NITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ABEL H. FROST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,829, dated November 22, 1881.
Application led January 15, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ABEL H. Faos'r, of Chicago, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the vclass of buckles which have the tongue hinged to an end bar of the frame and the free end of the tongue supported centrally as to the frame. It is more especially an improvement on the buckle patented to W. T. Beaser in Letters Patent No. 176,053, dated April 1l, 1876, wherein the free end of the tongue is shown anddescribed as resting on the central stud, E. ln practical use of the buckle mentioned it is found to be dilticult to keep the tongue on the studthat is to say, itslips od' to one side. This gives a bad 'appearance to the buckle and throws the strain sidewise upon the tongue, with danger of its drawing through. I have remedied this fault by making the tongue of such shorter length as to clear the stud entirely, thereby allowing said tongue to rest on an underlying fold of the strap or straps. I have also broadened the central depressed cross-bar upon which the stud is formed, so as to support the leather beneath the free end of the tongue.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a single strap and buckle through cc x ot Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a topview of the buckle and strap.
The same letter indicates the same part in both figures.
II H are the side bars, and B and C are the end bars, of the buckle-frame.
D is the depressed central cross-bar, and E a stud projecting upward from the middle of said cross-bar D. n
A is the tongue, hingedto the end bar B. Said tongue A is made of such` length as to fairly clear the stud E when dropped down within the frame. The strap or straps F being inserted in the manner contemplated in this (No model.)
.wardly past the cross-bar D, said cross-bar is extended on the side toward the tongue, to support the leather beneath the point on which- .the freeend ot' the tongue bears, as seen in Fig. 1, and as indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 2.
A secondary7 but material advantage of the construction shown is found in the fact that the tongue, arranged to rest on a fold of the leather, instead of resting upon the stud, serves to hold the lower fold or folds of the strap snugly down to the cross-bar, or about the base of the necessarily tapering stud, whereby the full strength of the stud is made available and all parts lie more closely together. By curving the tongue to bear broadly upon the strap, as shown in Fig. 1, said strap being supported by the cross-bar D in the manner described, strain upon the buckle does not materially tend to draw the tongue into the surface upon which it rests.
While the cross-bar D is shown in Fig..2 as having a curved edge, or as being made broad, for the purpose stated only in its central portion, it may obviously be ot' equal breadth throughout its length.
I claim as my invention- In the buckle described, having the central depressed cross-bar,D,provided with the stud E, the tongue A, hinged to the end bar B, and made of such length as to clear the stud, and the eross-barD extended to give support to the leather beneath the end of the tongue, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
