This invention relates to apparatus'for Waving and curling hair.

The "principal objects of the invention are' directed to a device for waving andcurling the hair which is characterized by its simplicity of operation and efficiency in attaining Vthe desired results.

According to the novely features of construc-` tion, the maximum control of the hair is possible in the winding operation, the/end papers commonly used in winding operations are eliminated, and the hair is wound under uniform ten-` sion to produce a more perfect curl or'wave formation than is possible with prior artdevices.

According to certain novel features of construction the ends of the hair are not bunched, the winding of the hair is accomplished readily and easily and the desired results may be obtained by an unskilledperson, Whereas prior art devices require considerable skill in their operation.

The device because-of its novel form is adapted to pick up the natural trends of the hair and operate so as to wind the hair naturally.

With the foregoing and..various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts? as will be hereinafter more particularly pointedl out-in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the winding arbor of the invention with the retainer thereof associated therewith;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the winding member of the apparatus;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the retainer of the invention and Fig. 4 is an end elevational view of the device of my invention as sho-Wn in Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.

A winding arbor 2 is provided which is in the form of a cylinder having concave longitudinal sides, as shown.

Intermediate the ends of the member 2 there are alternate grooves and ridges 4 and 6. The ridges in cross section are preferably formed 2 similarly to'involutegearteeth. The depth of the grooves, asflwillbe observed, decreases outwardly from' thecentr'al portion of the member 2.` It has been rfound'that' the member formed i substantially as shown and described may bey easily and readilymanipulated as by rotating for winding up the hair fofr wavingy and curling with the'result thaty the -wave 'for curl produced is natural in appearance,y the ends of the hair are notbunched or' distorted,v the winding is controll'able and is uniform.;l

In operating, the member 8 is inserted in the socket at one end of the member 2 and by manipulating the

8 and 2 hair may be wound on the arbor by rotating it. The amount of hair being wound and the number of turns given the arbor may vary within Wide limits according to the results desired.

With the Winding operation completed as desired, the retainer is slipped over the arbor with the tabs in the seats thereof whereby it is releasably held. The sides of the opening of the retainer substantially coincide with the sides of the arbor and hold the windings of hair until it is desired to remove the arbor when the retainer is removed and the hair unwound.

The retainer may be applied while the member 8 is associated with the arbor or it may be removed for that purpose, the procedure dependins on the user.

The invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended tobe embraced therein.

What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A device for receiving windings of hair for waving or curling the same comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical body of a certain length having alternateannular grooves and ridges intermediate opposite ends thereof and relatively smooth end surface portions outside said grooves and ridges and at opposite ends of said body, the outer peripheral faces of said ridges and end surface portions curving outwardly in opposite directions from intermediate opposite ends of said body to said opposite ends whereby said body is of relatively larger diameter at its opposite ends than intermediate said ends, a retainer of resilient stretchable material having an elongated opening therethrough which is provided With longitiudinal side edges complemental to the contour of the sides of the body and opposite end edges for engaging opposite ends of the body, the length of said opening being slightly less than said certain length of the body, said retainer being manually longitudinally stretchable for receiving said body in the opening thereof whereby when released the end edges of said opening yieldingly embrace opposite ends of the body and the longitudinal side edges of said opening tend to lie against longitudinal sides of the body.

2. A device for receiving windings of hair for Waving or curling the same comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical body of a certain length having alternate annular grooves and ridges intermediate opposite ends thereof and relatively smooth end surface portions outside said grooves and ridges and at opposite ends of said body, the outer peripheral faces of said ridges and end surface portions curving outwardly in opposite directions from intermediate opposite ends of said body to said opposite ends Whereby said body is of relatively larger diameter at its opposite ends than intermediate said ends, a retainer of resilient stretchable material having an elongated opening therethrough which is provided with longitudinal side edges complemental to the contour of the sides of the body and opposite end edges for engaging opposite ends of the body, the length of said opening being slightly less than said certain length of the body, said retainer being manually longitudinally stretchable for receiving said body in the opening thereof whereby when released the end edges of said opening yieldingly embrace opposite ends of the body and the longitudinal side edges of said opening tend to lie against longitudinal sides of the body, said body having opposite transverse end faces and the end edges of the opening in the retainer having engageable recesses and projections for engagement with the end faces of said body.

3. A winding device for receiving windings of hair comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical body having alternate annular grooves and ridges intermediate opposite ends thereof and relatively smooth end surface portions at opposite ends of said body, the outer peripheral faces of the ridges and the end surface portions of said body curving outwardly in opposite directions from intermediate opposite ends to the opposite ends of said body, a retainer of resilient stretchable material having an elongated opening therethrough with longitudinal side edges complemental to the contour of the sides and ends of said body for engaging said body, the length of the opening of said retainer being slightly less than the length of said body, said retainer being manually longitudinally stretchable for receiving said body in the opening thereof whereby when released the end edges of the opening yieldingly embrace opposite ends of said body and the longitudinal side edges of the opening tend to lie against longitudinal sides of said body.
