Application November 28, 1941, Serial No. 420,896 (c1. 'f7-7) 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in portable drills of the power-operated type.
The invention is designed with the primary objects in view of providing a light weight, easily handled device of this character in which the drill, or other tool, is driven by an internal combustion motor and ladjustable without disengaging the drive or altering the position of the motor to drill upwardly, downwardly, or laterally, of the motor at various angles.
Another object is to provide a device of the character and for the purpose above set forth which is economical to manufacture, service and operate, involves few parts readily accessible for replacement, and which is adapted for utilizing different types of tool holders and tools.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In the said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved portable drill in its preferredy embodiment,
Figure 2 is a view in elevation taken at a right angle to Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, the basic element of my improved portable drill is an internal combustion, gasoline motor I of light weight construction and small design preferably of a weight approximating 25 pounds and including a at, rectangular, base plate 2 forming an edge flange 3 extending equidistantly around a crank case 4 surmounting the base plate 2, a single air cooled cylinder 5 arising from the crank case 4, a small fuel supply tank 6 suitably fixed to one side of the cylinder 5, the usual spark plug 'I designed to be connected in any desired manner to a battery, or the like, not shown, and a crank Shaft 8 extending through the crank case 4 parallel with the base plate 2.
One end of the crank shaft 8 extends out of one side of the crank case 4 and is equipped with a pulley 9 so that the motor I may be used for driving various household, or farm, appliances if desired. The other end of the crank shaft 8 extends out of the other side of and has fast thereon a worm IIJ.
the crank case 4 5 At said other side of the crank case 4 is an elbow-type drive housing Il having an inner end rotatably mounted on said side of the crank case 4 so that the housing 9 is rotatable into different set positions concentrically about the axis of said crank shaft 8. The other end of the housing I I is closed by a detachable cap member I2 and, as will be understood, is arranged to extend radially of the crank shaft 8.
Various means may be utilized for mounting the inner end of the housing I I on the crank case 4, said end oi the housing being preferably provided with external screw threads, as at i3, turned into a keeper ring I4 secured to the crank case 4 by means of bolts I5.
The housing II is provided in the outer end thereof, in laterally offset position relative to the crank shaft 8, with a bearing sleeve I6 extending laterally from said end into and out of the latter. The bearing sleeve I6 has suitably secured therein a bushing I 1.
The bushing I1 provides a journal bearing for the shank I8 of a tool holder, said shank extending into the outer end of the housing II and being equipped on its inner end with a worm wheel I9 suitably xed thereon and secured thereto in mesh with the worm I 0 by a set collar 20, the worm wheel I 9 having a bearing on the inner end of the sleeve I6 and bushing I1. In the present instance the tool holder has been shown as of the type having an enlarged internally tapered chuck 2I extending out of the bushing I1 and designed for use with the usual auger-type bit, not shown. However, other forms of tool holders, for instance, those designed for use with steel drills and reamers, not shown, may be substituted for the one shown, as will be clear. A suitable end thrust bearing 22 may be provided between the chuck 2| and sleeve I6, if desired.
Extending along the inner end of the housing II, parallel with the axis of the crank shaft 8, is an external lug 23 having threaded thereto the stem 24 of a hand screw 25, which stem is designed to be turned against the keeper ring I4 to maintain the housing II in different set positions.
A suitable bail-like handle 26 is provided on the inner end of the housing Ii to extend transversely of said end, said handle forming a hand grip by means of which the be rotated into diierent set positions.
For porting and manipulating the described drill, a hand grip structure is provided comprising corner posts 21 arising from the base plate 2 5 and secured thereto by nuts 28, and a rectanguhousing I I may lar, substantially continuous hand rail 29 supported by said posts 21 and extending around the cylinder 5 just above the crank case 4. Preferably the hand rail 29, posts 21 and handle 26 are formed of metal tubing for light weight, strong construction.
The use and operation of the described drill will be readily understood. The motor I may be carried andheldv` with any sideforemost by grasping the Vhand rail 29'upon oppositesides` thereof. The tool holder may be revolved to point the same upwardly, downwardly, any angle to the vertical, or horizontal, desired, and by rotating the housing ll through themedium of the handle 26, all without disturbing the drive, the advantage of which willvbe-obvious. By detaching the set collar 29 from the wheel I9, and pulling the shank` I8-of thertoolholderV out of the bushing I1, a diierent tool holder having a similar shank may be mounted in the drill by inserting the shankthereofin said bushing l1 and replacing the worm wheell and set collar-29.
The foregoing will, 1t is believed, sufflceto impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is suS ceptible of modicationwithout departing from the inventive concept, and right is hereinreserved to such modicatio'nsas iallwithin the scope of the subjoined claims.-
What I claim is l. In a portable drill, aebase plate, a motor centered on saidplate, a continuous hand-rail surrounding the motor above said plate in spaced relation to the motor-and iixed to said plate, a drive shaft forsaidmotor having; one endY1 exhorizontally or at- 20 drive shaft for said tending beyond one side of said plate, a tool holder including a shank, means to mount said shank on one side of the motor for revolving around said end of said shaft in laterally oiset right angular relation thereto, and a drive between said end of the shaft and said shank comprising a Worm on said end of said shaft and a worm wheel fast on said shank and revoluble about said worm in mesh therewith, said means comprising. an elbow-type drive housing inclosing said end of the shaft and said worm and wheel and comprising a bearing sleeve for said shank and an end rotatably mounted on said motor for adjustment of the housing about said end of said shaft into different set positions.
2.- Ina portable drill, a base plate, a motor centered on said plate, a continuous hand rail surrounding the motor above said plate in spaced relation` to the motor and fixed to said plate, a
motor having one end extending beyond one side ofV said plate, a tool holder including a shank; means Vto mount said shank `on one side-vof thel motor for revolving around said end of said shaftin laterally offset right zii-angular relation thereto, a drive between said end of lthe shaft and said shank comprising a worm on said end of said shaft anda worm wheel fast ori-said shankand revoluble about said worm in-fmesh therewith, said means comprising an el- 3 bow-type drive housing inclosing said end of the shaft and said worm and wheel and comprising a bearing sleeve for said shank and an end 'rotatably mountedon said motor for adjustment of the housing about said end o said shaft into :i'diierent Iset positions, and a'bail-like-4 handle on said housing for rotating the same.
