PEN-HLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pa.teni No. 249,230, dated November 8, 1881.
ing is e speeifieation.
'lhis invention is more especially.designed for use with gold pens, so termed; and its object is to prevent injury to the point of the pen in case the letter is dropped or otherwise roughly used.
T0 this endthe invention exnhraes eertain novel combinations of parts, whereby the desired object is effeetually aeoomplished.
Figure 1 is a side view of a. pen and bolder, inoluding my said invenbi0n; and Fig. 2 is a top view with a portion removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudinal seetional views of the same in planes i: right angles to eaeh other.
A is the pen, made preferahly of gold, end of intrinsic value and good workmanship, and attached by anysuitable meansas, for ex ample, a curved slot formed to receive the i11- ner end or shankof the pen-to the onter end of a cylindrical slide, B, whieh is plaeed within a oylindrieal bolder, O. Extended from the inner end of this slide B to-the opposite or ouler end of the holder 0 is a spiral spring, D, which tends t0 draw inward the slide and consequently the pen. The opposite or outer end of the slide is elongated, as shown als al, and oonstrueted to receive tl1e pen, as hereinhefore indieated. The slide has formed in il; a longitudinal slot, a and formed in the bolder is u slot,b, ooincident in positin with the slot a.
-Pivoted in suitable proxirnity to the slots a and 11 is a semihylindrioal leaf, E, which is external to the holder, and is provided with a narrow longitudinal tongue, 0, on its inner side, whioh snid tongue projeots throngh the slot 1) in the holder into and thrcugh the slot; en of the slide. lhis tongue 0 is so shiped at; its o uter and under side as to constitnte a aam, Which heers against the outennost end of the slot 0! in the slide in such marmer tliat when pressed inward radially into the slot en the said tongue will force the slide longitudinally outward, and when released flom said inward movementwillpermil: the spiral spring Application filed Mnich 22, 1881. (No model.)
toretraet the slide longitudinallyin a.n opposte directon.
Aifixed to the end of the helder adjacent to the pen is a guard, F, which projeets forward and parallel with the pen over th same, end
somewhatsay one-eighth of en inch-beyond the tip or point of the pen when the letter is retracted by the inward mo"enent of the slide. The eamlike sh2ppe of the tongue of the leef is si1eh 21s not only to enable the inward movementof the leaf to project theslide, and 0011 seqnently the pen, in a forward direetion, bui; conversely, so as also to enable the slide, when retraoted by the spring, to push ontward the tongne and leafin a radial direetion when the latter is relieved from pressnre.
In the use -and operation of the invention, the holder is grasped in the same wanner as the commonpenholder is held :for writing, except that the forefinger or thunnb is placed on the leaf and presses the same radielly inward, as hereinbefore set forth. This projects forward the slide until the pen is bronghi:
with its tip or point suffieiently beyond the extremity of the guard to enable the pen to be nsed for writing without hinderanee, this portion of the pen being maintained by the constan; pressnre of the forefinger or thumb upon the leaf dnring the operation of writing. As soon, however, as the forefinger or thunnb is removed from the leaf as, for example, when the irnplement is aeeidentally dropped to the floor, 0r when it; is laid aside pending further use, or when it is smply plaeed in the pooketthe spring retraets the slide until the pen is brought wholly within the guard, so that the extremity of the letter, projeeting beyond the point of the pen,-effeetually proteets the pen from injury. It; is to be observed that, inasmuch as the shield is located only at the back of the pen instead of snrrounding the same, a very slight movement-say from one-eighth to three-sixteenths of en inch-is suffieient to project the letter a. distance snffieient; to permit its use in writing.
NVhat I claim as m y invention s- --1. The combinaoion of the hollow bolder 0, a guard on said bolder arranged to project over the pen, the slide B, constructed to earry the pen A, and the pvoted leef E,connected with placed t0 projectfrom the bolder over theback 10 the slide by mechansm, substantially as deof the pen and substantially parallel therascrbed, t0 gve movement 130 the sad.slide with, all substantally as and fox the purpose with reference to the guard, substantially 21s heren set forth. and fox the purpose herein set; forth.
2. The combination of the retractle pen A, attached to the slotted slde B, the slotted Wtnesses: bolder O,the spring D, tl1e pvoted leaf E,hav- ROBERT W. MAT'1HEWS, ing the cam-like tongue 0, and the guard F, THOMAS E. ROSSMAN.
