The outer end-- 3 serve as lateral guides for the free ends of the springs. Top plate i8 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to springs i9 and 23 and is thus adapted to be depressed by downwardly directed pressure brought to bear thereon from above.
The top plate i8 is preferably convexed upwardly or bent downwardly at an acute angle along its lateral edges, as clearly shown in Figs. and 6, for the purpose of buckling the bills upwardly at the center so that they can be easily grasped one at a time between the cashiers thumb and fingers; and said top plate is provided at one end with a pair of ears 2% and 25 which are inclined upwardly at a suitable acute angle whereby to provide support for bills resting on the top plate when the same are bent upwardly at one end (see Fig. 7) as would necessarily be the case when the device is mounted in a compartment which is not long enough to otherwise accommodate the bills lengthwise. Said ears 24 and 25 need not be bent upwardly when the compartment is long enough to accommodate the full length oi the bills.
The top plate is is cut away at 23 between ears 24 and 25 to provide finger clearance to facilitate reaching under and withdrawing a pile of bills from the device. Ears Z4 and 25 are preferably covered with rubber or like material to prevent the user's fingers coming into contact with the edge of the top plate.
A pair of upright sheet metal side pieces 2! and 28 are located at either side of the base plate and top plate and are secured at their bottom ends to the base plate. Each of said side pieces comprises a pair of vertical members 29 and 3B and a cross member 3! which interconnects the upper ends and is integral with the vertical members 29 and 30. Each of the side pieces 21, 2B is reinforced by a stifi angle iron 32, 32, each having ing a horizontal leg which is welded or riveted to the base plate, and a vertical leg which is similarly secured to the respectively associated cross member 3!.
Attached to each cross member 3! is a lug 33, 34 which overlies the adjacent edge portion of top plate l8 and functions as a bill-confining member. Said lugs 33 and 34 are preferably curved on their upper and lower surfaces, convexedly, in more or less streamline fashion and also curved edgewise, as viewed from above, so that their maximum projections are at the midpoints of their lengths. The top surface curvature of the lugs facilitates insertion of bills into the holder, and the lower surface curvature makes for easy Withdrawal.
I have found that by mutually offsetting the lugs 33 and 34-by which I mean that the lugs are so located as to be not directly opposite each other transversely of the top plate-bills can be inserted in the holder with much greater facility than is the case where the lugs are oppositely positioned.
As a further means of holding the stack of bills down on the top plate, without materially obstructing the space overlying the bills so as to interfere with the fingers of the person using the device, I have found it desirable to provide a number of soft rubber teats 35-38 inclusive-there being two such teats secured to each cross member 3|. Said teats are placed at either end of their respectively associated lugs 33, 34 and spaced therefrom; and each teat is designed to overlie the edge of the top plate so as to engage and slightly overlie the top bill of the stack and thus aid in holding down the edge of the top bill.
While these rubber teats are not large enough to offer any material resistance to withdrawal of the bills, they serve to prevent the adjacent edges from curling up and have proved to be really desirable adjuncts to the lugs 33, 34.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7, a stack of bills 39 is shown resting on top plate I8; and the manner in which these are secured edgewise and held down by the lugs 33, 34 and the rubber teats 35-38 is clearly depicted in the cross-sectional views, Figs. 5 and 6.
In some instances the compartment in which the above-described device must be mounted is so deep that if the device were placed on the bottom it would not be conveniently within reach; and I have anticipated such contingencies by providing, as shown in Fig. 6, a pair of sheet metal, suspension brackets 40, 40 formed to slip over the tops of the compartment walls M, as shownsaid brackets having horizontal portions 40a forming shelves on which the device rests. The brackets may be made to accommodate various wall thicknesses.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, a top plate adapted to provide support for a stack of bills, spring means resting on said base plate and operative resiliently to support said top plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, a pair of bill-confining lugs formed with convexly shaped upper and lower surfaces, said lugs being attached respectively to said side pieces and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate, said lugs being mutually offset so as to engage the stack of bills edgewise at points which are not opposite one another transversely of the top plate.
2. A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, a top plate adapted to provide support for a stack of bills, spring means resting on said base plate and operative resiliently to support said top plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, a pair of bill-confining lugs carried by and attached respectively to said side pieces and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate.

A bill-holdingand dispensin jdevice'compris; ing: a base plate, a pair of laterally spaceddea f springs ofisemii e'llipticalltype, eachpivotally anchorediat one end on said baseplate, the otherend of each of said springs being free to slide,..on;s aid base plate, a;- top plate mounted-on said: springs above saidbase plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached-itosaid base plate andtlocated, ateither side ofrsaidtop plate andnextending thereabove, each of said side pieces comprising a pair of spaced vertical members and a cross member interconnecting the upper ends of said vertical members, a pair of angle brackets, each having a horizontal leg secured to said base plate and a vertical leg attached to one of said side pieces, respectively, said angle brackets providing reinforcement for said side pieces, and a pair of billconfining lugs each having convex upper and lower surfaces, said lugs being carried by and attached respectively to said cross members and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate, said lugs being mutually offset so as to engage the stack of bills edgewise at points which are not opposite to one another transversely of the top plate.
5. A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, a pair of laterally spaced leaf springs of semi-elliptical type, each pivotally anchored at one end on said base plate, the other end of each of said springs being free to slide on said base plate, a top plate mounted on said springs above said base plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, each of said side pieces comprising a pair of spaced vertical members and a cross member interconnecting the upper ends of said vertical members, a pair of angle brackets, each having a horizontal leg secured to said base plate and a vertical le attached to one of said cross members, respectively, said angle brackets providing reinforcement for said side pieces, a pair of bill-confining lugs carried by and attached respectively to said cross members and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate, each of said lugs being formed with convex upper and lower surfaces to facilitate insertion and removal of bills, said lugs being mutually offset so as to engage a stack of bills edgewise at points which are not opposite one another transversely of the top plate, and small sized inwardly extending teats carried by each of said cross members adjacent either end of said lugs and spaced from said lugs. said teats being adapted to overlie and engage the respective edge portions of the stack of bills and thus aid in holding the bills on the top plate.

A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, a top plate adapted to provide support for a stack of bills, spring means secured to said base plate and operative resiliently to support said top plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, a pair of large sized bill-confining lugs having convex upper and lower surfaces, carri d by and attached respectively to said side pieces and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate, and small sized inwardly extending teats carried by each of said side pieces adjacent either end of said lugs and spaced from said lugs, said teats being adapted to overlie and engage the respective edge portions of the stack aphasia-riser salamander thebi llsan the.-

a pairnotupnishtnside pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, and a pair of billconfining lugs carried by and attached respectively to the upper portions of the side pieces and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate, said lugs being formed with convex upper and lower surfaces to facilitate insertion and removal of bills.

A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, a pair of laterally spaced leaf springs of semi-elliptical type, each pivotally anchored at one end on said base plate, the other end of each of said springs being free to slide on said base plate, a top plate mounted on said springs above said base plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate and located at either side of said top plate and extending thereabove, each of said side pieces comprising a, pair of spaced vertical members and a cross member interconnecting the upper ends of said vertical members, a pair of angle brackets, each having a horizontal leg secured to said base plate and a vertical leg attached to one of said side pieces, respectively, said angle brackets providing reinforcement for said side pieces, and a pair of bill-confining lugs each having upper and lower convex surfaces, carried by, and attached respectively to, said cross members and overlying the respective edge portions of said top plate.

A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, an elongated top plate spaced above the base plate and adapted to support a stack of bills, a pair of side by side, upwardly arched, semi-elliptical leaf springs disposed beneath and len thwise of the top plate, having the central portions thereof connected fixedly to the central portion of the top plate, having certain adjacent ends thereof anchored to the base plate and their other ends in sliding engagement with said base plate and serving resiliently to support said top plate, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate, located at opposite sides of the top plate and extending thereabove, and bill-confining lugs attachedto, and extending inwards from, the upper portions of the side pieces and overlying the sides of the top plate, each of said lugs being formed with convex upper and lower surfaces to facilitate insertion and removal of bills from said device.

A bill-holding and dispensing device comprising: a base plate, an elongated top plate spaced above the base plate and adapted to support a stack of bills, a pair of side by side, upwardly arched, semi-elliptical leaf springs disposed beneath and lengthwise of the top plate, having the central portions thereof connected fixedly to the central portion of the top plate, having certain adjacent ends thereof anchored to the base plate and their other ends in sliding engagement with said base plate and serving resiliently to support said top plate, means on the base plate for preventing said other ends of the springs from spreading laterally away from 7 one another, a pair of upright side pieces attached to said base plate, located at opposite sides of the top plate and extending thereabove, and bill-confining lugs attached to, and extending inwards from, the upper portions of the side 5 pieces and overlyin the sides of the top plates, said lugs each being formed with convex upper and lower surfaces to facilitate insertion and removal of bills from said device.
