UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER G. CRAWFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. "55., ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TELEPHONE SET.
Original application filed April 24, 1917, Serial No. 164,160. Divided and this application filed May 23,
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I. lVAL'rnn G. GnAwronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Sets, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to telephone sets for use at the subscribers stations of telephone exchange systems and is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 164,160, filed April 24, 1917, which became Patent No. 1,337,692, April 20, 1920. More particularly, the present invention relates to the construction of a telephone set whereby it may not only be easily mounted in position but also arranged so that the wiring and various pieces of apparatus are easily accessible for inspection or rearrangement of parts.
In various telephone systems, particularly those of the so-called intercommunicating type, telephone sets having slightly different circuit connections and different arrangements of apparatus are required at the different stations. In order not to necessitate the carrying of a stock of sets of each particular type it is customary to stock only certain types and modify these types to meet the various conditions. It is therefore desirable that the sets be so arranged that the interior is readily accessible for making the necessary changes in wiring as well as for testing and inspection purposes.
The object of the present invention is to provide a telephone set having a mounting plate which will facilitate the installation of the set and the making of any repairs or changes in the wiring when necessary, and moreover a set in which the construction is simple and cheap to manufacture.
To attain this object, a feature of the invention resides in providing a mounting plate having suitable projections which will permit the ready installation of the set and also having means for supporting the housing when it is removed in order to permit access to the interior wiring and the various pieces of apparatus involved. This and other features of the invention may be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a mounting plate embodying this in- Serial No. 299,154.
vention with its accompanying housing mounted in place; Fig. 2 is a rear View in perspective of the housing; Fig. 3 a perspective view of the mounting plate; and Fig. lis a sectional view of a portion of the mountmg plate of Fig. 3 having the housing for the set supported thereon in a position which permits access to the apparatus and wiring.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a mounting plate 5 which is adapted to be secured to the wall by means of screws passing through the mounting holes 6. An opening 7 is provided through which to bring the wiring for the set, and recessed portions 8-8 are also provided at the top and bottom of the plate as alternative openlugs for the wiring. The lower portion of the plate is formed as shown to provide brackets 9-9 each of which is provided with an opening or slot 10. On the lower part of the housing 11 are the lugs 12-12 of suitable dimensions to engage the slots 10 and to serve as a support for the housing 11 while the connections are being made to the interior wiring or changes in the apparatus itself. As a means for securing the Patented Feb. 15, 1 921.
housing to the mounting plate, right-angled brackets 13-13 are formed in the latter, these being provided with threaded holes 14-1 1 adapted to be engaged by the screws 15-15 passing through the sides of the housing 11. These screws are provided with split washers 16 to prevent their falling out when not in use. A U-shaped guide 17 is provided to position the wiring of the set which is preferably run in cable form. For the sake of clcarness, this wiring is not shown in the drawing.
\Vhen the housing 11 mounted upon the back board 5 it is held in place by the screws 15 which engage the threaded openings 14. in the brackets13-13 of the mounting plate and the lugs 12-12 are out of engagement with the slots 10-10. Upon removing the screws 141-1 1, the housing 11 may be moved forward and entirely free of the mounting plate 5, or it may be given a rotating motion allowing the lugs 12 to engage the slots 10 is supported directly on the mounting plate there is little likelihood of the housing being misplaced or lost.
What is claimed is:
1. In a telephone set, a housing, a mounting plate, an engaging member on said housing, and a corresponding engaging member on said plate, said members being out of engagement ,when the housing is mounted upon the plate, but adapted to engage each other to support said housing in an open position. i
2. In a telephone set, a housing provided with supporting lugs, and a mounting plate having a bracket equipped with slots adapted to engage said lugs to support the housing in an open position, said lugs being out of engagement with the slots when in a closed position, and additional bracket members adapted to support the housing in a closed position.
3. In a telephone set, a housing provided with supporting lugs, and a mounting plate having a bracket equipped with slots adapted to engage said lugs to support the housing in an open position, said lugs being so an ranged-as not to engage the slots with the housing when in a closed position.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 19th day of May A. 1)., 1919.
WVALTER G. CRAWFORD.
