atented UNITED STATES LEWIS S. HAYES, OF CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,562, dated September 27, 1881.
' Application filed June 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS S. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cortland, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin FoldingItocking-Ohairs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
, My invention relates to folding rockingchairs, and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more particularly hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a chair which will embody the advantages of cheapness of manufacture, simplicity in construction, durability, efficiency, and reliability in service, and one that is easily and readily folded or unfolded; and to these ends the invention consists, essentially, in a locking and straining frame which supports the seat, and is hinged only upon a movable pivot, a back leg-frame, an auxiliary leg-frame, and a front leg-frame, pivoted only to the rockers and braces and the rocker-frame. These features arefullyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, looking downward upon the chair; and Fig. 2, a central vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the back and front leg-frame, formed of the side rails, A, the back rounds to a, the seat round a bearing-round a, and rocker-pivot a", the latter of which connects the rockers B with the said frame A.
Loosely hung upon a rocker-round, I), are two back legs, 0, which, near their upper extremities, are perforated to receive a pivotal round, D. Upon this round D, inside of the back legs, 0, are hung auxiliary legs 0, which are pivoted above on the bearing-round a.
Upon the round D are hung the bars E which form the straining-frame, and which pass inside the side bars, A, rest against the round a, when the chair is in operative position, and furnish means of attachment at e for the flexible seat H, which, in turn, is secured to the round (P, as shown.
By this construction it will be observed that the straining-frame E is not pivoted to the frame A, and avoids all binding, effect upon the rod 0/, against which it simply abuts laterally when the chair is in operation; that the pivotal points of the back legs, (J, upon the rod 1) are strengthened by the parts 0 and E, one upon each side of each pivotal point; that the weight upon the straining-frame forces the legs 0 and auxiliary legs 0 beyond a parallel plane, and by its bearing upon the round to looks the legs 0 C in that position; and that pressure upon the pivotal point between the said legs G G sufficient to force them beyond the parallel plane in the other direction allows the chair to collapse and fold of itself.
It will also be observed that by not pivoting the said straining-frame E, I avoid weakening the same by perforations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a folding chair, of the frame A, having round a, the locking and straining seat-frame E, its movable pivot D, the seat, the jointed legs 0 C, and means, substantially as described, for controlling the distance to which the legs may spread apart, as set forth.
2. The auxiliary legs 0 and straining-frame E, hung upon the bar D upon both sides of the legs 0, combined with such legs and bar, and the seat and rockers, as set forth.
3. The combination of the frame A, rockers B I), back legs, 0, auxiliary legs 0, and seat H with the straining and locking frame E and the rounds I) and a, as and for the purposes shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS SELLEOK HAYES.
