Description

(N0 Model.)
0. T, WRIGHT.
CRANK HANDLE.
No. 249,720. Patented Nov. 15,1881.
WITNESSES I NVENTOR: d BY MA f ATTORNEYs.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. WRIGHT, or BODEGA, CALIFORNIA.
CRANK-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,720, dated November 15, 1881.v
' Application filed May 21,1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES '1. WRIGHT, of Bodega, Sonoma county, California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Crank-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a longitudinal section through my improved handle; and Fig.2 is a View of outside end of the handle and a portion of a crank to which it is applied.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the attachment of handles to hand wheels or cranks of machinery of any description, and to provide means for the lubrication of the internal parts of said handles, which are constructed to avoid blistering or otherwise injuring the hand of the operator.
My invention consists of a handle hollowed longitndinallyand containingaheaded bo1t ,the shoulders of the head of said bolt acting against shoulders formed by an enlargementof the cavityin thehandle, which enlarged cavityis closed by a screw plug or cap at the outer end of the handle, the inner end of the headed bolt carrying a jam-nut and an outer nut, between which the crank is held, an oil-chamberbeing also provided between the outer cap and the head of the bolt.
I more particularly describe my invention as follows:
The body of my improved handle A is bored longitudinally, as at a, and the cavity so made is enlarged, as at b, so that the body of the bolt B will loosely fit the smaller bore, a, and its head 0 will also loosely fit the enlarged cavity 1), allowing the shoulder formed by the head 0 of the bolt to rest against the inner shoulder of said cavity 1), as at d. A jam-nut, D, is run upon the inner threaded end of the bolt B,
leaving a little play or looseness between it and the inner end of the body A of the handle. The crank E is then slipped on between said jam-nut D and the outer retaining-nut, F. Upon holding the bolt B and jan1nut D, so as to prevent their turning, the entire handle can be secured to the crank E by tightening the outer nut, F, in such manner as will permit the body A of the handle to remain fixed in the hand, while the crank is caused to revolve at any desired speed, thus avoiding all injury to the hand of the operator.
The outer screw plug or cap, P, which is firmly screwed into the body A, serves to cover the internal parts of the handle and prevent the accumulation of dust thereon.
The chamber 0, between the head 0 of the bolt B and the inner end of the cap P, serves as an oil-receptacle, the filling of which will insure a constant lubrication of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In combination with the body Aofa crankhandle, provided with longitudinal cavities a and b and cap P, the headed bolt B and nuts D and F retaining the crank E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
-2. In combination with the interior of the body A of a crank-handle, provided with headed bolt B and cap P, theoil-chaniber O, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
CHARLES THEODORE WRIGHT.
