Description

UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVILIIIAM A. SPENCER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NECKSCARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $17,584., dated. September 27, 1881.
Application filed July 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SPENCER, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bosom-Scarfs; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front View, Fig. 2 a top view, Fig. 3 an edge view, and Fig. 4 a rear View, of a bosom scarf embodying my invention.
The scarf is intended to be worn with either the front or the rear side of it against the shirtbosom of a person. The front side of it, as well as one side of the neck-strap, may be of material of a color or design like or differing from thatofthe rear side of the scarf and the other side of the neck-strap.
The nature of my invention is duly set forth in the claims hereinafter presented.
In the scarf there is a single gorget, A, and a set of two aprons on each side of it, those of one set being shown at B B in Fig. 1, and those of the other set at C C in Fig. 4. The two aprons of each of the sets cross each other in manner as represented, those of one set being connected with or sewed to those of the other set at their outer edges, with the exception that two of theapronsviz., those marked B C-are.extended between and beyond the other twoviz., B and C-to which they are or may be fastened. The aprons of each extend obliquely across the gorget, which is'directly between the two sets.
The neck-strap D at one end is extended be-' tween and fastened to the aprons B C, and carried through an opening, b, and between the aprons B and C, (disconnected at their upper jedges to admit of such,) and thence out from between them at their outer edges, which are there disconnected a sufficient distance, as
(ModeL) Having hitched the strap upon the spur, the free portions of the strap may be folded back in rear of the scarf and turned between the rear aprons.
The single strap-hitching spur answers for securing the strap when either set of the aprons is worn next the bosomof the shirt.
My duplex bosom-scarf, as described, answers all the purposes of two separate scarfs, and saves one gorget and one neck-strap, which would be required in their construction.
In order to prevent the gorget from being soiled or worn by the front button or stud of a shirt collar or band, Icombine with the gorget and the two sets of curved aprons a shield or flap, E, so hinged or connected with the gorget at its upper edge as to be capable of being turned down against either side of the gorget, such shield, while the scarf is in use, extending between the gorget and the said button or stud.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, viz:
l. The combination of the gorget with the two sets of curved aprons fastened to and arranged, as described, on opposite edges of it, and connected at their outer edges,- and having two of the connected aprons extended between the other two, all being substantially as set forth.
2. The duplex bosom-scarf, substantially as I described, consisting of the single neck-strap, the gorget, and the four aprons, arranged and combined as set forth, and provided with the strap-receiving openings b c and hitching-spur a, arranged as explained. I
WILLIAM A. SPENCER.
