This invention relates to furniture and more particularly to furniture used in the home, and specifically to a combination crib or bed for small children, and a wardrobe or chest of drawers.

Increasing attention is being given to space saving in the production of furniture, brought about by various circumstances including areas becoming more thickly populated, the necessity for families to use reduced space upon moving to more thickly populated localities, and the combining of families to cope with housing conditions. compactness is desirable due to the fact that apartments and living quarters of the present era frequently are relatively small.- As available space is used it becomes desirable or necessary to reduce the bulkiness of furniture. Cribs-or baby beds and wardrobes or chests of drawers have been produced as separate items, although for convenience these cribs or baby beds have been made so that the mattress on which the child lay was at a substantial height from the floor, leaving substantial unused space beneath the crib or bed. This was satisfactory when it was convenient to provide a child with a separate room, a crib, and a bedwith or without other furniture. However when it became necessary for the child and its parents, and perhaps other members of the family to occupy the same room, space was not sufficient to accommodate all the furniture needed.

Cribs or baby beds have been produced with drawers for storage beneath them. However, these have been found impractical since they do not preserve the individual utility of each. In other words, combination cribs and wardrobes are so constructed that the side that could be lowered and raised interfered with the drawers and further, they were constructed so that they were impractical for shipment due to their massiveness or clumsiness, it being necessary to'provide a crate sufficient to contain the article in its assembled condition. In this assembled condition in a crate not only was bulkiness an objectionable factor but the crib or bed was too fragile frequently to withstand the rough handling to which articles are normally subjected in shipment.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a combination crib wardrobe of simple, inexpensive, light-weight, substantial, durable and easily movable construction, having a side rail operable independently of storage compartments or drawers, which is capable of being compactly collapsed and crated or packaged for shipping, which can be readily and easily assembled for use, and which incorporates the most Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following descrip tion taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

With continued reference to the drawings, the combination crib and wardrobe of the present invention includes a chassis or frame consisting of front, rear, end and intermediate portions forming a framework for slidable drawers. The front consists of upper and lower longitudinal members or rails in and i l respectively, and posts i2 and I3, and an intermediate post M. The rear portion consists of upper and lower rails l5 and I6 end posts I! and It, and intermediate posts is with a back panel 20 of a length corresponding to the length of the upper and lower rails or supports and of a height corresponding to the height of the several posts.

The top longitudinal rail or support ill rests flat upon the upper ends of the posts i2, i3 and M while the inner lower ends of the posts l2 and i3 are provided with notches or cut-out portions Zland 22 of right angular configuration for receiving and accommodating the ends of the lower longitudinal member ll, upon the central portion of which the post I4 rests. The upper and lower longitudinal supports may be fastened to the upright posts by screws 23, glue or both or other fastening means. The rear longitudinal members 15 and I6 and the supporting posts 11, I 8 and I9 may be fastened together by fastening means in like manner and the panel 20 may be attached similarly.

The front and rear portions of the device are held in spaced relation by upper and lower members 24, intermediate lower spacing members 25, and an intermediate upper spacing member 26.

The end members 24 are provided with integral ledges 21 which cooperate with corresponding ledges 28 on the lower intermediate members and serve as supports for drawers 29, of which as shown in the present invention there are four in number. The upper intermediate member 26 extends between the front and rear longitudinal members l and I5, and with the extremities of such member resting upon the upper ends of the posts I4 and I9 and held in place by any desired fastening means as for example by screws 23, with or without adhesive, or by other means.

The end members 24, as shown in Fig. 6, are provided with extensions 30 which flt into slots 3| in the front members or posts l2 and I3, and into slots 32 in the rear members or posts H. In like manner the intermediate members 25 are joined to the front and rear posts or members l4 and I9. Only a small amount of weight is received by the 1

24 and 25 and conseduently it is not necessary to have a very sturdy joint although the mean portions of the ends of the members abutting the upright posts assist in giving rigidity to the structure.

The corner posts l2, l3, l1 and I8 are, provided with

The crib ends have intermediate inset portions which expose the adjacent inner side surfaces of the posts between which the chassis or frame of the bed is secured by fastening elements extending into the posts of the bed through the

33, 34, 35 and 36. This provides a rigid construction, and the front and rear rails or side members afford added rigidity. The rear side member 39 is fastened by angle brackets 46 to the opposed

42 and 44 of the ends of the bed, while the front side 40 has its ends provided with

41 and 48 in which are received uprights or bars 49 having brackets 50 and at their upper and lower ends respectively, attached to the opposed end posts 4| and 43. Springs 52 may be located around the lower ends of the rods or bars to form a cushion for the front side of the crib when it is lowered.

From the foregoing it will be readily understood that an improved combination crib-wardrobe is provided having numerous advantages over those previously produced, including a removable individual or independent chassis for the wardrobe which in and of itself provides a support for the mattress and is in turn supported in spaced relation to the floor by the ends of the bed. Furthermore, the drawers or storage space of the frame occupies a normally unused portion of the device and does not interfere with the operation of the drop side or rail which is readily lowerable for affording easy access to the crib, or may be easily raised for confining a small child therein.

There is also provided a substantially flat crib spring or bottom 53 which is supported or suspended in an angle iron frame 54. The frame 54 is adapted to rest upon the aforementioned chassis or frame member which houses the drawers 29. The top rails Ill and I5 of said chassis are provided with notches 55 in which the angle iron frame 54 of the spring 53 is adapted to seat. A

mattress 59 is adapted to be supported upon the spring 53 in conventional manner.

Modified means of attaching the wardrobe chassis to the end members may be used, for example, the corner post of said chassis l2 could be divided in two parts longitudinally as illustrated in Fig. 7, saidparts being indicated as |2c and l2b. The part |2a will be secured to the supporting member 4| of the end section 3'! by the previously mentioned attaching means through the holes 33. The section |2b will receive the upper and lower rails I9 and II, as previously described. The part I 2b has contained there in a plate 57 which is secured to said section by pins 58, said plate 51 being adapted to be located in the opening 59. The plate 51 has at its outermost and exposed extremities hook-like portions adapted to be fitted over and locked to the pins 69 of the part |2a,6sluch pins 60 being located within the openmg It will be apparent that this method of attaching the wardrobe section to the upstanding end sections of said crib provides simple, instantaneous and positive attaching and locking means due to the weight of the wardrobe section on the pins 60.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indi cated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A combination crib-wardrobe comprising a rectangular frame defining an individual unit with storage compartments, drawers removably slidable in said compartments, a crib spring constructed and arranged to be supported upon the top of said unit, means for supporting said frame in spaced relation to the floor on which the device is positioned, said means comprising solid crib ends including corner posts, the spacing of said posts being sufficient to snugly receive therebetween the ends of said rectangular frame, means for securing said frame to said posts, crib sides connecting said ends, means slidably mounting one of said crib sides upon an opposed pair of said corner posts for movement substantially within the lateral limits of said crib ends, and means for fastening said crib side at a fixed elevation.

2. A combination crib-wardrobe comprising a frame defining a unit provided with storage compartments, drawers removably slidable in said compartments, a crib spring supported above said unit, means for supporting said frame in spaced relation to the floor on which the device is positioned, said means comprising crib ends including corner posts, the spacing of said posts being sufiicient to snugly receive the ends of said frame therebetween, means for securing said frame to said posts, crib sides connecting said ends, and means slidably mounting one of said crib sides upon an opposed pair of said corner posts for movement substantially within the lateral limits of said crib ends whereby said crib side may be lowered to prevent access to said drawers.

3. A combination crib-wardrobe comprising a frame with storage compartments, means for supporting said frame in spaced relation to a floor on which the device is positioned, said means comprising crib ends each including corner posts spaced to snugly receive said frame therebetween,
