Application filed August 14, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Missouri City, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Straightening Device for Rails, Axles. and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a straightening device for rails, axles and the like and has more particular reference to a hand operated device whereby all forms of metal bars may be straightened, or if desired curved.
The primary object of the invention residing in the provision of a device of this character that may be readily applied or removed from the article to be straightened or curved.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which comprises a main substantially U-shaped member the spaced legs of which are hooked at their front ends for engagement with the article to be straightened and to which are pivoted other arms that are also hooked at their free ends for engagement over the opposite edge of the article being worked upon for thereby providing a highly efficient means for securing the device to the article and for preventing its displacement from the article during the operation of the device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is better understood the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a straightening device constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, a portion of the pivoted arm shown, being in cross section for more clearly disclosing the pivotal connection between the arm and the main substantially U-shaped member of the device.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel straightening device constitutes the provision of a main relatively U-shaped member 5 of suitable metal preferably cast iron, the same comprising spaced parallel arms 6 and a horizontal connecting Serial No. 732,001.
bar 7. Said arms 6 being slightly offset adjacent their front ends as more clearly shown in Figure 2 and being formed at these front ends with laterally extending feet 8 that are adapted to engage the lower edge of the rail or axle A being straightened.
Intermediate the ends of the horizontal bar portion 7 of said U-shaped member 5 is an enlargement 9 through which extends a threaded opening and in which is threaded a. relatively elongated bolt 10 the inner end of which is provided with a head 11 that carries a removable cross bar 12 that serves the purpose of a handle for turning said bolt within the threaded opening of the cross bar of the member 5. Said head 11 is formed upon its forward end with a circumferentially grooved stud 13 with which is removably associated through the medium of a set screw 1% a rail or axle engaging member 15 formed with a sharpened point 16 it being obvious that when the bolt 10 is turned through the medium of a handle 12 said member 15 will during the turning of the bolt in one direction engage the axle or rail and bend the same as desired.
For maintaining the device in position upon the rail or axle for preventing any lateral movement of the device while in operation arms 1717 are provided, the rear ends of which are formed with one or more openings 18 through which extend suitable loop members 19 carried by the main U- shaped member 5, it being obvious that these arms which are seated at their forward ends at 19 for engagement over the upper edge of the rail or axle may be swung upon their pivot connection with the U-shaped member in the attaching or detaching of the device from the article being worked upon.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel and efficient form of bending device and one that will, I believe, meet all the requirements for a successful commercial use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A straightening device of the character described including a relatively U-shaped member comprising an intermediate portion and a pair of leg portions extending therefrom, the free ends of the leg portions being hooked for engagement with the article being worked upon, means operable through the intermediate portion of the member and cooperating with the hooked ends of the leg portions thereof for straightening the article, pins extending through the member adjacent the juncture of the leg portions with the intermediate portion and terminating in eyes, and arms engaged with the said eyes for swinging movement adjacent the leg portions and terminatingi-n hooked ends for engagement with the article being worked upon, whereby the 'U-shaped member is secured against movement during the operation of the device.
Tn testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN W. TEMPLE.
