O.S.,SQUIRE. METAL EXTENSION LAST.
No. 24,830. Patented July 19, 1859,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OBED S. SQUIRE, OF NORTH HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,830, dated July 19, 1859*.
F0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBED S. SQUIRE, of North Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Metal Extension-Last; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents the metal last in perspective when the two halves are bolted together showing the metal strip in place for extending the same. Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the sections. Fig. 3 represents the adaptation of strips to the parts of a boot-tree.
It is found necessary in the manufacture of india-rubber boots and shoes to make them of a variety of shapes without altering their length. This has heretofore been accomplished by placing tabs on the last where the shoe is to be made larger, but great difliculty is experienced, besides the loss of time in adapting these tabs to the last and fixing them thereto, so as to give the requisite shape to the shoe when finished. These objections I obviate in a simple and efficient manner at the same time the last can be extended or narrowed according to the width of the boot or shoe to be made thereon, at the same time the length will be preserved; thus several widths of boot or shoe can be manufactured upon the same last. For this purpose the last for shoes, or boot-tree for high boots are cast in two halves or longitudinal sections A, B, one of which is shown by Fig. 2. Between these sections are placed strips of metal or other suitable material, which are-made tapering so as to give a symmetry of shape to the shoe. These strips C may be of the same width throughout and placed upon each other in thin layers until the required width is attained, or various thicknesses of strips may be prepared and only one of these used when the shoe is to be of the same width from toe to heel. hen it is necessary to extend the toe part of the shoe only, a tapering strip D, like a wedge is used, and in the same manner with the heel or instep. When these strips are thus arranged the two halves of the last are brought together and bolted by a screw bolt E, and the last thus prepared is ready for the manufacture of shoes thereon.
\Vhat- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The arrangement and combination of the longitudinal sections A, B, strips C, D, and bolt E, as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
