Description

' Nrrnn rares HILL, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NE7 YORK.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR MAKING BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110,480, dated November 3, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, S. L. HILL, of Williams` burg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Making Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiation, in which-- Figure l represents a plan or top view of my invention, a portion of the bottom of the box being broken away to expose the form. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe box when nished.
Similar letters of reference in the three views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use, in the manufacture of wooden boxes, of a form corresponding in size to the interior of the boxes to be made and provided with a series of set-screws in such a manner that the sides of the box l.can be readily held in place until the bottom is fastened to them and their edges are secured 'together by nails or in any other desirable manner.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a block of wood or any suitable material, the lower part, a, of which is equal to the outside of a box, its upper part, b, being reduced to tit into and fill completely the box when the saine is ready. The upper part or form, b, may be lined on its edges with strips of iron or steel to preserve the same against wear, and if the form is to be used for boxes, such as represented in Fig. 3, one side of which is lower than the other, a strip, c, of wood, lined with metal or of wood alone, is se cured to the shoulder on the top of the lower part or support, a, so that when the sides of the box are placed on the shoulder of the support a, their bottom edges being turned up, said bottom edges are all level or ilush and rrady to receive the bottom, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. The support a is provided with a series of brackets, c, one or more on each side, the upper ends of which project beyond the. top edge or shoulder of said support and form the bearings for thumb screws d. By means of these screws the sides of the box are-heldin place until the same are secured together.
The operation of this machine is so simple that it hardly requires any further explana tion. The sides and the bottom of the box to be made are first cut out in the desired length and width and the side pieces are adj usted on the block A and secured in position by the thumbfscrews d. The bottom is now fasten( d down by means of nails or in any other desirable manner, and afterward the sides are secured together at the corners by means ot' nails or in any other desirable manner.
By the aid of this machine wooden boxes with-mitered edges can be readily made a: d fastened at the corners by means of nails. The wood for the sides is prepared in long strips and cut to the desired lengths, the ends 0f each length being mitered in any convenient manner, and when the sides are cut accurately they can be placed 011 the block A and fastened to the bottom and to each other by means of nails without disturbing their correct position in relation to Aeach other, and a box is produced with clean sharp corners, perfectly level on top and bottom edge and even in every respect, so that no further iit.- ting or scraping is needed to render it perfect.
It must be remarked that instead of the screws d wedges or clamps might be used to produce the same effect. A
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The employment or use, in the manuf-.tc ture of wooden boxes, of a form, a, provided with thumb-screws 1,011 their equivalents, and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination ot' the form (t with the support I) and thumb screws d, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
S. L. HILL.
Witnesses W. HAUFF, THos. S. J. DoUGLAs.
