UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY COSTELLO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BATHlNG-TU B.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 248,144, dated October 11, 1881. Application filed duly 28, 1881. (No' model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY (JosTELLo, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bathing-Tubs, of which the followingisafull, clear, and exact specification.
The object of this invention is o enable a bather to easily rub his back.
The invention consists of a corrugated or roughened plate or band of rubber, fabric of -wool, horse-hair, or other suitable material,
permanently or adjustably fixed in or on the the sloping back-piece of the tub, where the bathers back naturally rests, so that by simple and easy movements the back and shouL ders may be thoroughly rubbed.
Figure l is a perspective view of a bathingtub with myimprovenient attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

In'the drawings, A represents a bathing-tub, provided with a sloping back-piece, B, upon the center of which is held a plate, O, of corrugated or roughened rubber or other suitable material by a band, D, set over its edges and soldered or otherwise secured to the said piece B. This plate 0 is designed to present sufficient surface to receive the back and shoulders of the bather and to afford a support thereto.
By resting the back upon this plate 0 and gently moving the body from side to side, the bather may, with little effort, rub and cleanse the back.
The plate 0 may be made of rubber or haircloth, or may be constructed of bristles after the manner of a brush, and may be permanently fixed, as shown, or may be removubly fixed in suitable guides or socket-s. In some instances I make the plate 0 of metal and secure it in place in the tubA With proper insulating substance, and then pass an electric current through said plate 0 by means of a battery and suitable connections, thereby producing an electric current that has a therapeutic effeet; on the bather.
Having thus fully described my iuvention,1 claim as newaud desire'to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bathing-tub made, as herein shown and described, with a friction-plate for the back, as set forth.
2.The combination, with the back piece, B, of a bathing-tub, A, of afriction-plate, 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY COSTELLO.
