4 Claims. (Cl. 87-8) This invention relates to a two-legged braided sling and is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 592,241, filed May 5, 1945, now Patent No. 2,448,463, dated August 31, 1948.
Two-legged braided slings are well known, but those made prior to my invention were not sumciently flexible and the maximum strength was not obtained from the ropes used therein. In addition to these characteristics, it is desirable that gether to form double splices 4. Before the braiding operation, the eight parts of rope are laid in parallel around the pin 2 and in braiding care is taken that both legs are braided from the same position. The eight parallel ropes around pin 2 are served together by means of a seven wire strand 8 and a thimble 30 is inserted in the eye 32 and strips of steel 34 are welded to the thimble to prevent it from falling out. It will be seen the sling should lay dead. that the completed sling consists of an eye por- It is therefore an object of my invention to protion 32 formed of four left and four right lay vide a two-legged sling having these desired charropes and a body portion having two legs 36, 38, acteristics. each of said legs being formed of two pairs of This and other objects will be more apparent substantially parallel right lay ropes and two pairs after referring to the following specification and 1 5 of substantially parallel left lay ropes braided toattached drawings, in which: gether, and an eye portion 40 at the end of each Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the leg. Each eye portion 40 is formed of two left position of the strands prior to braiding the sling; and two right lay ropes which are spliced and Figure 2 shows a braided sling assembled with either served with wire 42 or provided with a the splice formed in the endless units; no thimble similar to thimble 30.

A two-legged sling comprising an eye portion sisting of two right and two left lay ropes. The and a body portion extending from the eye porgroups are arranged around pin 2 in a substantial tion in two legs, the body portion in each leg be- V-shape as shown in Figure 1. Only one pin is ing formed of two pairs of substantially parallel actually used, but for the sake of clarity two are right lay ropes and two pairs of substantially shown. In braiding, one operator takes left lay parallel left lay ropes braided together, said ropes H and i2 in his left hand and right lay braiding being maintained in one direction ropes H and IS in his right hand and the other throughout, the eye portion being formed of four operator takes right lay ropes l5 and [5 in his left left and four right lay ropes. hand and left lay ropes l3 and M in his right 2.
