UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH BUNCH, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,017, dated. October 11, 1881,
Application filed August 17,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH BUNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rich mond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GoilBed-Springs and Connections; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates tocertain new and useful improvements in coil-springs and their connections, especiallydesigned for use in connection with the ordinary slats of bcdsteads to form a spring bed-bottom; and theinvention consists in novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described,and specifically designated in the claim. I Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view or plan of a spring bed-bottom formed by my improved double-coiled springs and their connections;
. Figs. 2, 3, and 4, detached views of the spring and connections. 7
In the drawings, A represents my improved double-coiled springs connected at their lower ends, B, to the slats B, in any of the usual methods employed for that purpose. These double-coiled springs are formed from a single piece of the best steel wire, and the upper part of said wire, forming the connection to produce the double spring, is twisted to form the loops Q 0, all as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, andgthe springs proper, connected at their upper ends by the hooked spring-connections D and E,1h aving a loop, d, or a bend, 6, near the center thereof, for giving the connections the requisite elasticity. Each one of the double springs is connected to the springs imme' diately in front and rear and on each side thereof by the connections D and E, and also the loops 0 0, all as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The double springs, with the loops 0 O, are very elastic, and when connected together by the connections D and E form a most durable,
strong, and easily constructed spring bed-bottom, and which can be readily formed and applied to the slats of the ordinary bedsteads.
In order to overcome theinward strain produced by the springs beingconnected together as shown, the outer row of springs, both longitudinally and transversely, should be connected to the side and end rails. by the same elastic connections Dand E. The connections D and E are provided with hooked ends d and 6', by which (after the springs are properly arranged and secured on the slats) they can be easily and quickly connected to the springs and side and end rails, as shown, the rails having secured thereto eyebolts for the reception of the hooked ends of the connections.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Theherein-describedspringbed-bottom,eomposed of the double springsA,having intermediate ]oops,O G, and the elastic connections D and E,connectingthe several springs together and to the side and end rails of the bed, and also the loops 0 O of the several springs together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ELIJ AH BUNCH. Witnesses:
