WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, OF ALBION, NEW YORK.
BAKING-POWDER SAFE AND MIXER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,330, dated September 20, 1881.
' Applicationfiled April 16,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, of Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New Yorlghave invented anew and valuable Improvement in Baking-Powder Safes and Mixers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a section transverse the mixer. Fig. 2 is a section lengthwise the mixer.
This invention relates to improvements for mixing and holding baking-powders.
The invention consists in a case and safe for holding and containing a mixer for the same, as set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A is a case and safe of suitable shape, that shown being a good one. This is made in two chambers, B and O. The bottom D of chamber B slants downward, and at its lowest part is the transverserectangularopeningE,leadinginto chamber 0 below. On each side of this opening the bottom is formed in a ledge, as at d c.
F is a trap turning on shaft G, which closes this opening, one edge, f, coming above the ledge d, the other below the ledge 0.
At the back of chamber O is the down wardlyslanting guide-board H, so arranged that its lower edge, h, is beyond that of'trap F when the latter is turned down.
The front of the case and safe is covered with glass I, to show the interior. At the rear, at the bottom, is a door, K, and L is the cover.
M is the mixer, placed in the upper chamber. Two bearings, m m, are secured to the inside of the sides of the upper chamber, one, the bearing m, having through its bottom the perforation m In the side of the case, at the other bearing m is made a hole, 12.
N is a cylinder, of glass or other material, through which passes an adjustable shaft, P,
bearing the wings Q within the cylinder. On
the outside, at the ends, the cylinder has the disks Z, passing through one of which and into the cylinder is a tube, R, which is the journal for the cylinder at that end,and at the other end another tube, S, is secured inside the cylinder, in alignment with tube R. Shaft P has collars p p, which come against tubes R and S, and a perforation, 12 in its exposed end p The cylinder, with the shaft, is put in the case, the tube S resting in bearing m, and through hole n the end p of shaft P in hearing m. A handle, 1, is inserted in tube S, and secured by screw-threads or otherwise. Access is had to the inside of the cylinder by an opening in the end or side.
The materials for the powder are placed in the cylinder, and thoroughly mixed by turning the same. The shaft can be kept from turning by slipping a pin through its end 172 into perforation m of bearing on. After the powder is mixed it is poured ontinlo the case and safe through opening E into chamber 0.
I lay no claim to a case and safe divided into two compartments, the upper containing a mixer and the lower serving'as a receiver for the baking powder, as I am not the first inventor thereof; but
What I. do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A show-case and safe for baking-powders, in combination with amixer which is distinct and separable from the case, as set forth.
2. A show-case and safefor baking-powders, in combination with a distinct and separable mixer which consists of a revoluble cylinder and a winged shaft, as set forth.
3. Ashow-case and safe for baking-powders, which is made in two compartments, in combination with a distinct and separable mixer located in the upper compartment, and which consists of a revoluble cylinder and a winged shaft, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.
