MACHINE FOR APPLYINGBANDS 1'0 CIGARS Filed Jan. 7', 1948 Patented June 14, 1949 MACHINE FOB AHB G BA D 1'0 CIGARS Hubert Emile Brouns, Eindhoven, Netherlands, assignor to N. V. Vereenigde Tabaksindustrieen Mignot & De Block, Eindhoven, Netherlands, a company of the Netherlands Application January '7, 1948, Serial No. 1,043 In the Netherlands January 31, 1947 2 Claims. 1
In machines for applying one or more bands, e. g. an ornamental band and/or a tax band, to a cigar, the tight bending around the cigar of the flat strip or strips of paper or like material forming said band or bands and positioned across the cigar and the holding of said band or bands, while the ends thereof are glued together, lead to difficulties. In a known machine this bending and holding operation is carried out by means of a stamp provided with resilient finger which, during displacement of said stamp towards the cigar, move alon both sides of the cigar and fold the ends of the bands lying across said cigar around the same.
The invention has for its object to improve this machine and to provide a device permitting to apply the band or bands in a very tight manner to the cigar, however, without running the risk thereby of bruising the same. It consists in a device which is provided with a holder, three spring loaded stretcher members movably attached to said holder, and an endless flexible folding band passing round the free ends of said stretcher members, in such a manner, that said band is kept stretched in the form of a triangle,
of which the base, during movement of the holder towards the cigar, can be tightly folded around the cigar. A band or strip positioned between said folding band and the cigar will be tightly pressed by the former around and against the cigar.
According to the invention the folding and holding device may be so constructed that the stretcher member engaging the vertical angle of the folding band is axially slidably mounted on the holder and is loaded by a spring keeping said folding band taut, and that the stretcher members engaging the base angles of the folding band are linked to the holder and pressed against adjustable abutments by springs resisting said stretcher members of being removed from one another at their active ends.
For the elucidation of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention; in this drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the folding and holding device shown in its starting position, and
Fig. 2 is a view of the lower part of the device according to Fig. l in its end position.
In the drawing I represents a holder which is supported by an arm 2 adapted to move said holder towards or from a cigar 4 lying on a table 3. Mounted in the holder I is a rod 5 so that it can slide lengthwise therein. This rod is pushed upwards by a spring 6. The holder I carries also two levers 1, 8, which are linked at 9 and It) to said holder. The upright ends of said levers slidably engage threaded bolts II, I2 projecting transversely from the holder and are pressed by springs I3, I l against nut-shaped abutments I5, I6 mounted on said bolts. Round the free lower ends of the rod 5 and the levers I, 8 a flexible foldin band I'i, e. g. a rubber band,
is passed, which is kept stretched by the members 5, I and 8 in the shape of a triangle. The base of this triangle faces the cigar when the device is in its starting position above the cigar.
This device operates as follows:
After a fiat strip of paper I8 forming the cigar band has been positioned acros the cigar by the banding machine in a known and notshown manner and one end, e. g. the right hand end, of said strip I8 has been provided with some glue I9 the holder I and accessories is moved towards the cigar 4. Thereby the base of the folding band I! is pressed onto the strip I8 and, when moved on, encircles the cigar, thus folding the strip I8 around the latter (Fig. 2). The levers I, 8 are so adjusted by the abutments I5, I6 that the distance between their lower ends is a bit smaller than the diameter of the cigar so that said levers are forced to slide along the sides of the cigar and to exert thereon a force which is defined by the springs I3, I4. Thereby the strip I8 is tightly folded around the cigar. In the lowest position of the holder (Fig. 2) the stretcher rod 5 is drawn downwards against the force of spring 6.
In that position the band I! is kept tightly around the cigar and it holds the strip I8 when the downward pointing ends of the latter are bent one over the other and glued together by horizontally movable fingers 20, 2|. After this operation has been accomplished the fingers 20, 2I and the holder I return to their starting position and the cigar 4 provided with an ornamental band and/or a tax band is removed from the machine.
What I claim is:
1. An apparatus for applying at least one band to a cigar and holding said band while, one end thereof is folded upon the other, characterized by a holder, three spring loaded stretcher members movably attached to said holder, and an endless flexible folding band passing round the free ends of said stretcher members, in such a manner, that said band is kept stretched in the form of a triangle, the base of which, during axially slidably mounted on said holder and is loaded by a spring keeping said folding band taut, and the stretcher members engaging the base angles of the folding band are linked to the holder and pressed against adjustable abutments by springs resisting the movement of said stretcher members from one another at their active ends HUBERT EMJLE BROUNS.
