Description

March T14, i950 .,s. MATSUMOTO 2950?@,694
PAIR BUTTON FASTENING Filed Sept. 25, 1947 I INVENTOR.
A'ITCI RN EYS Patented Mar. 14, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
My present invention relates to an improved button and clasp and which comprises a pair of buttons adapted to be secured to the closure edges of a garment and each button having mating clasp elements on the under side so that when the buttons are pressed together at the proper point on their peripheries, the clasp elements will engage to retain the buttons secured and to maintain the garment closed.
The buttons are decorative and ornamental in appearance and the clasp elements are so arranged as to be hidden and thus do not detract from the symmetry of the buttons.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplied structure within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of the attached buttons.
Fig. 2 is a rear cross sectional View of the buttons showing the clasp.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view at line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an exploded view of the mating clasp.
Fig. '5 is a View of the clasp elements engaged.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the female clasp.
Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the modification of the clasp as further illustrated in Figure 8.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified female clasp element.
Referring now to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the present preferred embodiment of my invention I have shown the closure edges 2 and 4 of a garment having buttons or ornaments 5 and 6 formed with lower lobes or bases 8 apertured at l to receive thread I2 sewn therethrough.
The edges of the buttons are serrated or toothed at I4 and have ornamental hemispheres I6 thereon and as shown with the closure edges overlapping to close the gap, the teeth of the button mesh.
In order to secure the buttons together I provide the button with a female housing comprising a wall I3 and edge walls 2U joined by end wall 22. The inner faces 24 of Walls 20 converge to abutments 25 land then diverge at 28 to form pockets 30. If desired the housing may have a closed wall 32 opposite and spaced from the Wall I8.
The housing is secured to the button as by cement along the faces of the walls 22, and a flat U-shaped spring 34 is shaped with arms connected by a head to conform to the inner contours of the housing when expanded.
The male portion of the clasp comprises a heart shaped tongue 36 which tapers to a point at 38 and is secured as by cement along the knob and base 40, to the button E.
Thus as the buttons are pressed together-to mesh the teeth, the clasp members are mated and the tongue will expand the spring so that the ends or jaws 42 thereof will engage the recesses 44 of the neck of the tongue to clasp the same. Pressure against the buttons will snap the tongue from the grasp of the spring jaws 42.
Thus the ornamental buttons may be secured in closed and meshed position by the hidden clasp elements and a neat desirable appearance will be effected to the closed garment.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a garment fastener, the combination which comprises a pair of ornaments each having a button head and a base with thread receiving openings in the base, a female housing providing a socket carried by one of said ornaments and having outwardly extended side walls with a pocket in the inner end and with a throat positioned between the pocket and area between the said side walls, a U-shaped spring with outwardly extended arms joined by a head with the arms constricted adjacent the head to correspond with the throat of the socket with the head of the springs in the pockets thereof, and with the outer ends of the arms contracted to provide gripping jaws, and a heart shaped tongue carried by the other of said ornaments with notches in the sides of the tongue for receiving the jaws of the spring for resiliently holding the tongue in the socket with the ornaments juxtapositoned.
2. A garment fastener as described in claim 1, wherein the outer edges of the ornaments are provided with teeth and the teeth are held in meshing relation by the tongue and socket elements carried thereby.
3. A garment fastener as described in claim' 1, wherein the socket and tongue are positioned in a plane parallel to the faces of the ornaments and the said socket and tongue are hidden by the faces of the ornaments.
4. In a garment fastener, the combination which comprises a pair of ornaments having a button head and a base with thread receiving openings in the base, a female housing having outer and inner walls providing a socket carried by one of said ornaments having outwardly extended side walls with a pocket in the inner end and with a throat positioned between the pockets and area between the said side walls, a U-shaped spring with outwardly extended arms joined by a head with the arms constricted adjacent the headvto correspond with the throat of the socket with the head of the spring in the pockets thereof, and with. the outer ends `of the :arms contractedlto provide gripping jaws, and a heart shaped tongue with a recess in one side to receive the inner wall of the socket carried by the other of said ornaments and having notches in the 'sides .fof'fthe tongue for receiving` the jaws of the spring to resiliently hold the tongue in the sock'etw'ith the ornaments in assembled relation.
