BALL POINT FOUNTAIN PEN Filed Jan. 9, 1947 I N V EN TOR. 34mm A BAA/p A TTORNEY.
Patented June 28, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT lQiF-FlCE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to ball point fountain pens.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fountain pen of the ball point type which is relieved at its ball point end so that the pen can be given a lower angle of inclination when being used than is possible with the present day ball point pen where the socket which surrounds the ball extends on all sides below the large diameter of the ball.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a ball point pen which will be more comfortable and easy to use than with the present day pens which have to be maintained when being used at a high angle.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the forward end of the ball point pen embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view looking upon the writing face of the ball.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the pen in use.
Figs. 4 and 5 are also similar side and front elevational views of a still further form of the invention in which the retaining portions of the pen are relieved on two sides of the same.
The usual pen head covers more than fifty per cent of the ball surface in order that the ball will be retained in the head thereby placing the formation about the ball below the large diameter thereof. When the pen is being used upon a writing surface or paper, an engagement will be effected by the pen head when a low angle of inclination is attempted thereby making it difiicult to effect a mark with the ball unless the pen is raised to a higher angle of inclination.
Referring now to the figures, It represents an ink containing element or handle having a central opening I 5 extending through a threaded end projection l2 having a curved end face or ball seat l3 against which a ball I4 is retained by depending or forwardly extending lips l5 of a cap or removable head I6 adapted to be threaded to the threaded projection I2 of the ink containing handle ID. The axis of the ball lies in the axis of the handle. The lips extend along the opposite sides of the ball to a point below an equatorial plane which may be said to lie at right angles to the axis of the pen handle.
These lips are cupped and provide an arched enclosing wall of substantial length but less than the length of a semi-circle whereby to provide open ball faces on the opposite sides of the pen so that the pen is relieved on two sides whereby to permit the user of the pen to lower the pen from either of two directions. At the same time, the ball will be positively retained within the pen head. The ball l4 engages the curved end face or seat l3 with sufficient pressure to prevent the leakage of ink from the opening ll.
Once the pen has been picked up, it can be easily adapted to the hand of the writer to position the relieved areas of the ball so as to permit a low angle of inclination when using the pen.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a ball point pen in which a relief has been provided on the pen head which retains the ball such that the pen can be lowered to a low angle Without the side of the pen head engaging with the paper sheet and thus providing a more comfortable writing pen.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a ball point pen, a handle structure having an ink discharging opening therein and a ball seat, a scribing ball engaging with the ball seat to receive ink from the opening thereof, and said structure having depending lips extending downwardly over the opposite sides of the ball below an equatorial plane of the ball extending transversely through the longitudinal axis of the structure and each of said lip portions having an arched enclosing wall of substantial length but less than the length of a semi-circle whereby to relieve the ball face at the opposite sides of the structure and to permit the low angle use of the pen from two directions.
2. In a ball point pen, an ink containing handle element having a threaded projection with a discharged opening therein and with a curved ball seat end face, a scribing ball engageable with the ball seat end face, a head member adapted to be 3 threaded over the projection and having depending lip portions extending below the equatorial plane of the ball extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the handle element to retain the ball upon the seat when the head is fixed to the projection of the handle element, each of said lips having an arched enclosing wall of substantial length but of less length than a semi-circle whereby to permit the pen to be used at a low angle in two directions, portions of the surface of the ball being exposed above the equatorial plane and adapted for the scribing of ink.
