ADJUSTABLE FIGURE FORM. No. 248,368. Patented Oct. 18,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT .Ori rca.
CHARLES A. UFFORD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE FlGURE-FQRM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,368, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed March 7, 1881.
To all whom it may concern garments on, for which purpose it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section at the waist on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section of the skirt on the line 0 D, shown. in Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 represents the lower part of the bust on the line E F, also shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wher ever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
a is the base, from which projects upward the center post, b, that is screw-threaded in its extreme upper end, and there provided with a nut or screw-threaded handle, 0, by means of which the various parts of the figure-form are secured together after being adjusted to the desired shape.
d is a stationary support or bearing on the lower part of the center post, I), serving to support the skirt as well as the bust. The skirt is shown as being composed of four laterally'adjustable parts, a e e c. It may, however, be made divided in any number of parts, more or less than is shown in the drawings, as may be desired. Near the lower end of the skirt its laterally adjustable parts 0 e e e are provided with slotted radial arms 6 e e 0, through which the center post 11, passes loosely. Said radial arms 0 e e 0 lie one above and upon the other in the series, and the lowest one rests on the stationary support or bearing d, as, shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper ends of the laterally adjustable skirt parts 6 e a e are also provided with a series of slotted radial (No model.)
arms, e" e e e as shown in Fig. 3, through which the center post, I), also passes loosely.
fis a hollow pipe surrounding the post, b and located thereon between the uppermost of the slotted radial arms 6 e and the lowest of the slotted radial arms a e, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and said pipe is provided in its lower end with a suitable flange, nut, or collar, f and in its upper end with a flange or support, f", 'which is preferably provided with lips f' f, (shown in Figs. 2 and 3,) that serve as guides for the adjustable radial arms 6 e.
If it is desired to lengthen the waist more or less, I introduce between the top of the skirt and-the lower end of the bust a waist-block, g, preferably made of wood and of a proper thickness, according to the desired adjustment, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said waist-block 9 being provided with a slotted opening, g, (shown in Fig. 1,) to allow ofits location around thecenter post, I), or it' may to equal advantage be made for this purpose in two parts, if
so desired.
The bust is madein six parts-viz.,latera1lyadjustable front h and laterally-adj ustable back i, the laterally-adjustable sides la 70, and the vertically and laterally-adjustable shoulders I l,-
but this exact number is not material, as I may make the bust in more or less parts, as may be desired. The back and front pieces, *5 and h, have in their lower ends, respectively, slotted arms '0 and h, as shown in Fig. 5, in a similar manner and for a similar purpose as described in relation to the adjustable skirt parts 6 e e e and their slotted arms 6' and c. In their upper ends the back and front pieces, i and h, are also provided, respectively, with similar slotted arms, 2' and h. (Shown in section in Fig. 2.) 'The sides is k are also provided with lower slotted arms, is is, (shown in Figs. 2 and 5,) and upper slotted arms, 70', (shown in Fig. 2,) in a similar manner and for a similar purpose as heretofore described in relation to the adjustable skirt parts 6 e. The shoulders Z l areprovided in their upper ends with similar radial slotted arms, I 1, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) through which the center-post 1) passes, as well as through the slotted arms a, e, i, i", h, h, k, and 7c", in a similar manner and for at similar purpose, and by means of these arms the various parts of which the bust and skirt are composed can be laterally adjusted to'and from the center-post 0, according to the desired shape and size of the figure form. v
m is a pipe surroundingthe center post, b, between back and front arms, 'i h, and side arms, k k. n is a similar pipe on the post 1) between the side arms, k k, and upper side arms, k k. 0 is a similar pipe between the upper side arms, k 7d, and shoulder-arms l l, and p is a pipe or perforated washer between the shoulderarms I I and upper back and front arms, 6 h", as shown in Fig. 2, in a similar manner as the pipefon the skirt 6 e. qis an ornamented perforated neck-piece, located on the upper end of the post b between the arms h i and the nut or screw handle 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will thus be seen that all the various laterally-adjustable parts of both the skirt and the bust can be secured in their respective places by tightening the upper nut or screw handle, 0, byits action on the various slotted radial arms and intermediate pipes heletotore desmibed.
For the purpose of raising or lowering the shoulders ll, I provide them with slotted plates 'rr 1', passingdown ward beyond the upper edges of the side pieces, k to which they may be secured in place after being adjusted by means of the set-screws or screws and nuts r r 'r, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The various parts of the bust-win, h i, k k,
and l l-are made of woven-wire nettiu'g,which, afterbeingbentor molded totherequired shape, are acidized and dipped in molten tin or solder or alloy, by which a very light, portable, and indestructible bust-form is produced.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
1. In a bust-lorm,the combination of the laterally-ad j nstable side pieces, 70 k, with the verticall y and laterally adjustable shoulders ll, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a figure-torn], the adjustable waist-block g or its equivalent, interposed between the bust and the skirt, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
3. In a figure-form, the center post, b, with its stationary support or bearing (1 and nut or screw handle c,in combination with the laterally-adjustable skirt-sections e e and their radial slotted arms 0 e and hollow pipef, the laterally-adjustable bust parts h i I: k l l, with their radial slotted arms h 'h" t" i k It" I, and hollow pipes at n 0 by means of which the adjustable parts of the figure-form can be secured by manipulation of the said nut.- c, in a manner as specified.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. UFFORD.
