INVENTOR. Z/Zax 0/" Zak, W mofad ATTD RN EYB Patented Apr. 18, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in cases for holding cigarettes, and more particularly to a case which is attractive and can be easily manipulated.
It is an bbject of the invention to provide a device for holding cigarettes and the like, which device has openings to enable a view of the contents thereof. The device not only is a convenient means for carrying cigarettes, but also is in the nature of a novelty which is attractive and amusing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container for cigarettes in which the cigarettes are positioned in compartments in pairs, said compartment having openings to expose the cigarettes therein so that it can be easily ascertained which compartment is holding a cigarette.
The above and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in section of a device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line tl of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of compartments used in the device.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the compartinents.
Fig. '7 is a view showing details of the compartments.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the manner in which the device is opened to expose a cigarette.
Fig. 9 is a plan view of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken on the line Ill-l of Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is an end view of one of the compartments of the modified form.
Fig. 12- is a view showing the manner in which the modified form of the device shown in Fig. 9 is opened to expose a cigarette.
Referring to the drawing, the cigarette container is shown to comprise end compartments I, and intermediate compartments 2. Each of the compartments is provided on one side with an upper partition 3, and a lower partition on the other side 4, (see Fig. 6). Passing from one end compartment I to the other end compartment I, is a spring 5.
There is a spring at the upper end of the compartment and at the lower end of the compartment. Each spring embraces a shoulder 6 (see Fig. 4) which is integral with a head '5, which abuts a ledge 8 in an end member i.
In operation, the cigarettes are placed between the partitions 3, and are exposed by openings 9 in the compartment. To remove a cigarette the springs are extended to open a compartment as shown in Fig. 8. It will be seen that a cigarette can be obtained from one side of the container and another cigarette from the other side of the container.
In Fig. 9, is shown a modified form of the invention in which the compartments are curved, the operation of the device means substantially the same as above described.
The herein disclosed cigarette container is obviously of simple structure and enables a person to ascertain which compartment contains a cigarette without opening the container.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
A cigarette container comprising a plurality of recessed elements providing end compartments and intermediate compartments, said elements being positioned in edge to edge engagement to form a unitary construction, a spring extending through the top and a spring extending through the bottom of said elements to flexibly join said elements, a central partition in each element extending in a. plane parallel to the plane of the engaging edges and medially therebetween, a lower separating partition extending outwardly of said central partition centrally of said partition at a right angle thereto, an upper separating partition extending outwardly of said central partition in the opposite direction to said lower separating partition, said separating partitions coacting to divide said elements into several parallel compartments, each for a single cigarette.
