Speccation of Letters Patent No. 24,940. dated August 2, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, BENJAMIN F. KILLAM, of liraintree, in the county ot- Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Turn-Key for Pulling Teeth; and l do hereby declare that the tollowing is a true and :tull description.

rlhe invention consists in so applying the mechanical torce to the tooth, as to litt it out in a direction that is perpendicular to the jaw. instead otl breaking, or prying it over in the inanner ot the instruments heretofore in use.

The nature ot' lny invention consists ot' an improved tulcruni. on the principle ot the instruments now in use, and this fulcruin is placed within a hollow rotatory t'ulcruln, but when in use. and is placed against the jaw.y it is stationary. and the other fulcruin moves within it. giving the claw to the instrun'ient an upward or downward direction.I by which the tooth lifted directly out of the jaw, without any danger or possibility ot breaking` either the tooth or the jaw. The hollow rotator)7 fulcruin is entirely new, and l claiin this as a new and original invention.

The iinIn'Ov'ement to the fulcruni now in use. consists 'in so attaching; the claw to it, as to ljive it more power and increased torce in lifting the tooth out from the jaw.

The hollow tulcruni is not entirely round. but on one side is somewhat elliptical. to enal'ile it to hold a tirnier position against the jaw. @ne side of the hollow fnlcruin is open so as to admit the other tulcruin within it. And the handle or bar, passes through both` and is Jfastened on by a screw in the end of the bar. which niay be taken out, and the instrument properly adjusted for pulling', either an upper or under tooth, and for adapting.l it to either side of the mouth. The hook or claw is attached to the old tulcruni7 which rotates within the new or hollow fulcruin.

That I claim as my invention is the hollow fulcruin, within which the other fulcruin moves. whlch so applies and directs l the force used. as to pull or litt the tooth directly out troni the jaw.` instead of breaking; or pryinfc` it over, as the instruments now in use are liable to do, without endangering either the tooth or the jaw, and causingcomparatively little pain to the patient'.

To enable others to malte and use my invention.y l will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

l take theanost approved forni of the turnkey now 1n use, as is seen by the draw-- ing'. herewith presented. to which is added the hollow ulcruin. within which the old fulcruni rotates or moves.

a, is the handle by which the instrument is operated.

is the bar to which the handle is attached at one end and the t'ulcruin at the other.

n, is the inside tulcruin to which the claw ot the instrument is attached.

(l, is the claw which fastens upon the tooth.

e, is the outside, or hollow tulcruin, which rests against the jaw, and within which the inside fulcruin, moves or rotates.

jf, is a square hole in the center ot the inside t'ulcruin. through which the end ot the bar passes, and is fastenedon b v a screw.

g, is the screw, which passes into the end of the bar and which 'tastens the 'Fulcrum on the bar.

That l claim as iny invention. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The hollow fulcruin as herein described.
