Description
'AIU
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM KIMMEL AND DANIEL KIMMEL, OF CAMBRIDGE CITY, INDIANA.
STUMP-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,603, dated August 14, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM KruMEL and DANIEL KIMMEL, both of Cambridge City, Vayne county, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stump-Puller; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The subject of the said invention is a certain combination and arrangement of capstan, lever and movable roller for the purpose of applying a strong force for the starting of the stump and a more rapid movement to complete its extraction as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a vertical section of a stump extractor embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detached portion of the same.
A is a portable frame in which the lifting devices are arranged. It is allowed to rest solidly upon the ground as shown when the machine is in action, but has commonly attached a set of wheels and casters on which it is mounted by suitable levers, for easy locomotion. A capstan B with two rope or chain attachments a a is journaled in the frame, as shown, the ropes or chains passing from the ca-pstan over rollers C, C, for connection with the hoisting lever D. Loose bearers E, E, are supported on the frame, and carry the adjustable fulcrum brackets F F. The bearers E, E can be adjusted in width apart to suit different kinds of work. Two pins c c are loosely fitted to the holes of the brackets F, F. The connection from the tree to be uprooted, to the hoisting lever D is made at e between brackets F F. In operating the capstan is applied to alternate ends of the lever D, and a fulcrum pin e to alternate brackets F F. The raising of lever D on either side gives space for the insertion of pins c at a higher point, so that by the application of the capstan to the hoisting of the lever at alternate ends, and the successive elevation of the fulcrum pin 0 in the brackets F F, a long ranoe of vertical motion, is given to the lever for lifting purposes.
The principal use of the lever D is to start the larger stumps for which purpose the rollers C are applied in open bearings g, at the extremities of the frame as shown. When greater speed and less power are required, the bearers E E', brackets F F and lever D are removed and one of the rollers C applied in the central bearings G, a rope or chain being attached directly from the .capstan to the stump to be uprooted (see red lines Fig. l).
An arm or sweep H is attached to the capstan, as shown, for the attachment of the motive power.
IVe claim as new and of our invention- The combination and arrangement of the capstan B, lever D and shiftable roller C; for applying the power at `diiferent speeds substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention, we hereunto set our hands.
WILLIAM KIMMEL. DANIEL KIMMEL.
Vitnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES M. COCKEEAIR.
