PAMPHLET-COVER ROLLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,074, dated November 1, 1881.

Application filed May 31, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA L. MILLER, of the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Pamphlet-Cover Roller; and I do declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improvement for [0 pressing the covers, after being pasted, to

pamplets.

The invention consists in providing two rollers and securing them at right angles in a suitable frame. One of said rollers is made to project beyond the other to any required distance for the purpose of bringing the two faces of the rolling-surfaces in contact with the edge and side of the work to be done, one of said rollers being made adjustable to suit the width of work.

In pasting covers to pamphlets the edges and a portion of the sides of the pamphlet are at first provided with paste, after which the coveris applied, and the portion which is pasted is rubbed down by the thumb and finger in close contact with the pamphlet. In consequence of the repeated application of this method of pasting the covers to the pamphlets the thumb and forefinger become very o sore and unfit for use. Now to obviate this I employ the device shown in the drawings, in which Figuie 1 represents asectional view cutting through the two rollers D and C and frame A.

5 G is a spindle or bolt provided with a head at its lower end, and a shoulder on which the washer J rests. It continues through the adjusting-screw E and is tightened by the nut F, while the roller C is left free to revolve.

roller is left free to rotate. K represents a pamphlet with a cover thereon to be pasted down.

Fig. 2 represents an external view of my device ready for operation, which is as follows: The operator takes hold of the handle B and places the two rolls C and D in contact with the edge of the pamphlet and its upper side. Then, with the required pressure, the instrument is moved back and forth until the surface of the cover is properly smoothed and pasted to the pamphlet, after which the pamphlet is turned over and a like operation is performed upon the other side. Roller D is made slightly beveling toward its outer end, so as to not crease the cover while being rolled over the surface. Roller C should not project far enough to touch the table on which the work is done, but it should extend two-thirds or three-fourths of the distance across the surface of the edge of the pamphlet. Screw E will permit of the proper adjustment for pamphlets of any thickness.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. As a new article of manufacture, a device for attaching covers to books, pamphlets, 800., after the application of paste thereto, which consists of two rollers, one arranged at right angles to the other, and both supported within a suitable frame, substantially as described.

2. In a device for pressing and attaching covers to books, pamphlets, 850., the combination of a frame-work with two rollers supported therein, each roller being arranged at right angles to the other, and one roller being made adjustable to suit the width of book or pamphlet on the edge, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
