UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER H. OLSON, OF DEGATUR, ILLINOIS.
SCREW-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,261, dated May 22, 1883.
Application filed December'2, 1881. Renewed September 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER H. OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Screw-Driver, of which the following is a specification, and which has never been patented to me nor to others, with my knowledge and consen t, in any foreign country.
The invention will be understood as set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows my deviceentire. Fig. 2 is a section, and Fig. 3 an enlarged representation, of the handle and collar. Fig. 4 shows the pawl attached to the end of the handle.
A is the shaft that carries the screw-driver. This shaft is provided with a screw-thread or Worm, extending nearly or quite over its entire length. Bis the handle, constructed to receive and hold the projection of band I).
O is the collar, grooved in its inner surface, to conform to the projection onthe shaft, and also grooved in its outer circumference to re ceive band b. The collar-O is formed in halves, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and placed together around the shaft A, and the band 7) consists of a piece of small metallic rod bent around the collar and the ends extended to form the means for attaching the handle.
fis a ratchet formed on the exterior of the collar 0, and e is a spring pawl attached to handle B, as shown in Fig. 4. The pawl e is let into a notch or cut-out portion of the bandle, and is preferably formed of two springlegs--one to engage the ratchet and the other to rest upon the offset in the handle and insure the engagement of the other limb with the ratchet. In operation, the screw driver is placed in position and the handle forced down, thereby revolving the shaft and driving the screw. Should one stroke of the handle be insnfficien t, the operation may be repeated, as the collar will revolve in the band on the upstroke without affecting the shaft.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim asnew and desire to secure hyLetters Paten t- 1. In a screw-driver, the combination of the threaded shaft A. threaded split collar 0, PFC. vided with the ratchet f, with the encircling band I), handle B, and pawl e, substantially as set forth. n
2. In a screw-driver, the com bination of the threaded shaft A, threaded collar 0,1)I'0VI16 with theexteriorratchet,f, and divided band I), encircling said collar and projecting at the ends to form the means'of attachment for the handie, with said handle B and spring-pawl e, all substantially as herein set forth.
' CHRISTOPHER H. OLSON.
