As shown the cutter comprises a fixed blade 4 mounted on a base 5 and a movable blade 6 adapted to co-operate with the fixed blade. The movable blade 6 is fixed by means of screws to a bar 6a of rectangular cross-section which forms the holder and is mounted in a carrier comprising a rigid top bar 1' having bearing pockets 8 one at each end thereof into which the ends of the holder 6a are inserted. The holder 6a is freely movable forwardly or laterally of the top bar I in the pockets and two adjustable springpressed plungers 9 which bear on its side are mounted on the side of the top bar 1.
Longitudinal movement of the blade 6 and holdor Go is prevented by abutment of the ends of the end ,ef {the carrier is +depressed the ?blader6 will receive ea -dawnward.-movement rand salsoz'a longitudinal motion depending on the angle :of the "slot H). The carrier may be depressed by 40 hand and a return spring (not shown) may be fitted or the carrier may be raised and lowered by mechanical operating means which may be part of a machine with which the cutter is incorporated.
The above described cutter is set up with the end of the movable blade 6 adjacent to the pivot pin I5 always in overlapping contact with the fixed blade 4 under a uniform pressure so that an even scissors-like cut is obtained.
While the arrangement hereinbefore described shows the movable blade of the cutter adapted to be operated to produce'a combined slicing and scissors cut it will be understood that the floating blade arrangement is not restricted to any particular form of operation. For example,
the cutter may be set up to produce a true scissors cut the carrier pivoting at one end about a pin on the base, the other end thereof being swung about the pivot to produce the cut by hand or power means.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
The invention having thus scribed, the following is claimed: 1
1. In a cutter, in combination, a fixed blade and a movable blade, a carrier for said movable blade, said carrier including a rigid top bar havdevices mounted on said top bar and spaced longitudinally thereof and cooperating with said movable blade to yieldingly urge it into contact with said fixed blade throughout the cutting stroke, an adjusting device on each of said spring devices for varying the spring pressure on said movable blade, an adjustable limiting device on one of said bearing pockets for limiting said adjusting movement of said movable blade, a pinand-slot mounting support connected to one end portion, of said carrier and supporting said movable blade for bodily and pivotal movements, and

In a cutter, in combination, a fixed blade and a movable blade, a carrier for said movable blade, said carrier including a rigid top bar having bearing pockets rigidly supported thereon and spaced longitudinally thereof, a rigid holder to which said movable blade is firmly attached and the opposite end portions thereof extending into said bearing pockets for'fioatingly mounting themovable blade for adjustment independently of said carrier with reference to said fixed blade, spring devices mounted on said top bar and spaced longitudinally thereof and having plungers respectively cooperating with said holder to yielda downwardly inclined guide at the opposite end portion of said carrier so as to impart a combined slicing and scissors cutting action to the movable blade.

In a cutter, in combination, a fixed blade and a movable blade, a carrier for said movable blade, said carrier including a rigid top bar having bearing pockets rigidly supported thereon and spaced longitudinally thereof, a rigid holder to for varying the spring pressure on said movable blade, a pin-and-slot mounting support connected to one end portion of said carrier and supporting said movable blade for bodily and pivotal movements, and a downwardly inclined guide at the 'opposite end portion of said carrier so as to impart a combined slicing and scissors cutting action to the movable blade.
