1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to :improvements in automatic locks for windows.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved automatic window lock which will automatically and positively lock two window sashes when the same are brought to their normal closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic spring projected lock for windows which will operate automatically when the two sashes of a window are brought to their normal closed position, and means for releasing the locking member from the locking grooves formed in the adjacent edges of the two cooperating window sashes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a concealed automatically operated window locking mechanism which will be housed in the space between the window frame and the adjacent side wall of a room, together with a pull operator for releasing the window lock after the same has automatically locked the two window sashes.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved automatic window lock which will be highly ecient in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away and in section of a window and frame showing the improved automatic window lock incorporated therein;
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the guard for the spring lock and lever;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the springprojected bolt or lock member;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the corners of two cooperating glazed sashes showing the locking grooves and the reinforcing edging therefor;
Figure '7 is a View taken on the line 'I--T of Figure 1;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the lock releasing yoke arm;
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the lock case, and
Figure l0 is a sectional view on the line lll- I0 of Figure 9.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specication and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a window frame having a side member I and upper and lower members 2 and 3, respectively. The frame will be set in a window opening 4 in a room wall 5, and a space 6 will be left between the side member I of the window frame and the adjacent edge of the window opening for housing the concealed window lock mechanism. The upper and lower glazed sashes l and 8 are slidably received in the window frame, and have the usual sash weights 9 and Il) connected therewith by the sash cords II and I2 extending over the pulleys I3 and I4.
The lower corner of the upper sash 'I and the upper corner of the lower sash 8 are notched out to form the aligning locking grooves I5 and I6 which cooperate with the metal reinforcing edging plates I'I and I8 secured to the outer side edges of said sash, as clearly illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings. A substantially rectangular aperture is formed through the side frame member I and receives the rectangular metal lock case I9 which is formed with the outwardly extending attaching ears 20, and screws 2| are secured in apertures 22 in said ears to fasten them to the side frame member to hold said case in position. The case I9 will be disposed in horizontal alignment with the locking grooves I5 and I6 in the window sashes 'l and 8.
A guard member for the spring lock and lever is substantially U-shaped in form and is provided with the upper and lower arms 23 and 24 and vertically extending connecting arm 25 which is apertured at 26. The arm 23 is twisted as at 2l, and laterally extending ends 28 and 29 are formed on the inner ends of the arms 23 and 24, said end 28 extending laterally along the side frame member I, while the end 29 extends downwardly along said side frame member. The ends 28 and 29 are apertured as at 30 and 3| to receive the screws 32 extending therethrough and into the said side frame member I, said guard member overlying the lock case I9.
A U-shape metal locking bolt 33 is provided and is formed with a bracing plate 34 extending between its arms, said plate supporting the outwardly extending guide rod 35, which is adapted to be slidably mounted through the aperture 26 in the guard member arm 25, and supports the coil spring 36 about it, extending between the plate 34 and said arm 25 for resiliently projecting the locking bolt 33 through the case I9 and into the locking grooves I and I6 in the window sashes 1 and 8.
The lock releasing lever 31 is formed with the integrally formed depending yoke 38, the ends of which are apertured as at 39 and 40, and are adapted to be connected by means of the pins or screws 4I through the apertures 42 and 43 formed through the ends of the U-shape locking bolt 33. A pin or fastener 44 is extended through the slot 45 in the lever 31 and through the aperture 46 through the twisted arm 23 on the said guard member, whereby movement of the upper end of the lever 31 towards the side frame member I will release the bolt 33 from the locking grooves I5 and I6 in the window sashes 1 and 8, against the tension of the coil spring 36, and when released, the coil spring will automatically project the bolt 33 into locking engagement with the aligned locking grooves I5 and I6. The upper end of the lever 31 is apertured at 41 to receive a flexible cord 48 which will extend inwardly through the aperture 49 through the side frame member I, and over the pulley 50 set in the upper cross frame member 2 to extend downwardly in front of the glazed upper sash 1. A hand engaging ring or knob 5I will be secured to the terminal end of the cord 43, so that when it is desired to unlock the sashes 1 and 8 for opening the same, the ring 5I will be pulled downwardly thereby pulling down on the cord 48 to move the lock releasing lever 31 towards the side frame member I to release the locking bolt33 from the aligned locking grooves I5 and I6 in the upper and lower sashes 1 and 8, whereupon the sashes may be eitherraised or lowered. It will be understood that when bothsashes are fully closed, the locking bolt 33 will be automatically spring projected into locked position in the aligned locking grooves I5 and I6 in the Window sashes 1 and 8.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A fastener for vertically slidable sashes comprising a lock case adapted to be disposed through the side of a window frame opposite the transverse meeting rails of a pair of slidable sashes when in closed position, a guard bracket secured to the side of said window frame overlying said lock case and formed with an aperture, an elongated operating lever pivotally attached to said guard bracket and having a yoke formed on its lower extremity, a locking bolt slidably disposed in said lock case and pivotally connected between the arms of said yoke on the operating lever and having a stem slidably mounted in the aperture in said guard bracket, a resilient tensioning spring disposed about said stem for normally urging said locking bolt to its locked position, said sashes being formed with alignable coacting locking grooves for receiving the locking bolt for holdingthe sashes locked in closed position, a pulley mounted on said window frame, and a flexible lock releasing cord disposed over said pulley and secured to the upper extremity of the operating lever.
