one leg of the tongs when positioned between the strap and said clip.
4. Device of claim 1 in which the heating element is pivotally mounted on the free end of one leg, the pressure pad is slidably mounted on the free end of the other leg and the bridge member comprises a rigid strap having its ends bent similarly to form parallel aligned abutments, one of said abutments formed with a threaded through orcera. clamping screw .forsaidorioa and means on Said strapfor retaining-itin sliding relationship to the tong legs.
