Description

Get, 4, 1949. F. DAVlS STAIR CARPET HOLDER Filed Aug. 10, 1945 \NVENTOR S v A D D am A N U E \L K N A R E! 8 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 4, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application August 10, 1945, Serial No. 609,965 In Great Britain May 25, 1944 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires May 25, 1964 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to holders for stair carpets of the kind comprising an arm forming a holder arm adapted to engage over an edge portion of the outer surface of the carpet with the free end of the arm projecting inwardly towards the centre of the carpet, and the other arm forming a slide arm and having longitudinal edge portions adapted for slidable engagement with a bracket which is arranged for mounting on the stairs.
The present invention is particularly applicable but not restricted to holders of the kind wherein the two arms are superposed and the bracket is placed under or behind the carpet as described in prior Patent No. 2,000,259 of May '7, 1935, wherein the holder is slid into engagement with the bracket in a direction outwardly of the carpet.
In such holders it has been the practice hitherto to provide the slide arm with an extension forming an integral resilient tongue which is bent out of the plane of the slide arm rearwardly of the holder and is adapted to engage resiliently the adjacent surface of the stair riser or tread. This provision has been made to reduce the liability of the holder being accidentally displaced from the bracket and to retain it in position therein.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved means in stair carpet holders to prevent unintentional relative movement between the holder and the bracket after a holder has been placed in position.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of holder.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing one form of bracket.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan view showing the holder and bracket of Figures 1 and 2 in position.
In the construction shown in Figures 1 to 3 the bracket I is of a known form and is provided with two parallel or slightly converging guides I l for receiving the parallel or slightly converging edges !2 of a holder constructed as shown in Figure 1.
Each of the guides II is formed by slitting the metal of the bracket and pressing it outwardly into angle section.
At the bottom the bracket is provided with two integral spikes l3 which can be driven into the woodwork of the stair tread and the bracket 2 is further secured by a screw placed through the hole 14. At the centre of the lower edge the bracket is provided with a lug I5 bent at right angles to the plane of the bracket and adapted to engage the stair tread.
The holder shown in Figure 1 is provided with a holder arm l6 and with a slide arm I! which has edges l2. The edges of the slide arm I! are further provided with lugs l8 which form stops and limit the sliding motion of the slide arm in the guides II.
The arms 16 and I! are integrally connected by the portion !9 at the end and this portion is of reduced width at the position 20 to enable the edges to slide in the guides l l.
The slide arm H in slit as shown at 2| and the portion 22 between the slits is bent out of the plane of the arm I1 and is adapted to bear resiliently on the front surface of the bracket 10 so as to retain the holder firmly in position in the bracket.
What I claim then is:
A stair carpet holder comprising a bracket member adapted to be secured to the stairway, and a slide member for engaging the bracket and the carpet to retain the carpet in position, said bracket member having spaced guides said slide member having a slide arm the edges of which are adapted to engage said guides, said slide arm having a pair of spaced slits extending to its distal end, the material between the slits being bent backwardly to form an inclined projection adapted to engage the front of the bracket member between the guides.
