PICHT BED UTILITY DRAWER AND SHELF 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Sept. 50, 1958 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Va 7" n a L.Pichi United States Patent 2,954,568 BED UTILITY DRAWER AND SHELF Verna L. Picht, 1608 4th Ave., Sacramento, Calif. Filed Sept. 30, 1958, Ser. No. 764,313 '1 Claim. (Cl. -308) This invention relates to a combination drawer and utility shelf, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character designed primarily for installation on cribs and childrens hospital beds or in pediatric wards of general hospitals.
An important object of the invention is to provide a drawer which may be readily installed on bed frames or incorporated as a part of a bed structure during manufacture of the bed, the drawer providing a practical and convenient storage place for articles such as blankets, books, toys and personal belongings when not in use, and where the articles contained in the drawer will be out of the way but readily accessible for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drawer and drawer slides which may be secured on the conventional crib or bed frame in such a way that the drawer will not interfere with the operation of the usual cranks and gearing which are used to adjust the bed back and foot rest or height of the bed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a drawer of this character which may be operated from either side of the bed, the drawer being provided with a sliding cover which may be used as a shelf for convenience in handling articles from the drawer.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevational view of a bed frame constructed in accordance with the invention and supplied with the utility drawer forming the subject matter of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4- 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a bed is indicated generally by the reference character 5 and comprises a bed frame 6 including parallel side rails 7 of the angle bar type, the rails 7 being connected at their ends by means of angle bars 8.
At the ends of the bed frame are fastening members 9 that are secured around the bed posts 10, the fastening members being secured by means of bolts 11 providing a structure which may be readily and easily dismantled.
The drawer forming the subject matter of the present invention, slides on angle bars 12, the angle bars 12 being arranged transversely of the bed frame and secured to the side rails 7 of the bed frame in such spaced relation with respect to each other as to receive the drawer 13.
The reference character 14 indicates upper angle bars arranged in spaced relation with respect to each other, the angle bars 14 being connected at their ends, by means of vertical bars 15, which bars 15 together with the angle bars 12 and 14, provide a frame in which the drawer 13 moves.
Patented Oct. 4, 1960 Rollers 16 are secured to the bottom of the drawer 13, the rollers 16 operating over the flat upper surfaces of the angle bars 12 of the drawer frame.
The upper angle bars 14 are welded or otherwise secured to a metal cover 17, which is of a size to exactly fit within the open sides of the upper angle bars 14, as better shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings. This metal cover 17 affords a shelf or table for articles which are removed from the drawer, to be positioned thereon for convenience in handling and selecting certain garments or articles.
The end walls 18 of the drawer have their upper ends extended inwardly and downwardly as at 19 providing stops to prevent articles contained within the drawer from becoming wedged between the upper edge of the drawer and metal cover 17.
Handles 19 are secured to the outer surfaces of the end walls 18, and afford means for effecting operation of the drawer, the handles being accessible from either side of the bed, for convenience.
It might be further stated that the drawer and shelf are provided preferably for attachment to cribs and childrens hospital beds, although it may be desirable to incorporate the drawer construction in the initial building of the bed.
It might be also stated that the drawer is of dimensions so that it will not interfere in any way with the usual levers and gearing employed in adjusting the upper section of the bed, in the usual and well known manner.
Secured to the side rails 7 of the bed frame is a metal plate 20 providing a large shelf on which articles may be positioned when taken from the drawer .13, or positioned therein. The shelf 29 also provides a convenient storage place for blankets when removed from the bed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a utility drawer which may be constructed for attachment to the frame of the usual crib or childs hospital bed, which drawer may contain variousarticles such as blankets, pillows, books, toys and personal belongings so that they may be readily accessible, and at the same time, when not in use, will be out of the way.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
The combination with the side rails and posts of a bed frame, of a utility drawer comprising a supporting frame including spaced longitudinal side bars and transverse end bars connecting the longitudinal side bars at their ends, said longitudinal bars and transverse bars having elongated openings formed longitudinally thereof at the corners of said supporting frame, detachable fastening members having openings, fitted around the corner posts of said bed frame, and bolts extending through said openings of said fastening members and elongated openings of said supporting frame, adjustably securing said supporting frame within the bed frame, a pair of spaced channel bars extending across the longitudinal bars of said supporting frame, the open side of said channel bars being disposed inwardly, providing a supporting track, and a drawer slidably mounted within said track.
