Description

R. BEAUDOIN June 28, 1949;
HAT CARRIER Filed Dec. 14, 1946 Attorneys Patented June 28, 1949 HAT CARRIER Rose Beaudoin, Westmount, Quebec, Canada Application Claims.
The present invention relates to carriers and, more particularly, carriers for hats and the like in a container.
The main object of the invention resides in the provision of means of the character described which is more eflicient for the purpose in view.
Another object is the provision of a carrier for hats and the like which is adapted to be produced at a very low cost.
A further object concerns a hat carrier which is highly versatile and useful.
Still another object contemplates a hat carrier which is light, strong, durable and adapted to hold hats safely against deformation.
A still further object envisages a carrier which is easily portable and adapted to hold various articles of apparel besides hats.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent or be pointed out further during the description to follow.
As an example and for purposes of illustration only an embodiment of the invention is shown in the annexed drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the carrier according to the invention with a portion thereof cut away to show the inside arrangement;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the carrier showing the hat supports in position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the upper support reversed and the lower supports in collapse position; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the carrier with the upper support cut away to show the relative position of the lower ones.
Referring to the drawings wherein similar reference characters represent corresponding parts throughout the reference numeral 5 designates the base of the device, which base is a circular disc having a central tubular upright 6 suitably secured above said base and in which upright a post I is inserted. Surmounting the post 1 a shallow cup 8 is adapted to receive the hat support generally indicated by the reference letter S, this support consisting of a central open ended cylinder 10 to one end of which a cone [2 is secured, said cone being closed by means of a flat annular ring l3 forming the base of the cone.
Diametrally opposed with respect to the upright 6, and spaced therefrom, there are formed in the base 5 collars I5 bored to receive small posts l6 in upstanding position, said small posts, in turn, being adapted to hold the hat hangers [1. An examination of the drawings will show that the said hangers are shaped like an inverted cup December 14, 1946, Serial No. 716,335
Canada November 18, 1946 to the edge of which a flange l8 projects horizontally; to the inside centre of the cup each holder carries a small collar I9 for engagement with the upper end a small post 16.
The base 5 is adapted to be secured to the bottom of a cylindrical container indicated by the letter C, said container having a hinge lid an adapted to be fastened to the body of the container by a snap-button or the like fastener 2!, the lid Zll being further provided with a flexible loop 22 or the like acting as a handle for carrying the said container.
In use, the carrier is adapted to receive hats, especially ladies hats for safely storing same against damage, dust and other deterioration. For travelling the carrier of the invention is a most useful article of luggage while, under special conditions, it is conceivable that the carrier may even be furnished by high-class milliners for selling and distributing their products.
As shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 3, the main support S is so designed that it may be eiiiciently used for supporting under the best possible conditions hats having raised or lowered brims. For instance, in the case of Fig. 2, the hat H shown in dotted lines embodies a brim inclined downwardly generally: so as to support said hat in the most efiicient manner, the support S is so disposed in the cup 8 that the conical portion of said support has its apex directed upwardly, whereby the hat will have its brim bearing equally on the cone at all points.
When a hat such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 is considered, however, it is advantageous to reverse the support S so that the cone has its apex directed downwardly and the flat ring [3 disposed uppermost; in that position the hat of Fig. 3 may be more efficiently supported than otherwise.
The small holders H are similarly useful for supporting smaller hats of the cloche type which must be suspended from the crown, or for suspending veils or the like articles of wearing apparel. As an added feature, of convenience, the cylinder Hi being hollow, can be used to store such articles as gloves, handkerchiefs and the like small articles. When small hats are not desired to be carried in the container C, the holders I! as Well as the small posts Is can be dismantled or collapsed to lie at the bottom of the container and the surface available over said bottom can be used to store folded lingerie, scarves and the like.
According to the invention it is feasible to construct the entire carrier of the invention of cardboard, plastics and even light metals in the case of more durable luggage; in the case of metal construction, the posts 1 and I6 may be held in place by set-screws and even be arranged in an adjustable manner. Otherwise the cardboard or pasteboard cylinders constituting said posts can be lued in place and the support and holder similarly constructed for lightness and cheapness of manufacture. 7
From the foregoing it is evident that the present invention is an advance of the art in that it provides for a hat carrier which is very efficient for the purpose in view, is adapted to hold hats" in a variety of positions and furthermore is usable for carrying other articles as Well for storing, traveling or distributing purposes.
It must be understood that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1'. As an article of manufacture, a hat support comprising a cylindrical open-ended body, a truncated conical surface extending radially from the perimeter of the cylinder near one end there'- of, a flat annulus extending also radially from near the other end of the body and meeting the periphery of the conical surface, and a cup adapted to receive either end of the body.
2. As an article of manufacture, a hat carrier comprising a closable case, at least one post releasably insertable into the bottom of said case so as to project in upright position in the latter, a cup formed on the top of said post, and a hat support carried by said cup composed of a cylindr'ical body, a conical surface flared outwardly from one end of said body, and a flat annulus extending radially outward from near the other end of said body to meet the periphery of said conical surface; whereby either end of said body is releasably insertable into said cup whilst the other end is usable to support a hat.
3. In combination with a case for carrying hats, a reversible hat support, comprising: at
least a single post adapted to stand in upright position in said case, and a hat support carried on said post including a longitudinally symmetrical body, a conical surface extending outward from one end of said body towards the other end, a flat annulus extending transversely out from near the said other end of the body to meet the periphery of said conical surface, and either end of said body releasably' e'ngage'abl'e with the top of said post.
4. As an article of manufacture, a reversible hat support comprising a longitudinally symmetrica'l body, a conical surface extending outward from near one end of the body towards the other end, a flat annulus extending out from the body near the said other end and meeting said conical surface at the periphery thereof, and a cup adapted to receive either end of said body.
5. The combination with a case for carrying hats of at least a single post adapted to stand upright on said case, and a reversible hat support carried on said post; said hat support comprising a longitudinally symmetrical body both ends of which are rel'easably engageable with said post, and a truncated cone mounted on and flared out wafdl'y from said body; whereby when one end of the body is in engagement with said post, the other end, together with at least a portion of the cone, is adapted to carry a hat.
