The present invention relates to telephone sets and is particularly concerned with the provision of means whereby the support or mounting for a hand telephone is adapted for use either upon a desk or upon a Wall. The particular feature with which the present application concerns itself is the provision of means whereby the hand set can be made to operate the standard plunger type switch hook regardless of whether the support is mounted upon a wall or resting loosely upon a desk or table. Itis a principal purpose of our invention to provide a device of this character wherein the telephone set is readily applicable to a wall or desk mounting and is readily accessible for maintenance with a minimum amount of change in the standard construction.

More particularly it is a purpose of our invention to provide a telephone set wherein the support has a modied cradle including means for effecting depression of the switch hook plungers by placing the hand set in the cradle regardless of Whether the plungers extend vertically or horizontally.

The features and advantages of the present invention will appear more fully as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred form of the invention is shown. It is to be understood however that the drawings and description are illustrative only and are not to be taken as limiting the invention except insofar as it is limited by the claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the main form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 embodies a base I0 and a cover I I of a telephone' support which contains the usual ringing andv switch equipment, etc. for a telephone hand set indicated in section at I2. The details of the telephone hand set form no part of the present' According to our invention we provide means whereby the base III may be mounted upon a wall as well as used upon the flat surface of a desk or table. In order to accomplish this result we provide the base III with resilient feet I4. These feet are held in place by hollow rivets I5 which are also utilized as a means of mounting the support on a wall. As shown in Fig. 2, the base III can be mounted upon the wall by utilizing ordinary wood screws I6 extending through the openings in the hollow rivets I5.

It is necessary for the hand set to actuate the switch hook plungers of the telephone set regardless of whether the device is placed on a table or on a wall. In order to eiiect this operation we provide the cradle portion of the cover II with apertures I1 through which the switch hook plungers I8 extend. We then form the cradle with one pair of short projections I9 on the side toward the dial I3 and on the other side of the cradle we provide elongated hook projections 20 which are turned over at the ends as indicated at 2|. We also bevel the end faces of the switch hook plungers as indicated at Ia. This facilitates the depression of the plunger when the hand set is pushed across the plungers in Fig. 2.

By comparing Figs. 1 and 2 it will be evident how the hand set I2 can be used to depress the plungers I8 regardless of whether the support is in the position shown in Fig. 1 or in the position shown in Fig. 2. The plungers I8 are spaced far enough from the projections 20 so that the hand set must depress the plungers I8 and have its widest portion below the tips of the plungers when the hand set is in its resting position. It is evident from Fig. 1 that the projections 20 do not interfere with the deposit, or removal of the hand set when the telephone set is on a desk. The only necessary changes to adapt this telephone set to a wall mounting after it has been used as a desk set are to fasten the base I0 to a wall by means of the screws I6 and then turn 3 the dial I3 around so that the dial indications read right side up again.

Figs. 1 and 3 illustrate the means provided for securing the cover I I when it is desired to obtain access to the interior parts of the set. This means comprises a strip 22 of webbing or the like. One end of the strip is fastened to a struck up bridge portion 23 of the base I0. The other end of the strip is fastened to the interior of the cover II by some suitable means such as screws 243. The webbing 22 is of suicient length to enable the cover II to assume the position shown in Fig.. 3 when it is removed from the base IIJ. Any suitable means may be utilized to secure the cover I I on the base I9 for ready removal. The means indicated in the drawings comprise -a series of screws 26 passing through the wall of the cover and threaded into the annular wall of the base l0.

Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, in this form of the invention the rigid Supporting projections are removed and a plate 27 is hinged to the cradle portion of the cover I I by means of a, hinge pin 28. This plate 2 1 extends across the cradle so as to rest upon the hook switch plungers I8, the cradle being hollowed out to receive the plate as indicated at 29 in Fig, 4. The plate 27 is angular in shape with a turned up lip 3l) at its free edge. The manner in which it is utilized is believed to be sufficiently clear. When the telephone s et is being used on a desk the Weight ofthe hand set I2 is directly over the plungers I8 so as to cause the plate to depress them. When the device is mounted on a wall so as to take the position shown in Fig. 5 the weight of the vhand set I2 acts to force the plungers laterally as shown. The hook portion 30 of the plate 2l secures the hand set against accidental displacement.

Referring now to the form of device shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, this form of the device the universal operation of the hand set rest and the hand set for depressing the plungers I3 is accomplished by providing a cover l! with short projections 3l and 32 to guide the hand set I2. We then provide a plate 33 which is hinged in depressions 34 provided in the cover II and which is provided with recesses 35 for the plungers I8. The plate 33 has a lip portion 36, set at an angle to the main body portion and extending into a recess 37 provided in the cover I I. When the telephone set is mounted on a wall the plate 33 can be swung out to the position shown in Fig. 7 where it will act as a rest for the hand set I2 and cause the hand set I2 to move the plungers I8 inward. The outward force of the plungers merely presses the hand set I2 downwardly and outwardly against the lip 3B.

In Figs. 9 and l0 the form of device shown is essentially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 except that in this case the forward projection I9 is elongated and curved away from the other projection 20' so as to provide additional protection against accidental dislodging of the hand set l2. 'Ihe function of the construction shown in Fig. 9 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3. The only change required when the desk set is converted to a wall set is the fastening of the base I 9 on the wall and the turning around of the dial.

From the foregoing description it is believed that the nature and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Lettersl Patent is:

1. A support for a hand telephone, for desk or wall mounting, comprising a base, a cover and a cradle, the cradle being of integral structure and forming two permanently operatively available seats for said hand telephone, one of said seats being parallel to the base and having a switch hook plunger opening therein, a switch hook plunger having an angular end, extending in a plane which intersects the plane of the other seat, the other seat being substantially vertical to the base adjacent a marginal edge of said first mentioned seat and the axially longest portion of the plunger being adjacent the said other seat to facilitate actuation of the plunger by wedging action of a hand telephone against the angular end as the hand telephone is seated on the seat vertical to the base.

2. A support for a hand telephone for desk or wall mounting comprising a base, a cover and a cradle, the cradle being of integral structure and forming a rst and second permanently available seat for said hand telephone, said rst seat being parallel to the base and said second seat being substantially vertical to the base, a switch hook plunger movably mounted in said first seat with its free end tending to project therefrom, the axis of said switch hook plunger extending transversally off-center of said first seat to dispose such plunger relatively considerably spaced from one marginal edge of said first seat and relatively close to the plane of said second seat and parallel therewith, the free end of said switch hook plunger being angularly shaped andthe axially longest portion of said plunger being adjacent said second seat to facilitate actuation of the plunger by wedging action of a hand telephone against the angular end as the hand telef phone is seated on the seat vertical to the base.

3. The structure as set forth in claim 2, wherein said cradle forms two extensions of substantially identical length, said extensions projecting from opposite marginal edges of the one of said seats which is parallel to the base, one of said extensions forming the other seat which is substantially Vertical to the base.
