SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,161, dated January 29, 1895. Application filed August 17, 1894- Serial No. 520,583. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANqoIs CHAGNOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cornwall, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump or Book Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive implement for pulling stumps and poles and forlifting heavy stones from the ground, which shall be so constructed that all the power required to lift an ordinary stump or pole or a stone weighing from one to two tons may heapplied by a single operator.
l/Vith these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel construction of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, numbers and letters being used to designate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel stump and rock puller one side of the body being broken away to show the operation of the lifting lever and pins, and Fig. 2 is an elevation as seen from the left in Fig. 1.
A denotes the body which consists of two side pieces denoted by l and upper and lower blocks denotedrespectively by 2 and 3. Sockets 4 are provided both in the front and back of the upper block to receive a removable leg 5, sockets 6 upon the side pieces to receive shorter legs denoted by 7 and a socket 8 is hinged to the upper portion of said body and is adapted to receive eitherof the legs to give a support to the implement should it require to be braced from above.
9 is a curved plate which is rigidly secured to the upper block to give a support to the body should it be found convenient to rest it against a pole in lifting the latter.
1O denotes series of corresponding holes in the side pieces which are adapted to receive pins 11, these pins being preferably connected by a chain 12 to prevent either from being lost.
13 denotes the liftinglever which is preferably constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and is provided in its under side with two notches 14 either of which is adapted to engage one of the pins.
15 denotes a yoke which is hinged to the lifting lever and to which a lifting chain 16 is attached, the lower end of this chain being preferably provided with a hook 17 to allow it to be caught into any convenient link of the chain as shown in Fig. 1. The free end of the chain in use is passed under or around a stump, rock or pole and then the hook is caught into a link of the chain the lever being placed as shown in the drawings, that is with both of the notches in engagement with the pins.
The operation in lifting a stump, rock or pole is as follows: Suppose the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 the operator presses down upon the long arm of the lever using the left pin as shown in said figure as a fulcrum. As soon as the lever has been pressed down far enough so that the short arm of the lever has passed above the hole designated specifically as a the right pin as seen in Fig. 1 is removed and is placed in hole a, said pin being then used as a fulcrum and lifting power applied to the long arm of the lever. As soon as the notch at the left as seen in Fig. 1 has been raised above the hole specifically indicated by b the left pin is withdrawnand placed in said hole, this pin being then used as a fulcru in and the long arm of the lever pressed down again, these operations being repeated until the stump, rock or pole is lifted as much as maybe required. It will of course be apparent that the parts are made of a size and strength dependent upon the work for which they are required, and where great power is required the lever is increased in length relatively to the size indicated in Fig. 1.
