3. A. NDICOTT 'PLASTERERS TOOL Flled June P9 lQAA Patented Feb. 7, 14950 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE PLASTERERS TOOL Claude A. Endicott, Cottage Hills, Ill.
Application June 29, 1944, Serial No. 542,642
1 Claim. l
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in plasterers tools, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character comprising, in a single tool, means for cutting out mortar keys, mortar joints in masonry work, cutting out cracks in plaster to be pointed up, scraping various surfaces and for performing numerous other operations common to this line of work.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a plasterers tool of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable. highly eicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing, and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention` Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one end portion of the tool.
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a plan view of an end portion of a modification.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially on the line 6--6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in side elevation, showing an end portion of another modification.
Figure 8 is a plan view of the modification of Figure 7.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character I designates a metallic rod of suitable length and diameter. The rod I comprises, at longitudinally spaced points, enlarged or bulbous portions 2 defining therebetween a handle 3. The portions A2 constitute stops for preventing the hand from slipping longitudinally on the handle 3.
On one end of the rod I is an angularly projecting cutter which is designated generally by reference character 4. bifurcated in a manner to provide spaced, parallel blades 5 comprising externally beveled cutting edges E. An impact head 1 is :formed substantially at the joint between the cutter 4 and the rod l.
The cutter 4 is slotted or f The other end portion of the rod I is ilattened in a manner to provide an elongated, tapered plate 8. At its outer end, the plate 8 terminates in an ang-ularly projecting, tapered scraping blade 9.
The cutter l on one end of the rod l may be used for expeditiously cutting out cracks in plaster to be pointed up, for cutting out mortar keys `between laths, for cutting out mortar joints in masonry work, et cetera. The slot or bifurcatgon in the cutter 4 facilitates clearing the removed material and the bevel 6 of the blades ii inclines and spaces the walls of the cut. If the work is particularly difficult, the impact nead 'i may be struck with a hammer for driving the cutter i into the material. The blade 9 may be conveniently used for scraping old finish coat from plaster, for removing plaster from wood lathe, for removing rough edges from plaster, for removing wallpaper, et cetera.
In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, the plate 8 is provided, on its outer end, with an integral, angularly extending blade I0 comprising beveled scraping teeth ll. The teeth Il are adapted to scrape particularly hard or tough surfaces.
In the modification of Figures 7 and 8 of the drawing, an integral, longitudinally curved plate l2 is provided on one end of the rod l. The plate l2 tapers to a cutting edge I3 on its free or outer end. The plate l2 may be used for prying off loose plaster and stucco, also as a trowel in places where the usual trowel is too wide.
It is believed that the many advantages of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted 'to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A plasterers tool, comprising a metallic rod having spaced bulbous portions thereon, provid4 ing a gripping handle therebetween, said .rod merging into an integral shank consisting of a flattened portion ol gradually increasing width and decreasing thickness progressively from said handle, and terminating in an integral, perpendicular portion having a bevelled scraping edge extending in a plane transverse to the axis of said rod.
