In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the improved hand drill. It includes a casing structure B supporting a boring tool arrangement C. A gas engine construction D is associated in a compact relation with the casing B having a drive connection E with the boxing tool C. A timer F is provided for regulating the supply of current to a spark plug G of the engine, and a carburetor H to be associated in an out of the way and compact relation with respect to the casing structure.
The casing structure is of a nature to provide a hand grip of a somewhat conventional type found upon portable hand drills. This casing structure includes a main body portion Il) having integrally formed therewith a handle II; the space between the body IIJ and handle II, designated at I2. being adapted to receive the fingers of the user. Of course the hand portion II is of tubular formation. The casing structure in the lower half of the body portion I is provided with a compartment I4 which :continues over the base I of the casing structure and at I6 continues upwardly for approximately half the vertical height of the hand grasping portion Il, which is of tubular formation. This compartment arrangement is adapted to receive gasoline or a liquid fuel supply, and the compartment is closed at the sections I4 and I6 by means of pump walls 2 I4 and I6, which extends upwardly through the upper half of the hand grasping portion II and is laterally extended to the right at the top of the tubular hand grasping portion; terminating in a removable cap exteriorly ofthe casing. This, of course, is a filling cap and the tube Il is used to pour the fuel into the above mentioned compartment'arrangement. The remainder of the casing structure includes an upper portion 2| which is integral with the above mentioned compartment providing lower construction of the casing, and associated in a complementary relation with the portion 2| is a removable cover section 22 which encloses the entire upper half of the casing structure and forms a part of the latter for enclosing compartments which contain such items as a drilling tool arrangement, batteries, coils and feed line I1, as will be apparent from the drawings.
The cover section 22 is secured by means of removable screws 23 to the other part of the upper casing structure, as will be noted from the drawings. The drilling tool arrangement C consists of a shaft 3D rotatably journaled at 3| in a bearing supported between the complementary parts of the upper housing structure 2I and the closure 22. In normal position the shaft is horizontal and supports a chuck 32 at its outer end for receiving a drilling bit- 33. At its inner end the shaft 30 bears upon a flange or web 34 which is integral with the housing structure`2l, and between this and the bearing 3| the shaft 30 is provided with a gear 35. A countershaft 36 is journaled at 3l upon the housing structure in horizontal parallel position below the shaft 30'. The closure section 2| may be provided with casing structure which journals this shaft. A gear 40 meshing with the gear 35 is keyed upon the shaft 36, and this shaft extends forwardly externally of the casing structure and there is provided with a ilywheel 42 which may also be in the nature of a fan and pulley wheel for a power takeoff.
Within the casing structure the shaft 36 at its inner end is provided with a crank 45 for connection with the piston rod of the gas engine to be subsequently described.
The gas engine structure D preferably comprises a stationary cylinder which may be secured in any approved manner to the casing B, preferably forwardly thereof and below the closure 22. The cylinder structure may be provided with a bolt or screw arrangement 52El for supporting the same in position, and at the bot- The latter supports a conduit I'I 3 lation shown in Figure 1. The piston 65 slidably operates in the cylinder 60 and it has a piston rod 52 eccentrically mounted with the crank wheel 45, which, of course, forms part of the shaft 36.
In the compartment at the upper part of the casing structure defined by the integral portions 2| and the closure 22, there is placed an induction coil 60 upon a support 6I and thereabove upon a support 62 there are placed batteries 64. Each of them has one contact 65 insulated on the casing structure connected at 66 with the induction coil, and at its opposite end a contact grounded upon the casing at 10.
As shown in Figure 4 the carburetor H is mounted as a part of the casing structure upon the left side of the casing, looking forwardly. The carburetor has suitable adjusting connections 15 and a pipe connection 16 which leads into the lower part of the gasoline compartment, as shown in Figure 1. An exhaust outlet or manifold 18 is provided at the opposite side of the cylinder 50.
The timing structure is provided as a part of the ignition setup consisting of a bracket which is clamped at 8| upon the bearing or housing portion in which the shaft 36 is journaled. This bracket 80 supports an insulated contact 8| connected by a line 82a in the ignition system. A resilient member 82 of spring metal has a second contact 83 thereon, grounded in the circuit. The shaft 36 is provided with a cam 81 keyed therewith which upon rotation will cause the contacts 8i and 83 to engage for closing the circuit and sparking the plug once for each revolution of the shaft 36.
` The wiring system will -be apparent from Figure 6, since the same reference characters appear therein and refer to the parts given like reference characters in the above description.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a very compact type of self-contained drilling tool has been provided. The operation, of course, will be apparent. A switch designated at 90 in Figure 6 may be placed upon the tool at any desired location. Merely by closing it and flipping the wheel 42 will cause the motor to operate. The crank shaft 36, of course, is geared with the driven shaft 30 and so long as the batteries are good and fuel remains. in the casing the tool will operate. The ,casing structure is preferably of some aluminum alloy, and of course all parts,
except the engine cylinder, may be made of light weight materials.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a hand drill of a self-contained unitary type the combination of a casing structure having a hand grip portion, said casing structure lncluding in the lower part thereof a fuel reservoir extending upwardly into the hand grip portion, filling means carried by the hand grip for filling the reservoir, a driven shaft, an internal combustion engine cylinder carried by the casing structure, and an ignition system for the internal combustion engine structure including a battery, induction coil, spark plug for the engine and timer all operatively connected and carried by the casing structure.
2. In a portable hand drill the combination of a casing structure having a hand grip formed as a part thereof, said casing structure in the lower part thereof having a4 reservoir which extends into A.the hand grip for receiving a liquid fuel, said grip, a piston for the cylinder, a crank shaft rotatably supported by the upper casing structure operatively connected to thepiston, means gearing the crank shaft with the driven shaft, a spark plug carried by said cylinder, a timer operatively connected with the crank shaft, a removable induction coil and battery supported in the upper casing compartment, and a carburetor for feeding fuel from said reservoir to the internal combustion engine.
3. In a portable hand tool the combination of a casing structure having a base portion provided with a fuel reservoir, and an upper compartment providing portion, a handle connected with the casing at one side thereof, a driven shaft supported by the upper part of the casing structure on a normal horizontal axis, an internal combustion engine providing means supported by said casing structure for driving said driven shaft including a crank shaft operating on an axis parallel to the driven shaft, operating means connecting the crank shaft with the driven shaft, a cylinder carried by the upper part of the casing structure at the opposite side of the casing structure from the handle, and a piston for said cylinder connected with the crank shaft.
4. In a portable hand tool the combination of a casing structure having a base portion provided with a fuel reservoir, and an upper compartment providing portion, a normal vertically disposed handle connected with the casing 'at one side thereof, a driven shaft supported by the upper part of the casing structure on a normal horizontal axis, an internal combustion engine providing means supported by said casing structure for driving said driven shaft including a. crank shaft operating on an axis parallel to the driven shaft, means connecting the crank shaft with the driven shaft, a cylinder carried by the upper part of the casing structure at the opposite side of the casing structure from the handle, and a piston for said cylinder connected with the crank shaft, said crank shaft lhaving an external power takeo means facing in the same general direction and adjacent to said driven shaft.
5. In a portable tool the combination of a casing structure including a lower base portion providing a fuel reservoir, a. handle carried at a side of the base portion, said casing structure including an upper compartment providing portion extending normal to the line of the handle, a horizontal driven shaft supported by said upper casing portion, piston and cylinder means connected with the casing portion, a crank shaft geared to the driven shaft having operative connection with the lpiston means, means in the upper compartment providing casing portion providing an ignition system including an induction coil and battery, and means for attaching a work bit to said driven shaft.
6. In a hand operated portable tool the combination of a casing structure comprising a, lower base portion having a fuel reservoir therein, and an upper compartment providing portion having a removable closure for access to the compartment thereof, said casing structure including a.
