2 Claims.

It is an important object of the invention to provide a mail box of the character described which is mounted on its support for vertical and horizontal movement to facilitate its use.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a mail box of the character described having a support member adjustable to a plurality of vertical heights relative to the ground.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following specification, and accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, in which like numerals are used to designate like parts.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mail box and 7 its support, part of the support being shown in section.

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the mail box, and

Figure 3 is a cross-section of the box, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a hollow rectangular-sectioned box bent outwardly approximately 45 degrees intermediate its ends to define a perpendicular bottom section 6 having a closed end 6' and a open-end upper section 1 having a hinged lid 8 provided with a spring snap 9 adapted to engage a member l on the front face of the said section 1. The front side of the said box is provided with a name plate holder l4, and a, vertically disposed recessed member or guide means I is secured to the back of said section '6 closely adjacent and underlying the bend in the said box 5 for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent.

A hollow member It provided with a finger grip I6 is pivotally mounted at I! on the front side of section 1, adapted to receive and retain within the closed member until removed mail to be collected. An indicating flag I8 is pivotally mounted on the side of section 1 at I9, and a retainer clip to secure the flag l8 when not in use is secured on the side of the said section.

A lever 2| is pivotally mounted at 2| on the side of section 1 closely adjacent the hollow member Hi, the said lever being provided with three radially extending arms approximately 120 degrees apart, 22, 24 and 21. The arm 22 extends normally downward and is arranged with a balancing weight 23 at its free end. The arm 24 is I provided with an extending flange 25 at its free end to support the flag l8 when raised from its engagement in the retainer 20, while the arm 21 is adapted to impinge against an extending pin 28 carried on the side of the member Hi to retain the-said member in closed and tight engagement with the front face of member I.

A frame 29, adapted to carry an illuminated name plate is suspended from the bottom 6' by the rings 3|].

The numeral 3| designates generally the support or supporting structure for my mail box. It comprises a vertical standard or tubular member 32 having a plurality of spaced-apart diametrically aligned holes 33 therethrough at one end thereof, the said member 32 being adapted to receive telescopically a cylinder member 34 having a plurality of diametrically aligned holes 35 therethrough, spaced apart to register with the holes 33 to permit passage of a bolt through the respective registering

holes

33 and 35 to secure the member 32 on the member 34, a wing nut 31 being provided for retaining the bolt 36 in the registering holes. A wedge shaped anchor 38 having a dependent pointed element 39 is carried on the member 34, the anchor 38 and element 39 being adapted to be buried in the ground to support and anchor the structure 3| and the mail box 5.

A cap 40 is secured on the fore end of the member 32 by welding or otherwise and a horizontal arm or smaller diametered cylindrical rod 4| extends outwardly therefrom axially normal to the member 32, the said rod 4| being bent downward at a right angle a short distance outwardly of the cap 40 to provide a dependent portion 42, the end of which is pivotally mounted for rocking movement about a horizontal axis as by means embodying a pair of lugs 43 attached to a plate or connecting piece 44 arranged for up and down translative movement in the recessed member l5, tension between the said box 5 and the structure 3| being maintained for holding the box in fixed position on its pivot during such translative movement by a cable 45 which has one end secured between the lugs 43 and its other end secured to a ring 49 mounted on the rear of the section 1, the intermediate portion of the said cable passing successively through a ring 46 secured on the member 32 and a ring 48 depending from a collar 41 slidably mounted on the rod 4|.

As may be readily seen, my box may be translated vertically in the recessed member 5 and pivoted both inwardly and outwardly relative to the structure 3| on the pivot member 50 for the convenience of the user. The supporting structure may also be adjusted vertically on the mem ber 34 to suit the convenience of the owner.

I have described my invention in the form best known to me at this time. It is to be understood however, that changes in the arrangement and form of the parts, or substitution of materials, may be made within the scope of the sub-joined claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. The combination of a mail box, a verticallypositioned support, a horizontal arm having a depending end carried bir said support, means piv otally ifioin'itin'g saldmail box' on' the depending end of said arm for rocking movement about, a. horizontal axis, means carried by said mail box and operatively connected to saidrpivotai mount?- ing means providing relative vertical movement? of said box, and cable tension means connected between said box and said support 'and ai'ifi'for" maintaining said box in a fixedvposition-on its" pivot.
