As shown more clearly'in' Figures 1; 2 and- 4', the bifurcated flanges=34 and.-.36::are provided with a pluralityof appropriately spaced pairs' of alignd bores 52 extending through both the upper and lower horizontal flanges 34 and 36, and which are adapted to be selectively aligned with an aperture or bore 54 in the arm 40. A fastening means comprising a pin 56 whose lower end is screw threaded to engage the correspondingly threaded bore of the lower flange, is provided with a headed portion 58 to which is attached a handle 68 whereby the pin may be selectively engaged with the above mentioned bores in order to secure each of the arms 49 in a predetermined angular relation to the adjusting rod 24. Obviously, the fastening pin 54 may be omitted, whereupon the arms are free to oscillate about their pivot points 36 as oocasioned by the bending of the pipe 50.
Attention is now directed more specifically to Figures 1 and 6 for an understanding of the pipe bending jaw which is detachably secured upon the reduced extension 26 of the adjusting rod 24.
The bending jaw preferably consists of a unitary block 62 having a socket or bore 64 adapted to loosely receive the reduced extension 26 of the adjusting rod 24. Opposite the bore 64, the block 62 is provided with a concave surface 66, Figure 3, adapted to circumferentially engage the surface of the pipe 59 for applying pressure thereto. Within the concave surface 66, is disposed an intermediate zone in the form of a convex surface 63, Figure 6, adapted to engage the longitudinal surface of the pipe 58 and struck upon such a radius as will conveniently support and engage the pipe 50 as the latter is being bent in the position shown in Figure 1. It will thus be seen that the block 62 engages and supports the pipe 50 at circumferentially spaced points thereon, to distribute the strain of bending more evenly over the circumference of the pipe, and the convex surface 68 constitutes a guide or die limiting the radius about which the pipe is bent, to thereby prevent rupturing or straining of the pipe.
In order to detachably mount the block 62 upon the reduced extension 26, and thereby permit the selective use of other similar blocks but having different proportions of the concave and convex surfaces, the reduced extension 26 is provided with a recess or annular channel 10, positioned within the bore 64 as shown in Figure 6, and which channel is adapted to be engaged by a plurality of set screws 12, or the like, extending through the block 62 and loosely received within said channel. These set screws retain the blocks upon the reduced end 26, but permit a swivelling movement, of the block thereon, such as is necessary to permit the block to accommodate itself to slight mis-alignments of the pipe 50 with the tool.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the mode of operating the device will now be apparent. The head plate 29 may be either mounted in the support base it), or in any other suitable support, and a pipe 59 disposed within the two pipe receiving jaws 46. The pipe bending jaw 62 is now applied to the reduced end 26 of the bending screw 24, and by rotation of the handle 32, the screw is driven inwardly of the head plate 20 and pressure applied by means of the jaw 62 to the pipe 53 intermediate the portions received by the C-shaped jaws 46. As continued pressure is applied, obviously the pipe 58 will be bent in the manner indicated in Figure 1, and if the fastening means 551 have been omitted, the arms 40 supporting the jaws 46 will freely oscillate and distribute the strain to the best advantage throughout the device. When, however, one or both of the arms 40 are locked in predetermined position between the flanges 34 and 36 by means of the fastening means 54, the travel of the bending jaw 62 will still result in bending the pipe, the C-shaped jaws 46 now swivelling upon the ends of the fixed arms 40.
Obviously, various modifications of the invention may be resorted to and consequently it is not desired to limit the protection sought to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modification and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A pipe bending device including a head plate, means for pivotally supporting said head plate, laterally extending bifurcated flanges on said head plate, a pair of pipe receiving jaws pivoted between said flanges and a pipe bending jaw linearly adjustable on said head plate, said pipe receiving jaws comprising C-shaped clamps, arms pivoted to said clamps and to said flanges at their extremities, and fastening means for securing said arms to both said flanges in pivotally adjusted position, said last means including a plurality of alined bores in said flanges, apertures in said arms and means selectively engaging said apertures and said alined bores.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein said alined bores are displaced progressively greater distances from an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said pipe bending jaw as they are displaced from the latter axis.
3. A pipe bending device including a head plate, means for pivotally supporting said head plate, laterally extending flanges on said head plate, a pair of pipe receiving jaws pivoted on said flanges and a pipe bending jaw linearly adjustable on said head plate, said pipe receiving jaws comprising C-shaped clamps, arms pivoted to said clamps and to said flanges at their extremities, and fastening means for securing said arms to said flanges in pivotally adjusted position, said last means including a plurality of bores displaced progressively greater distances from an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said pipe bending jaw as they are displaced from the latter axis, apertures in said arms and means selectively engaging said apertures and said bores.
